Duke Roufus, who trains and coaches WWE superstar-turned-mixed martial artist CM Punk, says the pro wrestler is awaiting a fight agreement.
Punk infamously signed with the UFC back in 2014, but injuries kept his octagon debut delayed until 2016, when he lost to welterweight prospect Mickey Gall at UFC 203 by first-round submission.
While no opponent has been named as of Tuesday, the 0-1 Punk, whose real name is Phil Brooks, will probably be matched up with another inexperienced fighter without the potential of his last opponent.
Roufus posted a picture on Instagram on Tuesday of Punk and fellow RoufusSport fighter John Makdessi and hinted at a UFC return for both men.
Makdessi hasn’t fought since a spectacular first-round knockout loss to Lando Venatta at UFC 206.
Onetime UFC fighter and MMA photographer Mike Jackson, who also lost to Mickey Gall in his debut, took to Twitter shortly after the news of Punk’s possible return to call the former WWE star out:
Do you expect to see CM Punk back in the cage? If he does, who would be a respectable opponent you’d like to see him fight for his second professional MMA bout?
Former WWE star CM Punk was completely dismantled in his UFC debut against the now 3-0 Mickey Gall. After the fight, UFC president Dana White said that if Punk plans to fight again, which he does, he should probably fight elsewhere. Former WWE star CM Punk was completely dismantled in his UFC debut against the now 3-0 Mickey Gall. After the fight, UFC president Dana White said that if Punk plans to fight again, which he does, he should probably fight elsewhere.
After his lackluster performance at UFC 203, Punk said that he’s very aware that he may be cut, and that if he does get cut, he’ll probably end up fighting somewhere else. As of this writing, the UFC hasn’t decided to cut the ex-WWE champ, and on a recent episode of the UFC Unfiltered podcast, Dana White said that the organization won’t be cutting Punk any time soon.
On the podcast, White said that he told Punk to go home and be normal for a while following his loss to Mickey Gall. He also told Punk that, when the time is right, they’ll get on the phone with each other to discuss what’s next.
“So what I told him to do is go home, spend some time with your wife, be normal for a little while, and we’ll get on the phone and talk. Obviously we haven’t talked yet, but we will, we’ll see what’s next.”
So, what could be next for CM Punk? Well, if he stays in the UFC, there’s only one guy out there that he could face, and have a shot at beating, and that’s Mike Jackson.
Like Punk, Jackson was also defeated by Mickey Gall via submission in the very first round. That’s not the only thing they have in common though, as both of them have a professional MMA record of 0-1.
If you watched UFC 203, then you know that it’s quite clear that Punk was in over his head when he stepped inside the Octagon with Mickey Gall, but he probably wouldn’t be in over his head if he fought Mike Jackson, because the two men are at the same level in terms of skill.

Mike Jackson is obviously a savvy guy, because he called out CM Punk on a recent edition of MMA Junkie Radio, saying that it would make sense for him to be Punk’s next UFC opponent. Will he get the fight? Well, if Punk stays in the UFC, the answer to that question is yes. But, if Punk is cut from the organization, he may end up going to Bellator, where they may put him in the cage with someone else.
Whoever ends up getting Punk will get a proven pay-per-view draw, as the former WWE star helped add an additional 150,000 buys to UFC 203.
Even though Punk is now a proven pay-per-view draw, some have speculated that the UFC, if they allow him to fight again in their organization, will put his next fight, presumably against Mike Jackson, on one of their big Fox shows.

Despite taking a beating from Mickey Gall at UFC 203 earlier this month, former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star CM Punk still wants to compete inside of the UFC’s Octagon.
Gall earned the opportunity to welcome Punk into the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) by defeating Mike ‘The Truth’ Jackson at UFC Fight Night 83 in February.
Punk and Gall met on the main card of UFC 203 earlier this month, and as many expected, Gall took the former professional wrestling star down with ease and subsequently choked him out to earn a first round submission victory.
Despite many calling for Punk to walk away after having his fun in the Octagon, ‘The Cult of Personality’ remained adamant that he isn’t done competing in the cage and wants to get back in there as soon as possible.
One man who is willing to fight Punk in his second MMA bout, is the man who had the opportunity to fight him earlier this year, Mike Jackson.
Jackson recently spoke to MMA Junkieto express his interest in being the one to step into the Octagon with Punk next:
“I’ve gotten wind that Punk wants to get another fight, and it only makes sense,” Jackson said.
“It’s about making money,” said Jackson. “I’m a businessman, so I understand the logistics of all of this. As a fight fan, I remember when I heard about (Punk fighting in MMA). I was like, ‘No, no one wants to see that.’ But people are going to tune in for the spectacle of it.”
Jackson noted that it only makes sense to matchup himself and Punk as they share similar Octagon experience, and both have a loss to Gall on their records:
“The experience is the same,” Jackson said. “We both have a loss to Mickey Gall. He can’t go in there and fight dudes with a lot of experience, as opposed to bringing in someone else with very limited MMA experience. It only makes sense to put us both in there.
“This is a fight fans wanted to see even prior to me fighting Mickey Gall because neither one of us had any fights.”
“So whatever way makes the most money for everyone involved – whether it’s the UFC, or Punk, or myself,” he said.
Jackson feels that he has accumulated a plethora of striking skills throughout his experience in boxing and kickboxing, and predicts that if he were to step into the Octagon with Punk, he’d put him away with a knockout in the second round:
“I like predicting my knockouts,” he said. “I predicted each (boxing and kickboxing) fight in each round. If I fight CM Punk, I’m knocking him out in the second round.
“I want him to understand that this is a real thing. This isn’t scripted, and your life is on the line. I want him to understand that by me punching him in the face and kicking him and elbowing him repeatedly that, you need to stop.”
How do you feel about a potential bout between Punk and Jackson?
