We’ve all watched a mixed martial arts fight where one fighter seemed outclassed from the moment the bout was scheduled.

Whether that fighter is facing skill or size obstacles, they still show up and fight, even when faced with insurmountable odds against them.

Take a look at the 10 biggest mismatches in MMA history:

10. Fedor Emelianenko vs. Zuluzinho

Anytime you have what might be the beast heavyweight mixed martial artist of all time in the ring, it may always seem a little lopsided.

That fact was no better demonstrated in his 36-second destruction of Brazilian behemoth Zuluzinho.

While Zulu was a formidable 6 foot 7 and over 400 pounds of human, his ridiculous size was not enough to overcome Fedor’s unbelievable win streak and skill-set.

A straight left hand planted the big man on his bottom. Fedor attacked with lightning quick instinct, and felled his foe before he was able to get to his feet from the very first punch landed.

Sage Northcutt is returning to the only weight class he’s found success in the UFC.

After two submission losses in his last two fights – both of which occurred at 17 pounds – the touted prospect confirmed on this week’s The MMA Hour he would be returning to lightweight for his next fight, a division he called his natural home in MMA:

“You know, obviously, anytime you lose you learn from it,” he said on Monday. “Not that you regret it but it’s a learning experience, and I’ll be back down at 155 now. I’m a natural 155er. So, that’ll be a good weight class for me.”

Northcutt most recently faltered in his heavily hyped bout with fellow “Looking For A Fight” product Mickey Gall at last December’s UFC on FOX 22, a bout where “Super” Sage got fans buzzing about his in-cage trash talk online before getting dropped and choked out yet again. Northcutt lost his first 170-pound bout to late replacement Bryan Barberena, prompting a move back to lightweight for a decision win over Enrique Marin at 2016’s UFC 200.

Many were quick to slam his lack of submission defense after both fights, pointing out that he seems to tap out rather quickly and would benefit from a camp change from his scattershot approach to training in Texas to a more respected and established MMA camp. That has recently lead to the 20-year-old heading to frigid Milwaukee to train with UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley for his next bout, a move that can only help his chances to fulfill the supposedly massive potential he displayed in his first two UFC bouts.

When he does return, he knows it’s going to be at his original, more natural weight class – and he hopes it will be coming in the next few months:

“[I don’t have an] exactly a set date, but maybe sometime in the next three months, four months, and back at 155. So I’ll be learning the most I can until then, and improving.”

UFC Fight Night 103 Winner Tony Martin Felt ‘Awkward’ After Cup Broke

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocipCnn9zl8

Tony Martin was left in an unusual situation this past weekend at UFC Fight Night 103.

Martin’s cup broke during his fight on FOX Sports 1 with Alex White, leaving him with a choice to make. He figured that situation out and went on to claim a decision win, but it made for an interesting fight the rest of the way.

“It was kind of an awkward situation and I’m going through my head, ‘I don’t want to take the chance of them calling the fight off over something stupid like this,’ so we just cut off the strings and I just put it in my regular compression shorts,” Martin said (thanks to MMAjunkie for the quotes). “Obviously it wasn’t tight or anything, and it was moving around the whole time. It was just kind of an awkward situation and it threw me off. The first 30 seconds, we had the game plan of being first and landing first and it worked out perfectly, and then it all threw off my whole game.

“I blame myself. I let it mess with my game plan, and that’s what I was mostly disappointed in. But it was a 30-27 win, so you can’t be too disappointed because a win in the UFC is a big win.”

Entering the night below .500 in the UFC, Martin (11-3) knew a win was very important to even his Octagon mark at 3-3. Now, he wants to take on a bigger name in his next bout.

“If I had to throw out one name, I would say there’s one guy out there that keeps fighters that don’t belong in the UFC (in Mickey Gall),” Martin said. “He’s 3-0 and he’s fought a guy that’s never fought a mixed martial arts fight, he fought a guy that was a pro wrestler, and then he fought a guy that’s a pretty boy – he’s a nice guy, but he’s just a pretty boy. He’s not a real fighter.”

UFC On FOX 22 Delivers Big Ratings

UFC on FOX 22 had some great action and did a good rating as well. The event pulled in 3,178,000 viewers, which was the best number since the 3.2 million viewers that tuned into UFC on FOX 10 in January 2014. The last UFC on FOX event, UFC on FOX 21, drew 1,983,000 viewers. The

The event was headlined by Michelle Waterson’s first round submission win over Paige VanZant while the co-main event featured Mickey Gall finishing Sage Northcutt. Also, Urijah Faber beat Brad Pickett by decision, which was Faber’s last pro-MMA bout. It should be noted that this was the second straight televised fight for Northcutt on a show that did impressive TV ratings. His prelim fight at UFC 200 with Enrique Marin set a record for viewership on FOX Sports 2 with 582,000 viewers.

The UFC on FOX 22 prelims drew 679,000 viewers on FOX Sports 1. The post-fight show did 139,000 viewers. The UFC attempted to bring younger stars out into the spotlight for this event, and as seen by the viewership number, it worked.

MMA fans get a rare break from UFC events as the promotion is taking a weekend off for Christmas. However, they return on December 30th in a big way as former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey returns to the world famous Octagon as she challenges Amanda Nunes for the UFC women’s bantamweight title at UFC 207. The prelims for that event will air on FOX Sports 1 while the main card will air on pay-per-view (PPV).
