Paige VanZant is eyeing a rematch with Michelle Waterson in December if the Joanna Jedrzejczyk fight does not happen.

It was reported on Wednesday that the former UFC champion was struggling cutting weight and the fight may be off. The UFC proposed a catchweight bout to Waterson who said she was not interested. The Las Vegas-based promotion then said she would Jessica Andrade at UFC 244, while Jedrzejczyk would fight Angela Hill.

Yet, it appears that won’t happen, as Joanna Jedrzejczyk has said she will cut the weight. But, if she misses, Paige VanZant has said she is available to fight Waterson.

“Hey @Ufc if Michelle doesn’t have a fight I’ll make 115 and fight her December 14th!!!!,” Paige VanZant wrote.

Paige VanZant last fought back in Brooklyn in January where she submitted Rachael Ostovich. The win snapped her two-fight losing streak with losses to Waterson and Jessica Rose-Clark. She has currently been dealing with rehabbing her broken arm and the surgery for it.

VanZant and Waterson fought back in December of 2016 in the main event of UFC on Fox 22 in Sacramento. There, ‘The Karate Hottie’ won by first-round submission via rear-naked choke. Since the win, Waterson has climbed up the strawweight rankings while VanZant went up to flyweight.

It is interesting to see Paige VanZant call for the fight at 115 which means she may very well be moving down to strawweight. She has said she is open to cutting back down but did not have a definitive answer. She also only has one fight left on her UFC contract where she plans on testing free agency after that.

With a new women’s weight division open for business in the UFC, several top 115 and 135-pound fighters are looking for a way at capturing the flyweight belt.

Former women’s bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko may have twice lost to current champ Amanda Nunes, but a title fight at 125 pounds could obviously yield different results. In order to get there, she may need to win at least one more fight.

That goal in sight, she’s looking at Paige VanZant as her dance partner for a title shot eliminator match at flyweight where the winner takes on the new champ.

VanZant (7-3) is stepping up in weight after several brutal cuts down to 115 pounds. She last lost to Michelle Waterson before declaring her intention to move up a weight division, and was set to face former bantamweight contender Jessica Eye at October’s UFC 216 before a back injury delayed her flyweight debut.

Shevchenko (14-3) is looking for a fresh start after losing a second time to Nunes, who’s showed no signs of slowing down in her dominance over the weight class.

The first women’s flyweight champ will be crowned at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 26 Finale on December 1.

UFC President Dana White has said that Paige VanZant wouldn’t be getting an immediate title shot at flyweight, thus potentially opening up the opportunity for a showdown with Shevchenko. Do you believe this fight should be booked, or would VanZant be in over her head?

Although she didn’t mention any specific names, Michelle Waterson said that she was interested in a big fight after her first round submission win over Paige VanZant in the main event of this past weekend’s (Dec. 17, 2016) UFC on FOX 22 from Sacramento, California.

She may not have to mention any particular names, however, as a certain fighter has expressed interest in a possible bout with her.

No. 4-ranked former title challenger “Thug” Rose Namajunas recently took to her official Instagram account to say that not only are the fans interested in seeing her battle “The Karate Hottie”, but that she is intrigued by the fight as well:

Namajunas is coming off of a loss to Karolina Kowalkiewicz, who most recently challenged for the 115-pound strap, last July, but prior to that she had scored three consecutive victories over the likes of Angela Hill, VanZant and Tecia Torres.

Waterson, on the other hand, is now 2-0 inside of the Octagon with two submission victories.
