The high profile Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson clash has set new benchmarks, even as it faced relentless scrutiny from critics.

Last Friday, “The Problem Child” squared off against the legendary heavyweight boxer in an eight-round showdown at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The event proved to be a staggering success, boasting a record-breaking gate and reportedly becoming the most-watched combat sports spectacle of 2024.

The main event, where Paul secured a unanimous decision victory over the 58-year-old Tyson, paired with a historic co-main event that saw Katie Taylor narrowly defeat Amanda Serrano in a contentious split decision, now holds the record for the largest revenue-generating fight night outside Las Vegas in U.S. history.

As per Most Valuable Promotions, over 72,300 fans packed the arena for the Paul vs. Tyson showdown, generating a staggering $18,117,072 in total revenue. This impressive feat secured its place as the ninth-highest combat sports gate of all time and set a new benchmark as the highest-grossing event at AT&T Stadium.

On Tuesday, Netflix announced that the Paul vs. Tyson showdown attracted over 108 million viewers on the streaming platform, despite encountering significant technical disruptions. Meanwhile, the co-main event became the most-watched professional women’s sports event in U.S. history, with an average minute audience of 47 million and an estimated 74 million live viewers worldwide.

The main event reached a peak of 65 million simultaneous streams, setting a new record for the most-streamed sports event worldwide, with 38 million of those streams coming from the U.S. alone.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer repeatedly emphasized the immense draw of his showdown with the return of “Iron Mike,” especially after Netflix came on board as the exclusive streaming partner for the event.

Breaking away from the traditional pay-per-view model, the fight card was made available to Netflix subscribers at no additional cost.

Mike Tyson Issues First Statement On Jake Paul Loss: ‘I Almost Died In June’

Mike Tyson has come out with his first remarks since losing to Jake Paul in the main event of their card at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas less than 24 hours ago.

“Iron Mike” was not knocked down during the fight but was significantly slow and tired as the fight went on. The 58-year-old, who was competing in his first sanctioned professional boxing outing since 2005, lost to the younger Paul brother via unanimous decision.

That said, in his statement released on social media, the heavyweight great expressed having no regrets for entering the ring at his age.

Tyson, in fact, considered his performance a moral victory, given the circumstances of his health from this past summer. On May 31, Tyson suffered an ulcer flare up on an airplane. The former champion revealed in the statement that he almost died, having had multiple blood transfusions and losing about 25 pounds.

Mike Tyson Releases Statement Declaring Victory In Defeat

“To have my children see me stand toe to toe and finish 8 rounds with a talented fighter half my age in front of a packed Dallas Cowboy stadium is an experience that no man has the right to ask for,” Tyson said in the statement.

Tyson came out strong on the front foot in the opening round, bringing out that aggressive style he was known for over the course of his career.

But “Iron Mike” slowed from the second round on, as Paul worked him over with combinations and landed at will. Though the heavyweight legend showed defense, he had landed less than 20 punches by the time the final round came.

Paul, during the event’s post-fight press conference, said he carried the veteran when he realized midway through the fight how drained he appeared, stating he “didn’t want to hurt someone that wasn’t able to do much.”

Paul responded to Tyson’s statement, praising him for his legendary status in the sport and thanking him for the opportunity to fight.

Paul has now won five straight since his loss to Tommy Fury.

Paul has teased an announcement soon, but it is unknown what could be in hold for his next fight.

Is Francis Ngannou next for Jake Paul?

Making his 12th appearance inside the squared circle on Friday night, ‘The Problem Child’ scored the biggest win of his professional boxing career, besting former undisputed heavyweight world champion ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson inside the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Paul landed a unanimous decision victory after the 58-year-old Tyson ran out of steam halfway through the eight-round affair. Paul’s win over Tyson generated a whole host of reactions from fighters, including KSI, Terence Crawford, and Conor McGregor.

Also included on that list was Ngannou, who expressed his desire to slap up ‘El Gallo’ the next time they run into one another.

“Next time I see this Jake Paul guy I’m gonna give him 2 or 3 slaps,” Ngannou wrote on X.

Paul and Ngannou are both under contract with the PFL making their pairing a real possibility. Unfortunately, Paul isn’t usually interested in fighting opponents he doesn’t have a size, age, or experience advantage over.

Jake Paul is tired of hearing excuses

Paul’s career has been mostly made of fighting past-their-prime athletes and his fight with Tyson was no different. Still, ‘The Problem Child’ has acquiesced to the fact that no matter who he defeats, there will always be people quick to write-off his success.

“I tried to give the best fight I possibly could, but when someone’s just surviving in the ring, basically it’s hard to make it exciting,” Paul said during the post-fight press conference. “So I couldn’t really get him to engage me or slip shots and do something super cool or whatever, but I don’t care about what people have to say. They’re always going to have something to say and that it is what it is” (h/t Bloody Elbow).

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson was a massive hit for Netflix. Unfortunately, a lot of fight fans weren’t able to watch the event.

Friday’s event at the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium was a smashing success by all accounts. The event drew more than 70,000 spectators and generated more than 120 million viewers on the popular streaming site.

Netflix

Sadly, a lot of people were left following along with the fight on social media after Netflix crashed more than an hour before the big fight went down.

“This is the biggest event,” Paul said on the success of the bout. “Over 120 million people on Netflix. We crashed the site.”

According to DownDetector, roughly 90,000 viewers reported outages in the hour leading up to Paul vs. Tyson.

Netflix streaming struggles doesn’t bode well for his impending partnership with the NFL and WWE

Users on X, Facebook, and pretty much every other major social media platform shared images of their frozen connections, many of which were stuck on a 25% loading screen. The evening was also marred with technical issues during the live broadcast, the most egregious being an incident where Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ microphone didn’t work while he was speaking with analysts.

A similar situation occurred when legendary pugilist Evander Holyfield joined the panel but couldn’t hear anything that was being said. Roy Jones Jr. had to repeatedly lean over and well questions into Holyfield’s ear.

Netflix has not yet commented on the issue, but the streaming fail doesn’t bode well for the Christmas day when the streaming giant is scheduled to host two live NFL games. Netflix will also be the new home of WWE Raw beginning January 6.

Hopefully, Netflix can work out the kinks before then.
