Beneil Dariush believes that Michael Chandler would be undefeated if he had a better mindset.

Chandler is coming off a historic win over Tony Ferguson in May at UFC 274. He became the first athlete to knock Ferguson out cold with a vicious front kick to the face. He is set to face Dustin Poirier in his next bout at UFC 281 on Nov. 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

‘Iron’ Mike has delivered entertaining shows since joining the promotion last year but failed in his quest to become the lightweight champion when Charles Oliveira beat him in Dec. 2021.

Michael Chandler could be undefeated, says Beneil Dariush

In a recent interview with Helen Yee, Beneil Dariush suggested that Michael Chandler would be undefeated if he didn’t aim to put on a show for the fans.

“I think if it’s three rounds, 60-40 I lean towards Dustin,” Dariush said (BJ Penn.com). “Only because Michael Chandler’s focused so much on being exciting, I think he actually gives up a lot of his skill sets. I think he could actually do way better than he’s done. I think he’s, what, 2-2 in the UFC? I think he could be undefeated right now if he had a better mindset, but he’s so focused on being entertaining and exciting, he’s lost two fights.”

Dariush rubbished Chandler’s title shot chances

Chandler has been rallying for a second chance at the 155-pound gold and believes a win over Dustin Poirier in his next bout would earn him the title shot. Dariush does not agree with Chandler and made his case instead.

“Honestly, I think he’s just trying to hype himself up. I don’t think that’s true. But if that does happen, man, that’s basically a clown show. What? The guy just had a title shot and lost and then lost again. So it doesn’t make sense. After I beat Gamrot, I don’t think there’s anyone who could step in front of me,” Dariush said.

Dustin Poirier wishes ‘huge’ UFC 281 clash with Michael Chandler was five rounds: ‘It could be Fight of the Century’

Dustin Poirier

Former interim UFC lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier maintains he would have preferred to face upcoming opponent, one-time title chaser, Michael Chandler over the course of five rounds rather than the sanctioned three round limit, as the pair prepare to do battle at UFC 281 on November 12.

Poirier, the current #3 ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined since December of last year at UFC 269, headlining in an eventual fourth round standing rear-naked choke loss against former undisputed titleholder, Charles Oliveira.

As for Chandler, the Kill Cliff FC mainstay turned in his second UFC victory back in May, stopping former interim titleholder, Tony Ferguson with a stunning second front kick knockout win.

Linked with an eventual showdown against American Top Team trainee, Poirier upon his landing in the Octagon, the duo will finally clash as part of a blockbuster Madison Square Garden card on November 12. in New York City.

Dustin Poirier prefers five round fight with Michael Chandler at UFC 281

Set to take place over the course of three rounds, Dustin Poirier, at least, claimed how he wished the promotion would have elected to book a five round, non-headlining bout, as they’ve done in the past.

“I really wanted to do a five round fight,” Dustin Poirier told Heavy Sports reporter, Nikhil Sharma, during a recent interview. “Especially for me, I like to get a rhythm and a timing, and I feel like the better fighter – unless something happens early in one of the first couple of rounds, the better fighter usually wins in the distance.”

Previewing his pivotal potential title eliminator against Chandler, Poirier hopes to turn in a “clean” performance, however, insists the bout could go down as the Fight of the Century due to the pair’s abilities.

“He’s (Michael Chandler) a former (Bellator) world champion,” Dustin Poirier explained. “He’s one of the best 155-pounders in the world, so he’s a very, very tough opponent. If it’s Fight of the Year, that means it’s back-and-forth. I’d like it to be clean, one-sided if I couple paint the perfect picture.”

“But I don’t shy away from those firefights,” Poirier continued. “I’m going to try my best to stay calm under fire and technical, but if he competes to the best of his ability, and I do the same, it coule be Fight of the Century.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Prior to his submission loss to Oliveira, Poirier scored a pair of back-to-back rematch and subsequent rubber-match wins over former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor last year.

UFC lightweight Islam Makhachev has responded to Michael Chandler questioning the validity of Makhachev’s title shot.

In just a few weeks, MMA fans will be treated to a fascinating matchup between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira, who will face off for the vacant lightweight title.

Although Makhachev owns an impressive 11-1 UFC record and has not tasted defeat since 2015, his title shot did not come without criticism. When Makhachev meets Oliveira at UFC 280, it will be the first time that the Russian has faced a top-five ranked opponent.

Makhachev highest ranked win was over Dan Hooker, who was ranked No.9 at the time but is currently ranked No.14. the 31-year-old does also hold a win over Arman Tsarukyan, who is presently ranked No.10 but was unranked at the time.

Islam Makhachev and Michael Chandler’s back-and-forth

Former lightweight title Michael Chandler is one of those who believe that Mahkachev has not done enough to warrant a shot at gold. The 36-year-old said while Mahkachev is undoubtedly talented, it’s still too early yet.

“Nothing against Islam, you say he looks great, you say he looks unbeatable at times, but he hasn’t really fought anybody,” Chandler told MMA Fighting. “That’s really the truth. He beat No. 14 and then he beat Dan Hooker, who was on a three or four-fight losing streak.

“I’m not saying that [Islam] not that good, we just can’t say that he’s that good yet. It’s premature praise.” (H/T MMAFighitng)

It wouldn’t take long for Makhachev to respond to Chandler, taking to Twitter to slam the American, telling him to “shut up and stay in line”.

“Haha., your only two win in UFC is Hooker who came out of loss, and Tony who has 5 losses in the row now., please shut up and stay in line” Makhachev responded.

Although Makhachev does not hold a lot of ranked wins, with the opponents that have been presented to him, he has at times looked unbeatable. The Dagestan native poses elite grappling skills and strength levels and has stopped his last four opponents.
