Heavyweight boxing great Mike Tyson believes MMA fighters will never earn the same amount of money boxers do.

The one-time champion enjoyed a lucrative career in boxing earning $400 million in the ring and amassed a total net worth of $685 million (per Forbes).

Tyson is not the only fighter to make big money in boxing. Countless boxing stars have gone on to make tens of millions in the sport, something which is rarely seen in MMA and the 53-year-old doesn’t see that changing anytime soon.

Speaking to Brant James he says having more views MMA fighters will never earn the same money and he doesn’t understand why.

“MMA will always have more views and stuff than boxing, but boxers will always make more money than MMA fighters,”

“[Why that is,] That’s tricky, it doesn’t make any sense,” he added.

“I don’t know, they don’t make enough money in my perspective. It’s exciting and sexy, but [UFC fighters] don’t make enough money.” (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)

Despite MMA being generally low paying in comparison to boxing, the sport does have a few exceptions. Conor McGregor is the most obvious example of this. The Irishman has managed to capitalise on his popularity to create immense wealth as an MMA fighter. Outside of the sport he has several successful businesses and has competed in a lucrative boxing fight.

Other success stories can be seen in fighters such as Khabib Nurmagomedov, Nate Diaz, Ronda Rousey, Brock Lesnar, and Georges St Pierre. However, these are exceptions to the rule and Tyson is right MMA fighters are grossly underpaid for their level of talent and the risks they take when competing.

A recent report revealed the UFC pays fighters 16 percent of its $900 million revenue. In comparison, the MLB, NBA, and NFL all payout between 48-50 percent of all revenue to the athletes.

Do you agree with Mike Tyson? Will boxers always earn more than MMA fighters?

Despite his many successful ventures outside of boxing, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson still feels a void in his life without the sweet science.

Tyson is the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history and was regarded by many in the combat sports world as arguably the most intimidating fighter of all time during his pomp.

In fact, Tyson was so intimidating that he himself is scared of the fighter that he once was until he ultimately retired in 2005. Now 53, an emotional “Iron Mike” reflected on life without boxing and his past self in a recent episode of his Hotboxin’ podcast with Sugar Ray Leonard as a guest:

“I know the art of fight, I know the art of war, that’s all I ever studied,” Tyson said. “That’s why I’m so feared, that’s why they feared me when I was in the ring, I was an annihilator. It’s all I was born for. Now those days are gone. It’s empty, I’m nothing.

“I’m working on the art of humbleness. That’s the reason why I’m crying cause I’m not that person no more and I miss him. Because sometimes I feel like a b*tch, because I don’t want that person to come out because if he comes out, hell is coming with him.

“And it’s not funny, I’m not trying to sound cool like a tough guy. It’s just I hate that guy. I’m scared of him.”

Deontay Wilder

Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder will again put his WBC title on the line when he faces Tyson Fury this weekend. On February 22 these two fighters will face off in one of the most eagerly anticipated rematches in recent years. It’ll go down at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada in front of a sold out crowd and millions watching around the world.

The two men previously
fought in December 2018, with the fight ending in a controversial draw. Englishman
Fury out boxed his opponent for most of the fight. However, Wilder scored two
knockdowns in the later rounds to swing it back in his favour.

As part of the
fight week build up, BT Sport have put together an epic promotional video which
sees heavyweight great Mike Tyson hype up the fight.

In the video Tyson recites lines about the previous fight and what’s to come. All whilst footage and voice overs of both fighters play in the background. No explanation can do this video justice, so watch it below and get hyped for the biggest fight of 2020.

The former champion himself has made no secret about who he’ll be rooting for on Saturday night. Speaking to BT Sport he admitted his bias towards the Englishman due to Fury having been named in his honour, he said.

“I always root for
him because he was named after me. That’s the natural thing to do, right? I’m
biased towards him…

“I don’t care how hard you punch, it’s
hard to beat somebody who doesn’t wanna quit…

“It’s gonna be a really, really
interesting fight and both guys have something to prove. I just wish the best
for Tyson Fury, I’m always a Tyson fan.”

think will win this heavyweight rematch between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury?

UFC veteran Diego Sanchez appeared to have ended his long association with the company earlier this year. When his contract expired, he left the UFC to explore other options. After considering moves to ONE FC and Bare-Knuckle boing, he ultimately resigned with UFC which has been his home since 2005.

“The Nightmare” snapped a two-fight win streak last time out when he fought Michael Chiesa. He’ll look to get back to winning ways against flamboyant striker Michel Pereira at UFC Rio Rancho in February. Whilst speaking about the fight to Ariel Helwani he revealed he is in need of a cornerman and is hoping to bring Mike Tyson on board. (H/T Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show)

“Shout out to Mike Tyson right now.
If you want to work my corner in the next fight, I would love to have the
legend Mike Tyson in the corner. If you ain’t doing anything Feb. 15, OG Diego
Sanchez needs a cornerman.”

At 37-years-old and with 41 fights to
his name, you’d think this would be his final contract as a fighter. However, Sanchez
refuses to put a timescale on his retirement and insists he takes life one day
at a time.

“I’m taking life one day at a time,
living it moment for moment, appreciating every single human being that comes
in my path. I’ll go from there. Sanchez said.

“I have everything I need, I’m well taken care of, set for life, and so I’m doing this for the passion of the platform. I’m going to do these last five fights in the UFC and go from there. It’s going to be two years from now, we’ll see where I’m at. I’m going to be 40 years old. If it’s time to hang it up, it’s time to hang it up.”

Will Mike Tyson take the call and be in Diego Sanchez’s corner?
