Another day, another fighter flagged for a potential violation of the UFC’s new and increased drug testing program led by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

Word came tonight (Fri., April 8, 2015) that two-time former UFC heavyweight Frank Mir was notified of a potential anti-doping violation stemming from his knockout loss to Mark Hunt i the main event of UFC Fight Night 85 on March 20, 2016 from Brisbane, Australia.

The UFC released the following statement via its website:

The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Frank Mir of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an in-competition sample collected the day of his fight on March 20, 2016 in Brisbane, Australia.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Mir. It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair legal process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed.

Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.

Exactly which banned substance Mir potentially tested positive for has not been made public at this time. He will of course have an opportunity to appeal the violation and any subsequent punishment.

If he does receive a lengthy suspension, however, it could spell the end of an extremely decorated run for Mir, who has lost six out of his last eight UFC fights after ‘The Super Samoan’ knocked him out in the first round in Brisbane. Mir had previously lost four straight in early 2014, but rebounded after a yearlong layoff to top Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Todd Duffee to resurrect his career.

Two consecutive losses and the potential violation have seemingly put at least a temporary halt to that. If Mir does indeed decide to hang up his gloves, he’ll retire as arguably the most decorated heavyweight in UFC history, owning the division records for most wins, most fights, and most finishes.

Mark Hunt Wants A Big Fight Against Top Five Opponent

After scoring back to back first round knockout victories over the likes of Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Frank Mir, legendary heavyweight striker Mark “The Super Samoan” Hunt has his eyes set on a big time fight: “Any of them is fine,” Hunt said Monday on The MMA Hour. “Any of the top-five guys would be fine.” Despite

After scoring back to back first round knockout victories over the likes of Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Frank Mir, legendary heavyweight striker Mark “The Super Samoan” Hunt has his eyes set on a big time fight:

“Any of them is fine,” Hunt said Monday on The MMA Hour. “Any of the top-five guys would be fine.”

Despite being 41 years of age, Hunt proved that he still has some pop left in his hands, scoring another of his patented walk off knockouts just last week (March 19, 2016) over the former champion in Mir.

The heavyweight division is almost completely booked up at this time in terms of top contenders which could be a problem for Hunt, as “The Super Samoan” is looking to get right back into the thick of things.

Perhaps a marquee matchup at this summer’s UFC 200 would fit the bill, but Hunt also said that he’d be ready to step in on short notice if any heavyweight bouts were to fall apart:

“If someone pulls out, I’d rather fight sooner,” Hunt said. “So if someone pulls out, I’m your man. Give me a call.”

Despite his recent run of success over the last few years inside of the Octagon, Hunt has suffered a few crucial defeats, all coming at the hands of some of the best heavyweights in the world including reigning champion Fabricio Werdum, current title challenger Stipe Miocic, and former divisional kingpin Junior dos Santos.

“The Super Samoan” has never lost in a rematch, and would happily accept a bout with any of those men. In fact, he even admitted that his loss to Miocic taught him a dire lesson regarding fight preparation:

“I want my rematch with those guys,” Hunt said. “That fight with Stipe taught me a big lesson there, never to be so much over weight before the fight. It was a problem. So I won’t be doing that again.”

Who would you like to see the heavy handed Hunt take on next?

Decorated veteran and former two-time UFC champion Frank Mir was knocked out by Mark Hunt in the main event of last night’s (March, 19, 2016) UFC Fight Night 85 from the Brisbane Entertainment Center in Brisbane, Australia, and the stoppage loss has justifiably called the 36-year-old legend’s UFC career into serious question.

Mir has most certainly been one of the most accomplished heavyweights in UFC history, holding the record for most bouts in the weight class while transcending three UFC eras over an illustrious career that has lasted almost an unprecedented 15 years. But his latest knockout loss to Hunt was Mir’s sixth loss in his last eight bouts, and his eighth overall knockout loss to the best heavyweights in the world.

It’s left the mixed martial arts community discussing whether or not Mir should retire to take a job in the UFC and take his much-deserved spot in the UFC Hall of Fame. The lethal Brazilian jiu-jitsu practicioner simply doesn’t have anything left to prove in MMA, even in a division as shallow as the UFC heavyweight landscape, but obviously the competitive fires are hard to put out for a fighter of Mir’s caliber and resume.

