UFC veteran welterweight Michel Prazeres has hit back at USADA after handing him a four-year suspension for performance-enhancing drugs.

Prazeres tested positive for clomiphene and oxandrolone ahead of his previously scheduled fight with Clay Guida earlier this year. The suspension more than likely ends his time with the UFC at 40 years old.

Prazeres allegedly contemplated retirement shortly after news of the suspension but later backtracked after learning that he can still compete in other countries. It’s unclear if Prazeres will opt to fight for a smaller promotion, including in his native Brazil.

During a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Prazeres gave his side of the story regarding him testing positive for the drugs and his overall experience testing with USADA.

Michel Prazeres Says He Used The Drugs For Fertility Treatment

“I told [USADA] everything. I said my wife and I were doing treatment to have another baby,” Prazeres said. “This is not a steroid, this is a medication. They interviewed me, my wife, and my doctor, they took all the receipts and medical records, the exams I’ve done, and these sons of b*tches still do that?

“I couldn’t give a sh*t [about USADA]. I can fight in Brazil, I can make money in Brazil.”

Despite Prazeres’ defense, clomiphene and oxandrolone are both considered to be performance enhancers under USADA’s policies. Prazeres has yet to appeal the ruling.

Prazeres has enjoyed a long tenure in the UFC, making his promotional debut in 2013. To put things in perspective, Prazeres’ second fight in the fight was at UFC 165, which is where former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson had their all-time great first matchup.

Prazeres’ suspension by USADA is arguably their highest-profile case since former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw in 2019.

Prazeres earned big wins over the likes of Gilbert Burns and Bartosz Fabinski during his time in the Octagon.

UFC veteran welterweight Michel Prazeres has been handed a four-year suspension by USADA after testing positive for clomiphene and oxandrolone ahead of his previously scheduled bout with Clay Guida.

This isn’t the first time that Prazeres has been suspended long-term by USADA. He was served with a two-year suspension in 2019 and is now ineligible to compete in the country until 2025, pending appeal.

After originally aiming at retirement, Prazeres later walked back on leaving the fight game after it was noted that he could still compete in other areas, including his native Brazil. It’s unclear if Prazeres will seek free agency and fight in another promotion.

Prazeres later spoke with MMA Fighting and clarified the reasoning for the positive drug tests. He alleged that it was to treat fertility issues after his wife suffered a miscarriage in 2018.

“I told [USADA] everything. I said my wife and I were doing treatment to have another baby,” Prazeres said. “This is not a steroid, this is a medication. They interviewed me, my wife, and my doctor, they took all the receipts and medical records, the exams I’ve done, and these sons of b*tches still do that?”

Michel Prazeres Is Ineligible To Fight In UFC Until 2025

The recent suspension brings up quite the dilemma for Prazeres, who recently celebrated his 40th birthday. It’s highly unlikely he’ll be able to fight in the UFC again but could fight for a smaller promotion in the meantime.

Following a loss to Kevin Lee at lightweight in 2015, Prazeres would go on a tear with eight straight victories over the likes of Gilbert Burns, and current Bellator contender Mads Burnell. He most recently lost to Shavkat Rakhmonov earlier this year via second-round submission.

What are your thoughts on Prazeres’ suspension? Where would you like to see him fight next?

Michel Prazeres will likely fight for the last time at lightweight tomorrow.

Prazeres tipped the scales at 161 pounds for his fight with Desmond Green on Saturday night’s UFC card in Belem, Brazil.

The commission says Prazeres will have to compete at welterweight going forward, which Prazeres himself agreed with while speaking to the press following Friday’s weigh-ins  (via MMA Fighting):

“I had already talked to my team about it during this weight cut. My body is feeling the weight cuts, and I’d rather fight at welterweight and take care of my health and put on a better fight for the fans because sometimes I don’t perform as I could in the fights.

”It was an issue in pretty much all of my fights. I’ll be stronger at welterweight. I’m short, but I can surprise with other things.”

Prazeres, who’s notched an impressive five-fight win streak, will go toe-to-toe with Greene, who’s coming off of a loss to Rustam Khabilov in September. However, Prazeres remains adamant that he has plenty to gain from beating his opponent:

“Every fighter that wants to get to the belt has to fight someone from the top, but Desmond Green is a great fighter,”Coming off a loss or not, he’s a dangerous test for me. If you look at his record, he’s a tough fighter and I respect him a lot, but I’m going there to stop him.

”He has a good boxing, a good cardio. He’s tough,” Prazeres continued. “But I think my game kills his. My striking is better than his, and if I take him down it will be complicated for him. Wherever he makes a mistake, I’ll finish the fight.”

The new rule states a fighter can’t cut more than 10 percent of their natural body weight, which will inevitably force many fighters to move up a weight class. Friday’s missed weight is one of several, each time missing by three pounds or more.

With Prazeres being one of those fighters, how would he do at welterweight? Prezeres actually debuted in the UFC as a welterweight in a losing effort to Paulo Thiago back in 2013.

Weight cutting has cost the UFC yet another high-ranking bout.

After bantamweight Pedro Munhoz was among two fighters who missed weight at today’s early weigh-ins for his co-main event bout versus John Dodson at tomorrow’s (Sat., February 3, 2018) UFC Fight Night 125 from Arena Guilherme Paraense in Belém, Brazil, news came from the UFC that the bout has been canceled.

Dodson reportedly refused to fight Munhoz due to a four-pound weight discrepancy.

A women’s flyweight fight between Valentina Shevchenko and Priscila Cachoeira has been promoted to the co-headliner spot.

According to MMA Fighting, the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) said Munhoz would be fined 20 percent of his show money, which would go to Dodson.

Word also came that several fighters in Belem had problems cutting weight due to problems at the hotel where fighters were staying, with many unable to use hot water to aid in cutting weight. Lightweight Michel Prazeres missed weight by an astonishing six pounds for his bout versus Desmond Green and has been forced to move up to 170 pounds.

Main event fighter Eryk Anders also initially missed weight for his middleweight headliner against former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, coming in at 187.9 pounds before being examined by doctors present and given an extra hour to cut the weight, which he did and was cleared to fight tomorrow night.
