IT’S TIME! The UFC Fight Island 8 main event is finally upon us. Welterweight contenders Michael Chiesa and Neil Magny are set to throw down for five, five-minute rounds…
Round 1: Michael Chiesa lands a low leg kick early but eats a punch from Neil Magny for his efforts. Chiesa lands a nice upkick to the body. He’s being really active on his feet and continues to circle around the Octagon. Magny is pushing forward but is struggling to get in range. Lot’s of feints and posturing without the action right now. Chiesa lands a nice straight shot. Magny returns with a straight punch of his own – he’s really pushing forward. Chiesa dips down and secures his first takedown of the fight. He immediately begins trying to advance position. The TUF winner is trying to set up a kimura but is forced to release it as Magny attempts to sweep. Chiesa is putting lot’s of pressure on. He’s landing lot’s of short strikes to try and soften up Magny and advance position before the horn sounds to end round one.
Round 2: Chiesa goes straight back to clinch and is trying to drag this fight back to the mat. Magny is defending well and has managed to reverse position against the fence. Chiesa turns the tables again. He drags the fight to the floor. Magny tries a submission forcing Chiesa to scramble. Magny pops back up but it’s only for a moment before Chiesa gets him down again. Chiesa drops an elbow that appears to cut his opponent. Chiesa with lot’s of top pressure and he’s staying busy enough to maintain the position. Chiesa tries to jump to mount but Magny resists. Chiesa postures up to drop a big punch before jumping back into the half guard as the horn sounds to end round two.
Round 3: Magny is putting his hands together at the start of this round. He charges forward and lands well but ends up in the clinch position against the fence. This is not where he wants to be. He’s in a strong position but has been outworked a lot in similar spots. Not this time though. Magny secures the takedown and jumps to the back of his opponent. Chiesa works his way back up. They tussle against the fence some more before going back to the center. Chiesa lands a nice punch. He charges forward for the takedown but settles for control against the fence. Mangy reverses the position and moves to the back. They continue to exchange positions against the fence. Chiesa eventually secures the takedown. There’s a scramble for the position but Chiesa ends up on top and quickly takes the mount. It looks detrimental for Magny but he escapes quickly and forces Chiesa back into his half guard. Magny is getting off some offence from the bottom but it is Chiesa who rides out round three in control.
Round 4: Into the championship rounds we go! Both men still look really fresh. Chiesa lands a beautiful straight shot then immediately secures a takedown. Chiesa is getting more aggressive in the top position now. Lot’s of ground strikes and top pressure. Chiesa is working for a kimura. Magny resists and begins to work his way back up. Chiesa jumps on the back and is threatening with the choke before jumping to the mount. It’s not long before Chiesa returns to the back mount. Magny survives and pops back to his feet. He begins to wade forward with punches. The fight quickly returns to the mat. Magny is working on an inverted triangle. He’s using it to drop strikes but eventually surrenders position and finishes round four on the bottom.
Round 5: Magny probably needs a finish in round five. He’s pushing forward early. Chiesa is staying light on his feet and evading strikes. Chiesa lands a nice strike but Magny continues to advance. Magny tries to put a combo together but Chiesa dips under and initiates the clinch. Magny uses the clinch to drag Chiesa down but he’s out scrambled and it’s the TUF winner that ends up on top once again. Chiesa continues to transition between the half guard and threatening with taking the back. Lot’s of top pressure as we’ve seen so often in this fight. He pops into the full mount for a moment before Magny recovers quickly. Lot’s of effort from the bottom by Magny but it only means he gives up the mount and ends the fight in that position.

Jordan Ellis: This is a true 50-50 fight. I’ve been torn over my pick for days but I’m backing Michael Chiesa heading into this one. This is purely based on recent form. Chiesa has looked flawless since moving up to welterweight. He’s easily handled three opponents consecutively. Neil Magny, on the other hand, was great last time out against a past-it Robbie Lawler but prior to that, he looked unconvincing against Anthony Rocco Martin and Li Jingliang. For that reason, I see him losing at UFC Fight Island 8.
Prediction: Michael Chiesa
Ryan MacCarthy: A lot of people are saying Neil Magny is the dark horse in this division. He’s 24-7 and has won 3 straight, but I’m wary of Magny in this one. His biggest weakness in his game is the ground game, and in this fight, he’ll be going against a purple belt in BJJ and one of the best grapplers in the welterweight division. Michael Chiesa is sitting at 17-4 winner of 3 straight as well. In my opinion, I see Chiesa winning this one on the ground, finishing Magny in the 3rd via rear-naked choke.
