UFC Fan Art of the Day: Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler, Brawlin’ Buddies

Gian Galang is a New York-based illustrator who caught our attention this year with his amazing tributes to Mark Hunt. (See here and here. Step your game up, Hassy.) Galang recently created this beautiful rendition of Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler, in honor of their UFC 181 rematch this Saturday. I love how it captures the sheer joy these two get out of smashing each other. Their grins are contagious. And honestly, how much better is this than UFC 181’s official comic-book poster?

For further viewing, check out Galang’s kick-ass tribute to Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson, in advance of her atomweight title defense against Herica Tiburcio at Invicta FC 10 this Friday. You can see that one after the jump. And if you want to buy some of Galang’s work, click here.

“Adventures in Ronda Rousey Land” Is The Weirdest/Greatest Fanboy Video of All Time

(I’m just sayin’, Whatever this is > Those “Step Into Our World” posters.)

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about MMA fan art over the years, it’s that more often than not, it takes a turn for the captivating, the hilariously awful, or the just plain creepy. Though no two pieces of MMA art are the same, at the root of them all is usually a highly disturbed, manically-depressed individual crying out for help and/or a pack of UFC trading cards.

Today’s entry, however, is something of an entirely new breed. It’s what some would call “avant-garde”; combining equal parts Transformers cartoon and Tim and Eric sketch with some of the most proficient Microsoft Paint skills ever put on display. It’s goddamn glorious to be completely frank. Tweeted out by Eddie Bravo yesterday, “Adventures in Ronda Rousey Land” is one of the most brilliantly-retarded things you or I will ever see, so do yourself a favor and check it out after the jump.

I *cannot* stop watching this, you guys.

As luck would have it, “Adventures in Ronda Rousey Land” is just one of many hilarious/disturbing MMA-Themed videos created by Youtube user Flying Eye Angle. Head over to their Youtube page to check out such soon-to-be classics as “Erik Paulson’s Super Secret Secrets To Finishing Fights Revealed” and “How To Make Jiu Jitsu Work On Television” (slightly NSFW).

If someone could also point me in the direction that those Rondaswords are being sold at, that would be great.

“If Baby Boy Born, Name Hassy”: A Disturbing Pictorial of Mark Hunt’s Craziest Superfan

Us MMA fans are a weird obsessive dedicated bunch. If we’re not inciting a mob outside Cecil Peoples’ home one day, we’re probably penning heartfelt, fanboyish letters to Fedor Emelianenko the next. Maybe it’s because fighting is a much more personal, individually-focused sport than say, professional football or basketball, but the lengths at which MMA fans will go to snap a photo with, or score an autograph from, or get retweeted by their favorite fighter have become increasingly mind-boggling (creepy) as the sport has progressed.

That being said, we’re pretty sure that *nothing* any MMA fan has ever done for their favorite fighter compares to Hassy, Mark Hunt‘s biggest and therefore creepiest fan. Although not much is known about this super-obsessed “Super Samoan” fan, MiddleEasy (via Sherdog) recently unearthed a collection of illustrations Hassy has sent to Hunt over the years. They are as eerie as they are oddly inspiring, and lucky for you, we’ve compiled Hassy’s best work in the above gallery. Check it out, then try to decipher the following message Hassy posted to Hunt’s Facebook:

Introducing the Roots of Fight/Black House MMA Fan Art Contest!

(Props: YouTube.com/RootsofFight. For further viewing, check out Bas Rutten’s ground-fighting epiphanyinspirational words from Mike Tyson, and George Chuvalo’s Muhammad Ali memories.)

Our good friends at Roots of Fight have previously hooked us up with their Gracie-themed apparel, and now they’re releasing a limited-edition collection that pays tribute to the shadowy MMA brotherhood known as Black House. Check out the video above to learn about the origins and guiding principles of the Black House gym, which has hosted such MMA stars as Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, the Nogueira brothers, Rafael Cavalcante, Mark Munoz, Roger Gracie, and Glover Teixeira.

The new Black House X Roots of Fight series includes a t-shirt and sweatshirt that showcase Black House’s unique logo, which was created by legendary illustrator/designer Shepard Fairey. (Check out images of the gear after the jump.) And it just so happens that we have three prize packages to give away, which include both items. If you want them, they’re yours for the taking — all you have to do is create a piece of art paying tribute to any of the fighters in the Black House stable, or the camp itself. And it has to be really freakin’ cool…
