Bellator welterweight star Michael “Venom” Page has explained the rationale for his decision to compete in bare-knuckle boxing later this year.

Page shocked the combat sports world last week when it was announced he would be fighting Mike Perry in the Bare Knuckle FC 27 main event on August 20th. While he has fought in boxing in between Bellator fights in the past, this will be the first time he’s competed in bare-knuckle.

Page is looking to return to MMA later this year in Bellator, potentially in October. However, he wants to stay active in the meantime and will be allowed to fight in BKFC.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Page spoke about what led to his interest in fighting bare-knuckle.

“Since it got legalized, I was definitely curious about doing it,” Page shared. “More so because in my youth, a lot of my elders and people I looked up to were doing it. It was a bit more underground. It was always something that I felt was a rite of passage as a fighter. A combatant, a warrior, which I class myself as. So when it started to get more popular I thought ‘yeah one day, I might jump in there’. Didn’t think it would be as quick as this, but it’s definitely been in my mind.”

Page most recently fought against Logan Storley for the interim welterweight title at Bellator 281. He lost via a split decision after winning six straight fights.

Page will face a game opponent in Perry, a former UFC fighter who recently enjoyed a successful BKFC debut against Julian Lane. Page was complimentary of his upcoming adversary.

“He’s a beast,” Page said. “I’m not gonna go in there and work my way up, it’s gotta be the guys at the top… he’s a tough guy and a true warrior. Bare-knuckle definitely suits him, and I feel like it suits me as well.”

Page will look to join other fellow MMA standouts such as Chad Mendes and Alan Belcher who have made the successful move to BKFC. He’ll look to continue his pursuit of a Bellator title when he returns to the cage by the end of the year.

Bellator welterweight contender Michael ‘Venom’ Page wants to run it back with interim welterweight champion Logan Storley as soon as possible.

Page lost via split decision against Storley at Bellator 281 just weeks ago. After originally being scheduled to fight Yaroslav Amosov for the welterweight title, Page competed against Storley for the interim belt after Amosov withdrew.

Storley controlled the fight with his wrestling but was criticized by Bellator president Scott Coker and others for his lack of volume striking on the ground. Page was unable to consistently stuff takedowns and eliminate Storley’s ground game.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Page gave his thoughts on the fight and what he wants next.

“I’m a very petty person,” Page said. “He’s won but not in any kind of spectacular fashion. I’ve legit had harder spars. The reason I say it that way is because physically I don’t have a bruise, I don’t have a sore, I don’t have an ache. Anything. It doesn’t even feel like I’ve had a five-round fight. That’s probably the most frustrating thing about it, is losing in a way where I know for a fact I could go into a fight this weekend and feel fine and be good to go. I know he couldn’t say the same.”

Luckily for Page, he has recently friendly history when it comes to rematches. He defeated Douglas Lima at Bellator 267 via split decision after suffering a second-round knockout to Lima at Bellator 221 just years earlier.

Before his loss to Storley, Page had picked up wins over the likes of Derek Anderson, Shinsho Anzai, and Lima. Storley and Lima are the only two opponents to defeat him in the Bellator cage.

While Page will more than likely not get his wishes in the form of a rematch with Storley right away, he seems motivated to get back into the title picture and pursue a second fight with him down the line.

How do you think a Michael ‘Venom’ Page vs. Logan Storley rematch would play out?

Scott Coker Criticizes Logan Storley’s Win: “You Can’t Just Lay On Somebody”

Bellator President Scott Coker thinks interim welterweight champion Logan Storley could’ve done more in his win at Bellator 281. Bellator President Scott Coker thinks interim welterweight champion Logan Storley could’ve done more in his win at Bellator 281.

Storley defeated Michael Venom Page via split decision in the Bellator 281 headliner. He won with his wrestling and was able to survive barrages from Page on the feet to secure the victory.

But Storley’s approach to his win over Page didn’t go without criticism. Many fans and pundits questioned the final scorecards due to Storley’s reluctance to put out offense after scoring takedowns.

During his Bellator 281 post-fight press conference, Coker explained why he feels Storley did a disservice to the viewing audience.

“Honestly, I think Logan has some improvement to do myself too,” Coker said of Storley. “You can’t just lay on somebody and think you’re gonna win and score points, that’s not MMA, that’s wrestling. To me, if you’re gonna wrestle, you have to continue to wrestle and then try to submit, ground-and-pound, strike.

“There’s a difference between what you see on the wrestling mat and what you see in the cage. To me, all these fighters…. they’re at the very highest level of what they do. But, they owe it to themselves, they owe it to the audience, to the fans… to continue to get better at the disciplines that they’re not strong in.”

Coker went on to answer how he scored the Storley vs. Page headliner.

“I thought [Page] won that fight,” Coker revealed. “The reason I say that… Half of the round, he was striking. The other half, you can’t just lay on somebody. You’re not doing any damage, you’re not getting close to a submission, you’re not creating any threat. You’re just laying on somebody, and that’s not MMA.”

Storley earned a shot for the interim title after welterweight champion Yaroslav Amosov pulled out of his fight with Page to fight on the front lines in Ukraine. Page earned the title shot by defeating Douglas Lima via a split decision.

Despite Coker’s criticism, Storley will face Amosov at a later date in a rematch of their close fight at Bellator 252. The former Division I wrestling standout will look to bring a more well-rounded game to the champion in his next Bellator appearance.

Yaroslav Amosov, Michael Page

Bellator is currently working to put flashy welterweight Michael “Venom” Page against champion Yaroslav Amosov for a card in London, England.

Bellator President Scott Coker revealed the plans in a recent interview with MMA Junkie. He mentioned he hopes to make the fight for early 2022, although an exact date hasn’t been worked out yet.

Coker said that Page was hesitant for a title fight, but eventually decided that he wanted the title fight. Page had publicly noted before that he preferred to face Douglas Lima – a fighter he just beat – in a trilogy bout.

“I know MVP was kinda back-and-forth, ‘do I want to fight Lima again, do I want to fight Amosov’ and then we said hey, just go think about it,” Coker said. “Our opinion as a company is you want to take the next step. You want to go fight for the belt now. This is your time. If you don’t do it now, when are you gonna do it? and then you can come back and fight Lima again in the future. So to me, it’s the right fight to put together. I think it’ll happen in the second quarter. It will be in London and it will be a massive fight over there because he’s such a big star.” (h/t MMA Junkie)
