Video: Amir Kahn, MMA Fighter With Tourette’s Syndrome, Scores TKO Win in Pro Debut at ONE FC 20

A 20-year-old featherweight from Singapore named Amir Khan scored an impressive win in his professional debut earlier today, when he TKO’d Malaysian journeyman Jian Kai Chee midway through the first round of their fight at at ONE FC 20. And while we don’t usually report on obscure international fights, Khan is special: He suffers from Tourette’s syndrome, as evidenced by a prominent tic in which he frequently turns his face to the side, and appears to be vocalizing through the fight.

What’s interesting to me is how Khan doesn’t display the tic whenever he’s storming on Chee with strikes. It kind of reminded me of that scene in The King’s Speech where King George VI realizes that he doesn’t stammer while cursing. (Hot take: Punching people cures Tourette’s.) Anyway, I thought it was worth sharing.

Hot Fighter Alert: Road FC Ring Girl Song Ga Yeon Wins MMA Debut via First-Round TKO [VIDEO]

Props to Reddit MMA for informing us that former Road FC ring girl Song Ga Yeon (aka Ga Yeon Song, aka songkayeoun) won her MMA debut last month, TKO’ing Emi Yamamoto in the first round of their headlining match at Road FC 17 in Seoul. Song is a 19-year-old atomweight from Gumi, South Korea, who is semi-famous in her home country for appearing on the Big Brother-style reality show Roommate.

Surprisingly, Song’s MMA debut wasn’t just a stunt to sell tickets; this girl can actually bang. Watch the video below to see her come out like a swarm of bees against Yamamoto, mixing aggressive strikes and a serviceable takedown game before ending the fight with ground-and-pound at the video’s 6:25 mark. Impressive.

Knockout of the Day: Amanda Bell Smokes ‘Horsewoman’ Marina Shafir at ‘Chaos at the Casino 5?

With six consecutive first-round submission victories to her name in amateur and pro competition (five via armbar), featherweight prospect Marina Shafir was expected to cruise through Amanda Bell during their match at Chaos at the Casino 5, Sunday night in Inglewood, California. Instead, the fight turned out to be the latest blow for Ronda Rousey‘s “Four Horsewomen” stable, as Bell knocked Shaffir out in just 37 seconds. Video of the finish is above.

Bell came into the fight with a pro record of 1-2, but had previously TKO’d Jessamyn Duke during an amateur bout in 2011, making her the only fighter to hold wins over two of the Horsewomen. (Is that an impressive stat? Not really. But Bethe Correia has the opportunity to match it when she faces Shayna Baszler at UFC 177 on August 30th.) Anyway…

Here’s a bunch of photos of Ronda Rousey and Marina Shafir hanging out together.

Throwback Thursday: 15 Brutal IVC Fights That You Probably Haven’t Seen Before

(Gary Goodridge submits Augusto Menezes Santos with a reverse full-nelson at IVC 1, 7/6/97. Classic Big Daddy.)

Since our Throwback Thursday series is focusing on the ’90s this month, we decided to look back at an important (but mostly forgotten) promotion that was running no-holds-barred fights back then — the International Vale Tudo Championship.

Launched in Brazil in 1997, the IVC was like a grittier, nastier version of the UFC, featuring legal head-butts and groin-strikes, 30-minute marathon brawls, and a ring instead of a cage. It was old-school and ugly, just the way we liked it.

And now, through the magic of YouTube, it’s time to revisit those days. Here are 15 of our all-time favorite fights from the IVC’s first ten events, in loose chronological order. Enjoy.

(Dan Severn defeats Ebenezer Fontes Braga via doctor’s stoppage TKO at IVC 1.)

(Gary Goodridge submits Pedro Otavio via strikes in the IVC 1 final, after 16 minutes of creative groin abuse.)

(Wallid Ismail submits Johil de Oliveira via punches at IVC 3, 12/10/97.)

(Mike Van Arsdale runs through Francisco Nonato, Marcelo Barbosa, and Dario Amorim at IVC 4, 2/7/98.)

(Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons submits Milton Bahia via punches in the finals of IVC 5, 4/26/98. Landi-Jons had already fought for over 21 minutes that night, scoring doctor’s stoppage TKOs against Gerald Taylor and Jorge Pereira.)

(Chuck Liddell‘s epic 30-minute battle against Landi-Jons at IVC 6, 8/23/98.)

(Wanderlei Silva knocks out Mike Van Arsdale at IVC 6.)

(Renato Sobral KO’s Fernando “Bosco” Cerchiari at IVC 8, 1/20/99.)

Jeff ‘Karmaatemycat’ Watts Scored a First-Round Submission at Cage Titans 19, And We Finally Have a Video to Show You

(“From parts unknown.” Gotta love this dude.)

After a long injury-related hiatus, our dear friend Jeff Watts — aka Karmaatemycat — was back in the cage last month at Cage Titans FC 19 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where he submitted Max Barrett with a triangle-armbar, midway through the first round of their amateur bantamweight fight.

At the video’s 1:53 mark, you will see the face of pure evil? Jeff giving CagePotato a subtle plug with a devil’s horns gesture. The fight itself starts at the 5:57 mark, and Jeff starts out in three-point troll stance, daring Barrett to enter his world. Barrett gets so flustered that he slips to the mat trying to uppercut Jeff in the face.

Though we’ve always been impressed by Karma’s rock-solid grappling game, he’s gotten even better since his last outing. Once Jeff scores a takedown and starts working his jiu-jitsu, Barrett is on borrowed time. Skip to the 7:17 mark to see Jeff yank Barrett’s left arm off of his head, and immediately transition to an armbar attempt. For a moment (around 8:26), it looks like Barrett succeeds in escaping the armbar, but Jeff only tightens the noose, and now Barrett is caught in a choke as well. Checkmate.

It’s awesome to see a friend succeed — especially a big-hearted guy like Jeff who is loyal to every single person who’s helped him. Congratulations, buddy. You deserve this victory, and we can’t wait for the next one.
