Michael Chandler remains upbeat despite falling short in his bid to become the UFC lightweight champion this past weekend.

The former Bellator titlist squared off against Charles Oliveira in the UFC 262 main event which took place in Houston on Saturday night.

Chandler started the fight very well and enjoyed a dominant first round in which he hurt his Brazilian opponent on several occasions. Things quickly unraveled for Chandler in round two when he was caught flush with a left hand and ultimately finished by Oliveira who claimed the vacant 155lb title.

The 35-year-old kept things positive as he addressed his loss at UFC 262 and insisted the best is yet to come in a recent social media post.

“Hitting the ground running after a tough weekend, a tough loss, falling short, a great opportunity that we missed the mark, and that’s just the way life is,” he said. “Sometimes, life’s going to deal you those kinds of things. Sometimes, you’re going to encounter scars, bruises – but the scars and bruises remind them that you’re still here, you’ve still got a smile on your face, and you’re still moving forward with complete disregard to previous failures and future opposition.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Chandler is now 1-1 inside the Octagon. He enjoyed a fantastic promotional debut when he squared off against Dan Hooker at UFC 257 earlier this year. Chandler dictated the fight from the first bell and ultimately finished the usually tough Hooker quicker than anyone ever has.

Michael Chandler is keeping his head held high following UFC 262.

Chandler was just seconds away from becoming the new lightweight champion after hurting Charles Oliveira in the first round of their title fight in the UFC 262 headliner last night.

However, Oliveira survived and would go on to hurt Chandler himself in the second round as he earned the TKO win and became the new lightweight champion.

It wasn’t the fairytale Chandler wanted. However, he did soak up the moments leading up to the fight and certainly felt like he belonged in the UFC.

“I feel like I’m right where I’m supposed to be,” Chandler said at the post-fight press conference (via Middle Easy). “I do. I was just enjoying the moment, the fans back. … I just felt like I was in the right moment. A smile was on my face again. I feel like I’m fighting on borrowed time still. There were moments in my career where I’d never thought I’d end up here. I never thought the door would open and now it has. The first one was the highest of highs.

“This one, it’s not the lowest of lows, because Charles Oliveira is world class. Fighting for a UFC title is a world-class opportunity. But as my son knows, every young man falls, but every young man gets back up. The sun will rise tomorrow. When I fly home without the belt, we’ve got some explaining to do but we’re going to figure it out.”

Following the defeat, Chandler told Joe Rogan that he still planned on becoming a UFC champion within the next 12 months. The former Bellator champion still feels that way as he feels he can still beat anyone in the top five of the lightweight division.

“Here we are. I’ve been here before after losses,” Chandler added. “This sport moves quickly. I am still world class. Anybody next to get me into line for the title again, I believe I can beat them and then beat anybody in the top five so we’ll see what happens.”

It will be interesting to see what’s next for Chandler but one thing is for sure — he certainly proved he is one of the best 155ers in the world.

Dustin Poirier gave his immediate reaction to Charles Oliveira claiming the vacant lightweight strap with a second-round TKO win over Michael Chandler at UFC 262.

‘Do Bronx’ survived some deep trouble in round one before blitzing the former Bellator champ in round two to claim the strap recently vacated by Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Poirier who passed up on a fight against Oliveira for the belt in favour of a lucrative trilogy bout against Conor McGregor, took to social media to congratulate the new champion and offer some words of encouragement to Chandler.

“Congratulations @CharlesDoBronxs you earned that the hard way! Head up @MikeChandlerMMA highest of the highs and lowest of the lows,” Poirier wrote on Twitter.

Poirier’s UFC 264 opponent was also quick to congratulate Oliveira but his words got a much more fiery response from the new champion.

“Congrats to Olivera on becoming the 11th UFC lightweight champion,” McGregor wrote on social media. “Wonder who Twelve is…”

“Conor, since you’re so tough, first beat Dustin, then come to Brazil and I’ll put you on your ass,” Oliveira said at the UFC 262 post-fight press conference. “He’s just one of these guys that talks a lot. He needs to beat Dustin first.”

It seems like the winner of Poirier vs. McGregor III, which takes place July 10 in Las Vegas, will be next in line for a shot at Oliveira. Although, Dana White refused to be drawn on who the Brazilian could fight next when speaking with the press post-fight.

Do you think Dustin Poirier will be the opponent for Charles Oliveiras’s first lightweight title defence?
