Former UFC lightweight title challenger Michael Chandler has concerns if his fight against Justin Gaethje is held at Madison Square Garden in New York amidst the recent COVID-19 vaccine policies announced by the state government.
Chandler, who is fresh off his UFC lightweight title loss to Charles Oliveira back at UFC 262, is scheduled to battle Gaethje at UFC 268 on Nov. 6. The UFC hasn’t announced an official venue for the bout, but Chandler says he won’t be able to compete in New York due to the state’s recent mandates that require proof of vaccination for indoor entertainment and events.
During a recent Instagram live session on his page, Chandler expressed his reasoning for not getting a COVID-19 vaccine to this point and pointed to the rush of the vaccine by the FDA.
“I just saw that New York is dropping some heavy mandates on the city of New York City,” Chandler said. “If I was to fight on that Nov. 6 card – or whoever is fighting on Nov. 6 at Madison Square Garden – I don’t know how many fighters will be vaccinated. I don’t really have a tally on who is or isn’t. I will not be vaccinated at that point.”
If Chandler wants another shot at the UFC lightweight belt soon, a win over a former interim champion like Gaethje will catapult him back into the conversation.
Chandler vs. Gaethje will surely be a top contender fight, after Oliveira battle Dustin Poirier at a later date. Gaethje hasn’t competed since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254 and a fight with Chandler has been discussed over the past few months.
UFC president Dana White has already said that he won’t require fighters to get vaccinated, so that might mean that UFC 268’s lightweight feature between Gaethje and Chandler could move back to Las Vegas, or another venue such as Texas or Florida.
Regardless, fans can look forward to a massive fight for Chandler and Gaethje, regardless of where the fight ends up taking place.
What are your thoughts on Michael Chandler’s comments regarding the COVID-19 vaccine?

Michael Chandler doesn’t agree that Dustin Poirier would have gone on to win in the second round if Conor McGregor didn’t break his tibia.
McGregor suffered a first-round TKO loss due to a doctor’s stoppage as a result of the injury that occurred towards the end of the first round of their trilogy match at UFC 264 last month.
McGregor, along with many of his fans, believe the fight would have played out differently if he made it to the second round unscathed. Others, however, believe Poirier was getting the best of McGregor in the first round regardless and given how their rematch went, it was only a matter of time until Poirier would get the win.
While Poirier would likely have won given how the fight was playing out, anything can happen in mixed martial arts and Chandler knows that more than anyone.
Chandler looked to be on his way to winning the lightweight title after hurting Oliveira in the first round of their championship fight at UFC 262 in May.
However, Oliveira survived and managed to get the TKO win in the second round. For that reason, Chandler isn’t ruling out the possibility that McGregor may have turned things around in the second round without a broken tibia.
“It’s a hard one, because a lot of people say Dustin was just going to run through him. I don’t know if Dustin necessarily runs through him,” Chandler said (via Middle Easy). “Chad Mendes ran through Conor, and then Chad Mendes lost that fight. Conor is better than we think he is a lot of times, at dealing with the early onslaught, the early adversity, the early takedown, and the early wrestling and grappling. I think Poirier wins that fight, I think Poirier would have won that fight, but I don’t think you can necessarily say ‘Hey because the first round he would have smashed him…’
“Imagine if Charles Oliveira would have broke his hand, broke his elbow, broke his leg, broke his foot, at the end of that first round (against me)… We could have easily said ‘Oh well Chandler was about to run through him. Chandler would have done what he did in the first round, for two, three, four, and five. He would’ve ran through him, would’ve knocked him out.’ And what happened? I got caught in the second round, Charles Oliveira is your lightweight champion.”
The eagerly anticipated lightweight match-up between Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler finally appears to be happening. Brett Okamoto of ESPN broke the news of a verbal agreement between the two fighters last night. “Ohhhh boy. Here we go, folks,” Okamoto wrote on social media. “Gaethje (@Justin_Gaethje). Chandler (@MikeChandlerMMA). Verbally agreed, per sources. UFC 268 PPV. […]

“Ohhhh boy. Here we go, folks,” Okamoto wrote on social media. “Gaethje (@Justin_Gaethje). Chandler (@MikeChandlerMMA). Verbally agreed, per sources. UFC 268 PPV. No official date or venue for that PPV just yet, but the target is Nov. 6, Madison Square Garden.”
‘The Highlight’ hasn’t been seen inside the Octagon since October 2020. The 32-year-old fell short in his bid to unify the division against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254. Gaethje ended up being choked unconscious in the second round. The loss to Khabib snapped Gaethje’s four-fight winning streak.
Chandler is coming off an unsuccessful title bid of his own. The former Bellator champion fell to a second-round TKO defeat at the hands of Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC 262. Before that, he made an impressive start to his UFC career by quickly stopping Dan Hooker at UFC 257.
In May, Dana White talked up a potential fight between Gaethje and Chandler. Understandably, fight fans got excited about another blockbuster lightweight bout. For one reason or another, the UFC boss has been unable to book the fight – until now.
Gaethje vs. Chandler seems likely to be the co-main event at UFC 268. Kamaru Usman will headline the card when he defends his belt against Colby Covington in an eagerly anticipated welterweight rematch.
