CagePotato Presents: The Unofficial ‘UFC Coloring Book’ Art Contest!

(Click for larger version.)

Masato Toys recently put out an incredible (but unfortunately fake) UFC coloring book, featuring kid-friendly mazes, chest-less ring girls, and classic moments from UFC’s past. One page caught our eye in particular: The above image of Alan Belcher without his famous(ly ugly) Johnny Cash tattoo.

There’s a lot of space to cover on that arm, and we’d love to see how you’d fill it. Using Photoshop, MS Paint, or a printer and actual crayons, please draw a new tattoo for Alan onto the image and send the resulting work to BG at [email protected].

A week from today, we’ll pick our three favorites who will win…well, we’re not sure yet. Maybe some CagePotato shirts if we still have some left. Maybe just some shout-outs on Twitter. Maybe nothing. That’s what makes this contest “unofficial.” Take it or leave it. Good luck everybody, and follow Masato Toys on Facebook right here.

Ian McCall vs. Brad Pickett, Gunnar Nelson vs. Omari Akhmedov Added to UFC Fight Night 37 in London

(Clad in a ragged fedora and suspenders, ‘One Punch’ is the first sub-boss you encounter in the “England” level of Super UFC Bros. / Image via @MleegArt)

After pulling out of this weekend’s UFC on FOX 9 card due to injury, Ian McCall has been reassigned to UFC Fight Night 37: Gustafsson vs. Manuwa, March 8th at the O2 Arena in London. “Uncle Creepy” will face off against Brad “One Punch” Pickett, who is dropping to flyweight for the first time following a 3-3 UFC stint at bantamweight. The UFC confirmed the booking yesterday.

Though Pickett was never able to put together a long winning streak in the Octagon, his fan-friendly style has earned him four Fight of the Night bonuses and one Knockout of the Night bonus since 2011, totaling $270,000 in extra cash. His last appearance resulted in a triangle-choke loss to Michael McDonald, in a bout that won the FOTN award for UFC Fight Night 26: Shogun vs. Sonnen. Of course, McCall is no slouch himself when it comes to bonuses, with two Fight of the Night bumps in his four UFC appearances. So yeah, should be fun.

Also on the card…

Also on the card…

11-0 grappling wizard Gunnar Nelson — who hasn’t competed since February due to an injury and a car accident — will finally return to action at UFC Fight Night 37 against dangerous Dagestani (aren’t they all?) Omari Akhmedov, who picked up his 11th consecutive first-round stoppage win last month by knocking out Thiago Perpetuo at UFC Fight Night 32: Belfort vs. Henderson. The fight marked Akhmedov’s Octagon debut, and earned him and Perpetuo the event’s Fight of the Night award.

Once thought to be a serious threat in the welterweight division, Nelson’s long injury layoff and Akhmedov’s tendency to destroy people could make this a tough one for the emotionless Icelander. Your predictions, please.

Gallery: 20 Incredible Works of MMA Fan Art

(Tom Lawlor by Flaskpost.)

We’ve seen some bad, bad MMA fan art in our time. (Like, really bad.) So it came as a relief when we recently stumbled upon MMAFanMade, a tumblr account that showcases the best MMA-themed art and artists on the Internet. We decided to cherry-pick some of the site’s highlights, mix in a few old classics, and put ’em all together in the gallery after the jump. Check it out below, and if you’ve done any MMA-themed artwork yourself, please share links in the comments section. We promise that our criticism will be mostly constructive.

More MMA Art That Doesn’t Suck

He really manages to capture almost *all* of Diego’s crazy. And bodily fluid. ArtProps: “Reflex” by Jorg R. Dubin

We’ve shared before with you our opinion on the state of artwork involving MMA, and we’ve showcased everything from scribblings to a double handful of caricatures by some guy on the internet, to a gallery exhibition by a “serious artist” featuring MMA fighters.

(You can tell he’s a serious artist because he has boobies in his paintings he’s examining sports combat themes and how they relate to the struggles in the lives of the average joe. Or something like that — look, he paints on linen and people pay 15 grand for his work, guy must be legit, right?)

We’re pleased to pass along the report that MMA-themed artwork continues to flourish, as evidenced by the increasing level of skill and creativity put into some of our favorites. Check out the updated collection of MMA Artwork That Doesn’t Suck after the jump.

MMA Undercurrent Series

We stumbled onto Erena Shimoda’s photography completely by accident, and were blown away. Shimoda’s signature underwater photography simultaneously slows the action of MMA and smooths the rough edges of violence from the technique being displayed. We don’t really know what it means, but it’s beautiful.

Art of the Dojo

Perhaps not quite so “high art”, portraiture is one of the most easily enjoyed art forms, since we all enjoy a pretty face.  Of course, if you can make a mug like Sakuraba’s aesthetically pleasing, you have our attention. Much respect to Mr Smith for these kinetically-charged portraits; you can check out MOAR of his work at his website.

We feel just awful that we don’t do this every week, but you guys deserve some CagePotato t-shirts for all the hard work you’ve been putting in lately. The first honoree is Brooklyn-based artist Patrick Francisco, who e-mailed us some MMA-themed highlights from his body of work, including the above interpretation of Chuck Liddell painted onto a vinyl toy. We thought it was worth sharing, so thanks Patrick.

As for the rest of the winners, we’ll just pick a few of the recent comments about how boring Jake Shields is. (Ed. Note: CagePotato.com doesn’t necessarily agree that Jake Shields is a boring fighter, but we can appreciate a good one-liner.) Here we go…
