More than any single business move the UFC has made, getting The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV was instrumental to keeping the company afloat and bringing it to a wider audience. But now the UFC-Spike partnership is coming to an end.

In a statement released just minutes before the UFC and Fox are expected to announce a new television agreement, Spike confirmed that its partnership with the UFC is coming to an end.

The Ultimate Fighter season 14 in September will be our last,” the statement says. “We are increasing our commitment to distinctive, original series that we own such as Auction Hunters and Bar Rescue, which are delivering on our goal to reach a broader audience. Our 6-year partnership with the UFC has been incredibly beneficial in building both our brands, and we wish them all the best in the future.”

Although the statement doesn’t say anything about other UFC programming, like live Fight Night shows and old fights shown on UFC Unleashed, all indications are that the UFC and Spike will be finished as a partnership after the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter wraps up.

At the time they made their partnership, the UFC and Spike were great partners, and both parties have grown significantly through the years. But now it makes more sense for both parties to go their separate ways, with the UFC focusing on its deal with Fox, and Spike focusing on shows like Auction Hunters and Bar Rescue.

The UFC may finally be getting its long-awaited, highly anticipated broadcast television deal.

Sports Business Journal is reporting that the UFC and Fox have agreed to a multi-year deal that would put as many as four events a year on the Fox network, plus Fight Night shows and The Ultimate Fighter on Fox’s sister cable channel, FX. The deal is reportedly worth $90 million a year to the UFC and will last seven or eight years.

Spike TV and Versus both have contracts with the UFC that expire at the end of 2011, and this agreement likely means neither channel will continue to do business with the UFC going forward.

The biggest question for the UFC is what kind of fight cards it will put on Fox. Getting on network TV has long been a goal of the UFC’s, and once that goal is accomplished the UFC wants to do it right, with big fights that will attract big audiences. However, the UFC’s primary source of revenue is pay-per-view, and $90 million a year from Fox isn’t enough to change that. The UFC will have to carefully balance the need to fill its network cards with big fights and the need to keep demand for pay-per-view shows high.

But if it’s done right, this can be a major step forward for the UFC, which is continuing to fight for mainstream acceptance. Network television puts the UFC in more households than ever, and will give the UFC the aura of a sport that can’t be ignored by the mainstream sports media. The Fox deal has the potential to be one of the biggest deals the UFC has ever made.

After UFC 130, Rampage Jackson Had an Embarrassing Interview

The interview you see here with the UFC’s Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and reporter Karyn Bryant from MMAHeat.com is an embarrassing exchange between a professional athlete and a credentialed member of the media — exactly the kind of thing the UFC needs to avoid if it wants to be taken seriously as a mainstream sport.

The interview starts with Bryant asking Jackson about his UFC 130 victory over Matt Hamill. And then it turns into something very different than the typical post-fight interview — and very different from anything even approaching an appropriate exchange between a journalist and a subject.

Here’s the transcript of the key portion:

Jackson: “I be loving me some black women. Are you black?”

Bryant: “Part, yeah.”

Jackson: “I love all parts of you, even the black part. What other part are you?”

Bryant: “I’m Jamaican, black and white.”

Jackson: “She’s Jamaican me horny.”

Bryant: (laughs) “I know you got to get to your party. Thank you, congratulations.”

Jackson: “She’s hot. That’s why I gave her the interview — she’s hot.”

Bryant: “Thank you, Rampage.”

Jackson: “I want to motorboat. On camera.”

With that, Jackson proceeded to stick his face in Bryant’s cleavage and pretend to “motorboat” her. To call that crossing the line would be incorrect: This behavior is so far beyond the line that Jackson wouldn’t have been able to see the line.

Bryant wrote on Twitter that she thought the incident was funny, but Bryant being OK with her encounter with Jackson doesn’t make it acceptable. Jackson and Bryant are two people in their workplaces. At your office, would it be OK if two people behaved the way Jackson and Bryant did in this interview?

Actions like this contribute to an atmosphere that can make other reporters feel uncomfortable, and it’s particularly troubling that Jackson would say, “That’s why I gave her the interview — she’s hot,” suggesting that female reporters who are credentialed to UFC events will be granted access based on whether UFC fighters find them attractive.

This isn’t the first time Jackson has acted in such a way. In 2009 he “dry humped” reporter Heather Nichols, who later said she was bothered by the way Jackson treated her. He gave a female reporter in Japan similar treatment several years ago.

Behavior like this should not be tolerated. When some players on the New York Jets made suggestive comments toward a female reporter last year — and none of those comments came close to what Jackson does in this video — the NFL was quick to act, mandating league-wide training in appropriate workplace conduct. The UFC should give similar training to its fighters.

Jackson is one of the most interesting personalities in MMA. He can be funny, gregarious, charismatic and charming. But he can also be a jerk. This interview was an example of the latter, even if it made the interviewer laugh.

Gus Johnson, the broadcaster who called the blow-by-blow on Manny Pacquiao‘s victory over Shane Mosley and who also calls Strikeforce fights on Showtime, has weighed in on the frequently discussed subject of how a boxer would do in MMA. And he doesn’t like any boxer’s chances.

In a radio interview with Dan Patrick, Johnson was asked how Pacquiao would do in an MMA fight against an MMA fighter, and Johnson said it’s ridiculous to even think Pacquiao could last.

“He’d get killed,” Johnson said of Pacquiao in the cage. “No question. Tapped out, easily. In a minute.”
