("Should I use the golf analogy or the fishing analogy this time?")

New York State Assemblyman Bob Reilly made an appearance on Larry Pepe’s ProMMA Now radio show yesterday and the adamant MMA opposer finally gave a glimpse into the cause of his deep-rooted hatred of the sport.

It turns out the ancient stammering curmudgeon is a boxing fan from way back and he’s upset that MMA is eclipsing boxing in popularity.

Here’s what he had to say about his love of the sweet science (as transcribed by FightOpinion):

"I grew up being a boxing fan, alright? Muhammad Ali… in fact I go back to Rocky Marciano, but all of our great fighters…and I enjoyed it and thought it was a great sport, but today I don’t think professional boxing, as opposed to amateur boxing, professional boxing I don’t think would be legalized in many states today because of the danger to the fighters. So, I just dismiss that argument of ’safer than boxing.’ One, I don’t, you know, boxing has a much longer history, there are many more boxing matches than there are MMA matches. And it’s something, as I say and this is not entirely facetious, more people are killed fishing than in boxing, so let’s eliminate fishing. Well, no. What we do is we put in safety measures. For example, in New York state, we have rules where in certain boats you have to wear a life preserver.”

And in MMA we have stringent medical testing requirements, padded gloves, rules, ringside physicians, referees, athletic commissions and the options to tap out or to throw in the towel when a corner feels a fighter has had enough. What more do we need to do? This close-minded prick wouldn’t know a rational argument if it bit him in his ignorant, wrinkled, jaundiced ass.

Seriously. This is one of the law-making representatives of New York?

The UFC 126 Pre-Fight Press Conference took place today. When asked what the greatest fight of the decade would be, Anderson Silva said it would be himself fighting his clone. Guess, that trumps his feelings on the Vitor Belfort bout.

Due to high popularity of the Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto Vs. Demetrious Johnson fight, UFC will livestream the fight on Facebook this Saturday night from UFC 126.

Govenor Andrew Cuomo of New York state has not included the legalization of MMA in his 2011-2012 budget proposal.

Looks like Joe “Daddy” Stevenson’s last chance win or go home fight will come in the form of a bout against Danny Castillo at UFC on Versus 3.

Bellator now confirms a Lightweight Tournament Championship in March for its Season 4, in addition to its Welterweight, Featherweight, and Light Heavyweight Tournaments.

UFC held a press conference in New York City’s Madison Square Garden to announce their commitment to hold two annual UFC events in New York, once the sport is regulated in the state. Dana White and Zuffa CEO, Lorenzo Fertitta sat alongside, Jersey’s own Frankie Edgar who is the current UFC Lightweight Champion and Scott O’Neil, President of Madison Square Garden Sports to reveal their plans for New York and present an in depth economic study they’ve performed which shows the positive impact MMA events would have on the city. A press release from the UFC promotion stated:

The study found that holding two UFC events in the state (one at Madison Square Garden and one in Buffalo) will create roughly $16 million in new spending. Additionally, the study found smaller MMA operators will likely hold events that would bring an additional $4 million. In total, $23 million of annual new spending and hundreds of new jobs will be created in the local economy by regulating MMA.

Lorenzo Fertitta went on to say “We’ve done similar economic studies in major cities such as Boston, Las Vegas and Philadelphia and each showed the substantial positive impact hosting a UFC event has on the local economy. This study shows that by regulating MMA, New York can reap the economic benefits statewide.”

2010 is in the books, and MMA fans and fighters alike have endured tremendous highs and lows. Who would have guessed that The Last EmperorBrock Lesnar, BJ Penn and the WEC would all collapse this year? Who could imagine that Chael Sonnen would accuse Lance Armstrong of giving himself cancer, then test positive for a banned substance? Ironic? You bet. But enough about last year — a new decade is upon us. Here are ten predicitions that will sound ridiculous until they actually happen in 2011…

1. MMA will be sanctioned in New York.
While watching WEC bid adieu, I couldn’t help but notice the commercials for the PBR (Professional Bull Riding) at MSG (Madison Square Garden). Pro bull riding averages 1 to 2 deaths per year — that’s not including amateurs, sometimes children, participating at the county fair. Regardless of what Bob Reilly has to say, this is a no-brainer that only the likes of the M-1 management team could foul up. MMA will be sanctioned in New York in ’11, even if we have to blackmail a senator to make it happen.

2. GSP will relinquish his Welterweight title to change weight classes.
Jake Shields blah, blah, blah — Georges St. Pierre is indestructible and will wipe the floor with him, or at least dry hump him to death. With his ‘le-gacy’ secured, he can bump weight classes and test the waters in the process in becoming the best mixed martial artist from Canada with an extra ‘s’ in his name OF ALL TIME.

3. Dana White will coin a new phrase.
"You want to be a %^&@$#! fighter?" and "Never leave it in the hands of the judges." will be replaced by something catchy like "Don’t cross the boss." Oh, wait, that one’s already taken. How about "Go big or go home," or "Suns out, guns out"? I never said it would be original — just catchy.
