tim_sylviaFormer UFC heavyweight champion Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia (28-6) earned his fourth straight mixed martial arts victory this weekend at a CFX/Extreme Challenge 170 event in Minneapolis, Minn.

Sylvia faced Vince Lucero (19-18-1) in a super heavyweight bout as part of the shows main event. “The Maine-iac” made short work of his opponent by achieving full mount and pounding Lucero into submission in the first round. Lucero was not an opponent, on paper, that would have been a real challenge for Sylvia, as the fighter is a dismal 1-7-1 in his last nine with the lone victory coming back in April of 2008.

That makes it four in a row for Sylvia since his embarrassing loss to boxer Ray Mercer at an Adrenaline MMA event in August of 2009. His record at the time was a poor 1-4, but faced tough opponents in Randy Couture, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Fedor Emelianenko in that losing stretch.

Sylvia has fought above the 265 lbs weight limit in his last five fights, fighting at Superheavyweight four times and had the weight limit for the Powerhouse World Promotions Heavyweight Championship title extended to 275 lbs. Sylvia defeated Paul Buentello by knockout last August to win that title and looks to defend it against Pedro Rizzo this coming February.

It’s good to see “The Maine-iac” get back on track with four straight wins, but for fans hoping to see him return to the UFC it is highly unlikely to happen, well not until he can prove himself against stiff competition and is able to bring his weight down to the heavyweight limit.

Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White has been saying over the past week that Saturday’s UFC 124: St-Pierre vs. Koscheck II event would be the biggest in the promotions history.

At the post-fight press conference, White confirmed his prediction noting that a total of 23,152 fans filed into the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to watch UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre successfully defend his title against opponent Josh Koscheck in the main event. The record attendance failed to secure the top spot for gate revenue for a UFC event bringing in $4.586 million.

The top earner for gate revenue still holds at $5,397,300 with UFC 66 back in December of 2006.

UFC 124_iiSaturday night’s UFC 124: St-Pierre vs. Koscheck II event saw “Fight Night” winners earn $100,000 in bonuses for their performances. Not since UFC 100 has the promotion handed out bonuses of this size to fighters.

Earning $100,000 was Mac Danzig, Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck, while Marc Bocek and Jim Miller split the bonus earning $50,000 each.

The “Knockout of the Night” was awarded to Mac Danzig for his first round finish of Joe Stevenson during the pay-per-view portion of the show. Danzig landed a solid left to Stevenson’s chin as his opponent moved in to press the attack. The single punch dropped Stevenson to the mat at 1:54 of the first.

The “Submission of the Night” honor was split between Marc Bocek and Jim Miller, who both earned submission wins in their bouts.

Bocek was able to finish opponent Dustin Hazelett in the first round with a triangle choke. As both men rolled for position, Bocek was able to lock in the triangle from the top position then rolled to his back to sink the choke deeper, eventually forcing the tap at 2:33.

Miller faced highly touted Charles Oliveira on the main card finishing the fight in the first round also. Oliveira looked to be setting up a submission attempt from the bottom grabbing Miller’s leg as he stood up leaving his left leg unprotected as he did. Miller quickly capitalized on the mistake by grabbing Oliveira’s leg and tried to apply an ankle lock but changed to a knee bar to earn the submission at 1:59.

For the first time in the promotions history the “Fight of the Night” bonus was awarded by fan voting, who chose main event fighters Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck for the honor. UFC president Dana White was not pleased with the fans decision saying “They blew it,” noting the fan voting would be a one-time only thing.

St-Pierre would take all five rounds against Koscheck earning a 50-45 score from all three judges. The champ would set the tone of the fight from the first round scoring with several jabs that caused Koscheck’s left eye to swell considerably. GSP used the jabs for the entire fight and Koscheck’s left eye would keep swelling each round, but not apparently enough for doctors to stop the fight. In the end, St-Pierre felt disappointed that he could not finish Koscheck but showed he’s capable of winning five rounds on his feet.

ufc-Red_200The Ultimate Fighting Championship looks to go international with upcoming events in Scotland and Brazil, while another event in Abu Dhabi looks uncertain.

UFC president Dana White confirmed that the promotion would be heading to Scotland for the first time in May. The event is expected to be UFC Fight Night 25 and MMAjunkie.com spoke to sources who say the show will go down at the Braehead Arena in city of Renfrewshire in the UK.

White will be heading to Rio de Janeiro next Wednesday, Dec. 15, for a press conference in what many are anticipating will be the announcement of the UFC’s return to Brazil. Tatame.com is reporting that the UFC is planning an event in August in Rio de Janeiro at the HSBC Arena which was built for the 2007 Pan-Am Games. Joining the UFC president at the press conference will reportedly be Lorenzo Fertitta, Anderson Silva, Maurício “Shogun” Rua, José Aldo, Vitor Belfort, Junior “Cigano” dos Santos and Royce Gracie.

The UFC President also noted recently in Montreal that the upcoming UFC 128 event might not take place in the city of Abu Dhabi, or even in the country of the United Arab Emirates. The event is rumored for March and would have seen the promotion return to the small middle eastern country since it debuted with UFC 112. No rumors have surfaced as to an alternative location at this time.