Prediction: Michael Chiesa
Abhinav Kini: This is a really hard one to call. If Chiesa is able to get it to the ground, he will likely dictate the fight and grind his way to a submission or decision victory. However, if Magny can keep it standing, I give him the edge especially after his improved striking and overall performances last year. Again, it’s so hard to pick but I’ll go with Magny getting the win
Prediction: Neil Magny
Chris De Santiago: It was an unfortunate thing that we couldn’t see Leon Edwards take on Khamzat Chimaev, however, the UFC upgraded this already great fight to the main event, so we’re all winners. I believe Chiesa has the arsenal to ride out Neil Magny for a unanimous decision win. Chiesa is a very crafty jiu-jitsu player and we have seen Magny struggle with BJJ specialists in the past. He was put on his back easily by Demian Maia and was easily taken down by Rafael Dos Anjos. Magny’s key to winning is keeping distance and picking Chiesa apart in the standup exchanges. He can’t let Chiesa close in on him or he will take him down, which I think will happen many times in this fight. Chiesa’s pressure will push Magny into the cage allowing for much Octagon control and high takedown percentage rate. I believe once it gets to the ground, Chiesa will have top position for every round. I believe it goes the distance and Chiesa will get the nod. I would not be surprised to see Chiesa pull off a rear-naked choke though.
Prediction: Michael Chiesa
Ty Rosson: My head says Magny but my heart says, Chiesa. Magny has been a great run, winning three straight over high-level opponents. He will use his long 80-inch reach to his advantage like he always does and use his high fight IQ to keep himself out of bad positions. On the other hand, Chiesa has looked like a new man since coming up to welterweight and his win over RDA was the best thus far in his career. I think he has the advantage on the ground and a slight speed advantage too. Chiesa gets the win by third-round submission after a tough first two rounds.
Prediction: Michael Chiesa
Alex Lough: While I’m excited for this fight between two of the best welterweights on the planet, there’s a reason you’re not going to be seeing this one on ABC. Magny’s game is built around a strong jab from the outside before pinning you up against the cage and working in knees, elbows, and dirty boxing. Chiesa wants to work his jab before grabbing hold of his opponents and taking them to the ground. The end result will most likely be a whole lot of clinch work along the cage with the occasional takedown, with the fighter on top riding out the round. That being said, I think Magny has more ways to find a win here. His striking is better and more versatile, his takedown defense is strong, and his grappling has improved since the Maia and Dos Anjos fights. On top of that, Chiesa is a Sikjitsu guy, and they leave a ton of openings in their striking defense, particularly to the body. Magny is as wily as they come, and I think he finds a way to take the decision.
Prediction: Neil Magny
Frank Bonada: With such talented athletes this one is such a hard pick on paper. Michael Chiesa has incredibly high-level Jiu-Jitsu credentials, having submitted the like of Carlos Condit and Beneil Dariush. Magny is a solid well-rounded fighter, currently riding a 3-fight win streak. Whilst each fight did go to a decision, they all allowed Magny to demonstrate his skills as a complete mixed martial artist. It is in the clinch that Magny does some of his best work however, just ask Robbie Lawler. This is an interesting conundrum because Chiesa’s most used method of taking the fight to the mat is through a body lock takedown. In my opinion, the first round will most likely involve a lot of clinch work, with Magny stuffing much of Chiesa’s attempts to bring the fight to the ground. However, Chiesa will eventually breakthrough, and drag Magny into his wheelhouse. After that, I see Chiesa catching Magny with a submission finish, late round 2 or 3.

LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC Fight Island 8: Chiesa vs. Magny results throughout the afternoon (Wed. 20th. January 2021) from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Taking main event status on short-notice in what could prove to be a pivotal welterweight clash, The Ultimate Fighter 15 victor, Michael ‘The Maverick’ Chiesa meets with 170-pound mainstay, ‘The Haitian Sensation’ Neil Magny, with both hoping to earn a matchup against a top-five contender next, as they offer up three-fight win streaks, respectively.
Making his Octagon return for the first time in a year, submission threat, Chiesa has been flawless since his move to welterweight, besting former WEC and interim UFC welterweight champion, Carlos Condit, and one-time lightweight title chaser, Diego Sanchez to kickstart a two-fight rise. Co-headlining UFC Fight Night Raleigh last January, Chiesa defeated former 155-pound gold holder, Rafael dos Anjos via a unanimous decision.
Elevation Fight Team staple, Magny has himself witnessed a purple-patch of late. Amassing three wins on the trot, the Brooklyn native has taken three consecutive unanimous decision wins over Li Jingliang, Anthony Rocco Martin, and an August victory over former welterweight kingpin, ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler.
A pair of 170-pound talents also feature in the co-main event as The Ultimate Fighter 3: Brazil victor, Warlley Alves meets with Tunisian striker, Mounir ‘The Sniper’ Lazzez.
Hoping to rebound to the winner’s enclosure, Alves battled opposite Randy Brown at UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo in November 2019, and makes his Octagon return off the back of a second-round triangle loss.
10-1 as a professional, Lazzez made his promotional bow at UFC Fight Island 1 in July, featuring against renowned knockout-ace Abdul Razak Alhassan, picking up a unanimous judging win over the power-puncher over three-rounds.