What do you think? Should Mir retire, or should he fight again?

Legendary striker Mark “The Super Samoan” Hunt pulled of another one of his infamous walk off knockouts last night (March 19, 2016), blasting Frank Mir in the first round of their UFC Fight Night 85 headliner.

While some may argue that the stoppage was somewhat early, Hunt confirmed after the bout that Mir was out cold, resulting in no need for extra shots:

“Frank, he was still in the dark lands when I saw him [after landing the punch],” Hunt said during the post-fight press conference. “His face was still…he wasn’t there, so I just left it. He wasn’t there. He was out, somewhere else.”

Hunt’s assessment of the fight was taken a bit lightly, as his statements resulted in a bit laughter. Despite the laughter, however, “The Super Samoan” reiterated his thinking, saying that the former heavyweight champion was “blacked out”:

“Well, it’s true,” Hunt continued. “He wasn’t there. He was blacked out.”

Hunt currently sits at No. 9 in the heavyweight rankings, and it appears as if he has eyes set on a revenge tour. Speaking on his future, “The Super Samoan” admitted that he’d be interested in rematches with some of the division’s elite:

“I’d fight any of the top guys,” Hunt said. “I could rematch any of those guys – JDS, Stipe, the guy with the belt…Fabricio…I’ve never lost a rematch, so I’d like to rematch any one of those guys.”

See how Mark Hunt perfectly set up another one of his vintage knockouts…

UFC heavyweight veteran Mark Hunt did it again, this time the victim of his trademark walk off knockout was fellow mixed martial arts legend Frank Mir. The two faced off in the main event of UFC Fight Night 85 in Brisbane, Australia last night (Saturday March 19, 2016), and it went down exactly how many of us had predicted. It only took one punch from Hunt to end the fight, as the former K-1 champion and Pride FC striker put the screws to the former UFC heavyweight champion with a catastrophic overhand right.

For Frank Mir, it was really just another example f why he should retire. In frustrating but not uncommon fashion, the world renowned grappling wizard tested his stand up against the much more accomplished puncher. Where Shane Carwin, Junior dos Santos and many others have also succeeded, ‘The Super Samoan’ finished it half way through the first round, but it wasn’t just a wild punch.

So let’s break down exactly what happened. A seasoned striker like Mark Hunt, with his brutal fight finishing power, is always going to be an extremely dangerous opponent. But, as famed boxing trainer Teddy Atlas once said, you need to have the right missile to get that bomb to it’s location. What he’s saying is that power is great, but if you can’t land it, you won’t be able to utilize it in a fight. To be able to get that power to it’s desired place, in the case of Hunt vs. Mir that’s the head, there are a number of options for the offensive striker; You can use feints, footwork, head movement, combination punching that ends in the big bomb, countering, using your opponent’s movement, throwing unusual strikes or a combination of these techniques. For all these methods, timing is key.

In the case of Hunt, as we’ve seen in many fights during his illustrious career, he used a combination of feints and his opponents reactions to them in order to land his fight finishing bomb with some added movement of his own and of course split second and precise timing.

It may not have had the hype and attention of March 5’s UFC 196, but last night’s (March, 19, 2016) UFC Fight Night 85 from the Brisbane Entertainment Center in Brisbane, Australia, was undoubtedly a scintillating card that provided a diverse mix of action-packed entertainment for fans Down Under.

The fighters who contributed most to the successful night were warded with a traditional post-fight bonus, and not surprisingly, heavyweight fan favorite Mark Hunt earned the first $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his first-round walkoff knockout of former champion Frank Mir. With his latest post-fight bonus, Hunt tied Roy Nelson and Travis Browne for the most in UFC heavyweight history with six.

The second “Performance of the Night” very deservedly went to Neil Magny, who weathered an early storm from Hector Lombard to win their co-main event bout with an absolutely vicious second and third-round swarm on the once-hyped champion.

Finally, “Fight of the Night” went to lightweight prospects Jake Matthews and Johnny Case for their back-and-forth battle that the 21-year-ld Matthews own with an emphatic rear-naked choke in front of his hometown Australian crowd, marking a clean sweep of the bonuses for the top three bouts on the main card.
