Rising UFC welterweight contender “Platinum” Mike Perry saw his momentum, which included nine straight knockouts to begin his career, halted when he lost a unanimous decision to Alan Jouban last year.

So Perry was looking to make a statement when he squared off with longtime veteran Jake Ellenberger in the biggest fight of his MMA career to start the main card of last night’s (Sat., April 22, 2017) UFC Fight Night 108 from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

And after some serious adversity early where “The Juggernaut” landed some big punches, kicks, and a few takedowns, “Platinum” did just that in thunderous fashion. After rocking Ellenberger with a huge left hand, Perry absolutely decimated him with a second-round standing elbow that left “The Juggernaut” flattened on the mat for several minutes as Perry did a spinning break dancing celebration in the center of the octagon.

It was a clear “Knockout of the Year” contender as one of the most vicious elbow knockouts we’ve ever seen in mixed martial arts. Watch the full fight video highlights of “Platinum’s” amazing comeback victory right here:

Last night’s unfortunate cancellation of the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Matt Mitrione main event of Bellator 172 cast a certainly unneeded mood on the MMA world, and ironically there was a fight that almost personified Bellator’s worst-case scenario.

That fight came at yesterday’s British Challenge 18 from Colchester England, where Johan Sega met Joe Harding for the amateur promotion’s featherweight championship. Like Bellator, Harding was caught showboating on his way towards what he felt was an easy win with Emelianenko’s debut. But also like Bellator, Harding had the rug pulled out from underneath him when Segas caught him with a earth-shaking high kick.

Monday Morning Video Dump: Best Non-UFC KOs of 2013, Wild Brawl at Badminton Match, Key & Peele’s Latest MMA Spoof + More

(Some New Year’s motivation from Phuket Top Team. Now go out and make something of your lives, you pansies.)

It’s the beginning of a new week, and there ain’t much going on out there in the world of MMA at the moment. Anderson Silva‘s coaches claim he’ll return to competition, but we’ve already called a ban on that sort of thing. Michael Bisping has fired the latest shot in his ongoing verbal war with Tim Kennedy, but who knows if/when that fight will actually be booked. It’s a whole lot of nothing, in other words. So why not enjoy some of these totally random videos we came across this morning, and start your Monday off with some good vibes?

Knockout of the Day: A Capoeira Cartwheel Kick KO, Just Two Weeks After the Last One

(Props: Apollo Reed via MiddleEasy)

It’s safe to say that the capoeira-style cartwheel kick has officially entered mainstream consciousness in the MMA fight game. At first, the technique only appeared in the arsenals of capoeira die-hards and crazy-ass white-people. Now, we’ve got a Morrocan welterweight rookie named Anas Siraj Mounir landing it at a UK event on Saturday, just two weeks after hot featherweight prospect Julio Cesar Neves stuck the move in Brazil. So if you’re an MMA fighter and you were thinking about trying a cartwheel kick in a fight, do it now, before everybody starts preparing for it. I’ve already said too much.

After the jump: A different angle of the kick. You’ll have to provide your own audio.

Insane Knockout Double-Feature: A Capoeira Cartwheel Kick, And the Most Savage WMMA K.O. of the Year

(Props: ZombieProphet)

So there’s this featherweight from Santa Catarina named Julio Cesar Neves, and he’s an absolute monster. In less than two years of professional competition, Neves has racked up a record of 26-0 (!), with 24 of those wins by stoppage. On Saturday, he picked up his 13th win of the year (!!), and we have a feeling this one will get him noticed by the big leagues.

The fight you see above went down at Watch Out Combat Show 28, where Neves faced Dener Dos Santos. Less than two minutes into the first round, Neves fires a capoeira-style cartwheel kick that immediately sends Dos Santos into falling-tree mode. Your move, Lelo.

And now, in the women’s division, we have a knockout that’s less flashy, more smashy…

On July 27th, atomweight prospect Jinh Yu Frey produced a strong front-runner for WMMA Knockout of the Year at Sugar Creek Showdown 18 in Hinton, Oklahoma, when she put Darla Harris to sleep in the first round. Frey stunned Harris with a hard head kick, then knocked her clean out with a brutal straight-left. As Harris began to topple over in the familiar falling-tree style, Frey fired off another straight left, helping to speed up her opponent’s descent to the mat. The win bumped Frey’s pro record to 2-0. An injury and grad school might postpone her return to the cage, but we hope to see Frey on a bigger stage in the future.

The 9 Kinds of Knockouts You See in MMA Fights

All knockouts are basically the same — a fighter gets his brain turned off and then gravity takes over. But when you’ve been watching MMA as long as we have, you begin to notice patterns. So here’s a guide to nine notable sub-species of KO, ranging from frighteningly violent to kind of hilarious. Enjoy, and let us know if we’ve left out any of your favorites…

The First-Punch Knockout

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. When you end a fight with the first punch you throw, it either means you’re a total badass, or you had a little help from your opponent. (See also: The First-Kick Knockout)

The Falling Tree Knockout

The knockout-victim stiffens up on his feet and falls to earth as slowly and deliberately as a mighty redwood. Bonus points if you can punch the guy a few more times on the way down. (See also: Barboza vs. Etim, Mercer vs. Sylvia)

To see the rest of the list — including the lawn-chair KO, the dive-bomb KO, and the cheap-shot KO — click here to continue reading this post on Break.com!
