UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler says that, on paper, he doesn’t earn more for fighting in the UFC than he did in Bellator MMA.

In late 2020, former three-time Bellator champion Chandler signed with the UFC. Ahead of his debut last January, it’s safe to say that not many would have predicted the four-fight Octagon tenure he’s had to date.

So far, he’s recorded a first-round debut knockout, challenged for the 155-pound title, played his part in 2021’s Fight of the Year, and delivered one of the all-time great KOs.

With those achievements, as well as the fact he’s competed on four pay-per-view main cards, including a championship main event and in the co-featured slot at a Conor McGregor-headlined event, you’d perhaps feel confident in saying that “Iron” Mike has increased his fight earnings in the UFC.

Well, apparently not.

During a recent appearance on the How U Livin J Piven podcast, Chandler was asked how his fight purses in MMA’s premier promotion compare to his take-home earnings in Bellator, where he competed from 2010 to 2020.

The 36-year-old started off by noting that he doesn’t receive more lucrative purses despite now fighting inside the Octagon.

“You know what it is? I make more money, (but) I don’t necessarily make more money on paper or in my fights,” said Chandler.

However, that doesn’t mean that Chandler hasn’t been able to improve his income thanks to his UFC association.

Chandler: UFC Gives Me The Opportunity To Earn More

While his UFC checks may not exceed those he received from the Scott Coker-led promotion, Chandler went on to suggest that he’s been able to raise his earnings considerably outside of the cage, something he didn’t have the opportunity to do with the lesser coverage of Bellator.

To do so, Chandler said that maintaining a positive and entertaining reputation throughout his career meant that when he did arrive on MMA’s biggest stage, he was allowed to make an immediate and notable impact.

“What I’ve been able to do is — once again, going back to my reputation, I have been a smaller name, I may have been a guy who was overlooked, I may have been a guy who (people) said, ‘Well, he’s not that legitimate ’cause he fights in Bellator,’ but one thing I always did, was I kept a really good reputation,” noted Chandler. “I kept my nose clean, I stayed out of the negative headlines, I was always in the positive headlines, and then my fights spoke for themselves. I was an entertainer.”

With that in mind, the Missouri native has been able to utilize his placement on prominent UFC cards to expand his business relations and partnerships outside of the Octagon.

“It all kinda just built this long-standing résumé for when I did come over to the UFC to be the co-main event on Conor (McGregor) vs. (Dustin) Poirier—almost two million pay-per-view buys, and then I was the main event for a world title fight, and then I was on another huge pay-per-view,” said Chandler.

“The amount of eyeballs that I’ve been given and afforded by the UFC coincided with this great reputation of being a hard worker, being a man of integrity, being a hard-nosed fighter, being a fighter, a father, a husband,” Chandler continued. “It just meshed perfectly, and I’ve been able to make a lot of money outside the cage and have some great relationships with some great companies and some great people.”

Given his latest performance, a brutal front-kick knockout of Tony Ferguson at UFC 274, it stands to reason that Chandler will have gotten the attention of a few more companies and organizations.

Former two division champion Conor McGregor called Justin Gaethje a clown for questioning Charles Oliveira’s toughness.

Oliveira’s toughness should never be questioned ever again. He has made amazing comebacks in all his championship fights and even came back from multiple knockdowns the other night at UFC 274 against Justin Gaethje. Gaethje had Oliveira right where he wanted him, but refused to go on the ground with him. Oliveira ended up submitting Gaethje after being in a few early predicaments.

Coming into the fight, Gaethje had called Oliveira a quitter and questioned his heart. Even after his miraculous comeback against Michael Chandler and Dustin Poirier, Gaethje still questioned his toughness publicly.

“I was saying that in the times that he’s lost, he didn’t even get knocked out, he quit sometimes. The choice to quit is something one makes, and once you make it, you can make it again, because you know that it’s there.” Gaethje had previously said about Oliveira’s toughness.

Conor McGregor took too Twitter to call out Justin Gaethje about his comments

“This absolute clown! The aul pretend to be asleep after he tapped as well lol. Jackass” McGregor tweeted out.

McGregor hasn’t fought since he broken his leg fighting Poirier for the third time. There have been rumbles of who McGregor may fight when he comes back and a fight with Gaethje could be in the future. Gaethje and McGregor would be a fantastic matchup for both fighters. Gaethje has some of the best power in the division, but he isn’t ver technical. McGregor makes his money fighting against guys that strike wildly, as he is one of the games best counter strikers.

