See how Mark Hunt perfectly set up another one of his vintage knockouts…

UFC heavyweight veteran Mark Hunt did it again, this time the victim of his trademark walk off knockout was fellow mixed martial arts legend Frank Mir. The two faced off in the main event of UFC Fight Night 85 in Brisbane, Australia last night (Saturday March 19, 2016), and it went down exactly how many of us had predicted. It only took one punch from Hunt to end the fight, as the former K-1 champion and Pride FC striker put the screws to the former UFC heavyweight champion with a catastrophic overhand right.

For Frank Mir, it was really just another example f why he should retire. In frustrating but not uncommon fashion, the world renowned grappling wizard tested his stand up against the much more accomplished puncher. Where Shane Carwin, Junior dos Santos and many others have also succeeded, ‘The Super Samoan’ finished it half way through the first round, but it wasn’t just a wild punch.

So let’s break down exactly what happened. A seasoned striker like Mark Hunt, with his brutal fight finishing power, is always going to be an extremely dangerous opponent. But, as famed boxing trainer Teddy Atlas once said, you need to have the right missile to get that bomb to it’s location. What he’s saying is that power is great, but if you can’t land it, you won’t be able to utilize it in a fight. To be able to get that power to it’s desired place, in the case of Hunt vs. Mir that’s the head, there are a number of options for the offensive striker; You can use feints, footwork, head movement, combination punching that ends in the big bomb, countering, using your opponent’s movement, throwing unusual strikes or a combination of these techniques. For all these methods, timing is key.

In the case of Hunt, as we’ve seen in many fights during his illustrious career, he used a combination of feints and his opponents reactions to them in order to land his fight finishing bomb with some added movement of his own and of course split second and precise timing.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir will tie Tito Ortiz’s record for most fights for the promotion in Brisbane, Australia tonight (Saturday March 19, 2016). He takes on fellow legend of the sport Mark Hunt in the UFC Fight Night 85 main event, in a bout that will prove telling as to where either man’s career will be headed at this twilight stage. It will be Mir’s 27th fight in 15 years, having fought outside the Zuffa banner only twice during that time (his first two fights).

It was a different world when Mir took up professional fighting in 2001, as the Japanese MMA scene was flourishing, and the UFC hadn’t wuite found it’s feet yet. Pride FC was where all the best talent was, and among those superstars, heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko shined the brightest.

For years fans pondered and salivated the prospect of Emelianenko testing his mettle against the UFC elite, but it never came to be. ‘The Last Emperor’ tested the American waters with a brief stint in Scott Coker’s Strikeforce, but went 1-3 after getting finished by Antonio Silva, Dan Henderson and current UFC heavyweight champ Fabricio Werdum. A few meaningless fights overseas preceded Emelianenko’s eventual retirement, albeit a temporary sit, as he returned on New Year’s eve last year to defeat the poorest calibre tomato can possible in Jaideep Singh.

Talking with MMAJunkie.com, Mir says that Fedor’s losses, especially to ‘Bigfoot’ Silva, showed how he would’ve got on in the UFC:

The guy asked what kind of shape Mark Hunt was in, Hunt’s reaction is priceless…

Former K-1 world grand prix champion, Pride FC veteran and current UFC heavyweight contender Mark Hunt is perhaps the most likeable character in modern mixed martial arts. ‘The Super Samoan’ doesn’t just have a fan friendly style with his one punch walk off knockouts, he’s also one of the humblest men you’ll ever come across in the fight game. He meets former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir at this weekend’s stacked UFC Fight Night 85 card, and does so in front of a crowd that will be heavily on the New Zealander’s side.

In Mir, Hunt faces an accomplished and highly dangerous grappler who can also strike with significant knockout power, but the one shot ability of ‘The Super Samoan’ has seen him create highlight reels of many dangerous men over the years. One question that is ever hovering when Hunt is concerned is the shape he’s in. Against Stipe Miocic and Fabricio Werdum we saw the popular kickboxer go down in horrific losses, these defeats also displayed possibly the worst shape the heavyweight striker has appeared in during his UFC run.

Hunt vs. Silva

Over the recent months we’ve seen numerous pictures of Hunt training in Thailand with the likes of John Wayne Parr, and his physique, although covered by tees and vests, has looked far more trim and muscular. Now, during an interview with our good friends down under Submission Radio, ‘The Super Samoan’ finally reveals what shape he’s in for tomorrow’s (Saturday March 19) bout against Frank Mir. Check it out, the stripping begins at around the 4:00 mark:

It’s another UFC fight weekend here at LowKickMMA.com, meaning it’s weigh-ins day once again. UFC Fight Night 85 is the meal on offer in Brisbane, Australia, and it’s chock full of appetising bouts for this Saturday March 19. At the top of the card is a meeting of heavyweight legends, as ex-UFC champion takes on K-1 king and Pride FC fan favorite Mark Hunt. The two have quite contrasting styles, but are also very similar in their recent records. Some brutal losses but also incredible wins are the back stories of both men’s entire career in all honesty, and it’s going to be fun to see how they approach this fight in the late stages of their respective careers.

In the co-main event we have a battle between Neil Magny and Hector Lombard at welterweight. After serving a suspension for being busted by USADA with some designer steroids in his system, ‘Lightning’ will look to bounce back in the stacked 170-pound division. The only problem with that statement of intent is that Magny is a much taller welterweight, and he’s looked like a stone cold killer in his recent form. Winning nine of his last 10 bouts, Magny will face a power punching athlete who, until 2011, hadn’t lost a fight in five years.

Elsewhere on the card we have a number of exciting matches featuring plenty of hot prospects from some of the most exciting current crop. Check in with us at 630 PM ET for the live weigh ins for UFC Fight Night 85, or see the updated results after the fact.