Although cutting down to 155 may not be in McGregor’s future. He has said multiple times that he has wanted to fight more at 170 than anywhere else. He has been putting on a lot of muscle since his leg injury.

UFC lightweight contender Michael Chandler has revealed that his viral knockout of Tony Ferguson wasn’t actually thrown with fight-finishing intent.

This past weekend’s UFC 274 main card had elements of action on both ends of the spectrum. While Maurício Rua and Ovince Saint Preux drew boos for a slow-paced rematch and Rose Namajunas and Carla Esparza put on perhaps the worst title fight in UFC history, sandwiched between them was a KO worthy of just about every accolade possible.

The lightweight collision between Chandler and Ferguson promised two things: unforgettable action and a damaging loss for one veteran. In the second round, the first element came courtesy of a Chandler front kick, leaving the other certainty on the side of “El Cucuy,” who left the arena with a fourth loss added to his skid.

For Chandler, a second victory inside the Octagon has brought him back into contention and lined him up for another big fight next time out. But judging by his latest comments, perhaps that’s more by luck than judgment…

Chandler: “It’s Not Something I Train”

During a recent post-fight appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Chandler discussed the memorable KO and how it came to fruition.

Despite landing what appeared to be the perfect front kick, the former Bellator champion revealed that he rarely trains or throws any kicks, let alone the one that delivered the knockout blow in Phoenix.

“It’s actually hilarious because it’s not something I train a lot. To be quite honest with you, I’m more of a punch-heavy striker,” admitted Chandler. “I don’t throw a lot of kicks. Truthfully, because I hurt my foot more often than not. I hurt myself more than I hurt my opponents, so I don’t throw a ton of kicks.”

Nevertheless, Chandler and his team had identified a gap in Ferguson’s defense that could be exploited by head kicks and uppercuts. But despite acknowledging that, Chandler actually said he only threw the kick to establish range.

That’s got to be the most effective range-finder we’ve ever seen…

“We saw his hands were on both sides of his head. He was kinda leaving a lane up the middle,” said Chandler. “So, I was gonna throw high-lows and uppercuts. But the kick up the middle looked like it was gonna land so — I honestly threw it out there for a range-finder, but turns out I threw it with some ill intent and it landed on the chin and he crumbled, and the rest is history.”

If there’s one thing Chandler’s four-fight run in the UFC has shown us so far, it’s that unpredictability is the name of the game for “Iron” Mike. Although on this occasion, he seemingly even surprised himself.

Nate Diaz wants to meet Michael Chandler to finally close out his current UFC contract.

At UFC 274, Michael Chandler defeated Tony Ferguson in what is already the arguable frontrunner for knockout of the year. When Chandler was granted the microphone, he had plenty to share. One particular thing that stood out was his pitch for a potential fight against Conor McGregor at 170 lbs.

Someone who is very familiar with fighting Conor McGregor at 170 lbs. is one Nate Diaz, who tweeted out the following one day after UFC 274.

“July 30th, 170lbs.”

Diaz is well known for his cryptic tweets, so one can’t be certain that he was referring to a fight against Chandler. However, given the timing of the tweet, Chandler decided to act fast to prevent the unexpected money train from passing him by just in case.

“I’m there. Quick turn around. Spin your head on its axis,” Chandler said in response to Diaz.

“Hey @natediaz209 …shut up and stop complaining. Keep your mouth shut. Keep your head down until your daddy books a fight for you to get your sacrificial dome bounced off the canvas again. Maybe it’ll be me…if you’re lucky. See you at the top!” Chandler added.

If Chandler wanted to get Diaz’s attention, his attempt proved successful, as less than 48 hours later, Diaz posted the following response:

“UFC got me on ice for a year now chandlers obviously ready to fight send a contract it’s time.”

Diaz’s frustrations with the UFC brass about remaining unbooked for the final fight of his contract have been made public for several weeks now. Dana White recently revisited the idea of Diaz fighting Khamzat Chimaev, but Diaz remains insistent on calling his own shots.

Prior to Chandler, Diaz had targeted a fight against Dustin Poirier. Those talks stalled for undisclosed reasons. Perhaps he’ll have better luck with another lightweight willing to move up for a big fight in Michael Chandler.

As it happens, Dustin Poirier also teased interest in a fight against Chandler just yesterday. You’ll want to keep it locked here on MMA News to see who will be paired with the buzzing “Iron” Michael Chandler next.
