HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (August 12, 2010) — Bellator Fighting Championships kicked off its highly anticipated third season tonight in front of a boisterous crowd at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Once again fans were treated to a full card of electrifying fights that included shocking finishes in nearly every fight.

In the night’s main event Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard took on former NFL player Whisper Goodman in a non-title Super Fight. In his last outing Lombard needed just six seconds to KO his opponent, this time it took only 38 seconds. Lombard overwhelmed his opponent early with right hook that wobbled Goodman before following up with a brutal flurry that left Whisper unconscious on the canvas just 38 seconds into round one.

When asked about his ability to take opponents out early Lombard stated,“I train hard, I train hard every day as hard I can.”

“I’m a knock-out artist, this is what I do”

Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney echoed his previous sentiment about Bellator’s Middleweight Champion.

“I think Hector Lombard is the best middleweight in the world. I believe he beats anybody he steps in the change with,” said Rebney.

In an opening round World Heavyweight Tournament fight British knockout artist Neil “The Goliath” Grove took on UFC Veteran Eddie Sanchez. Grove’s striking skills were on display early when he connected with a devastating left hand that sent Sanchez to the canvas. Grove followed up with brutal ground and pound before eventually letting a weary Sanchez back to his feat. Standing, Grove continued to batter Sanchez with precise strikes that eventually forced the referee to halt the fight less than a minute into the opening round.

.In Season 3 Women’s Tournament quarterfinal action, female pound-for-pound queen Megumi Fujii met late tournament replacement Carla Esparza. Fujii elected to stand and trade early with the wrestling specialist. The fight hit the ground for the first time midway through the first round with “Mega Megu” going for an ankle lock that Esparza painstakingly twisted out of. Round 2 saw Fujii bring Esparza down early and secure a slick fight ending arm-bar just 57 seconds into round 2 with the Japanese sensation again flexing her submission skills and subsequently improving her record to 21-0 while moving on to the Semi-final round of the tournament.

Also in Women’s Tournament action South Florida native Jessica Aguilar took on Lynn “Lights Out” Alvarez. Aguilar easily took Alvarez down early in the first round where she transitioned between ground and pound and submission attempts while in side guard. Aguilar was eventually able to secure an Arm Triangle Choke at 4:01 into the first round.

.“Winning in front of my fans is all I could ask for,” said Aguilar. “I was planning to finishing it as quickly as possible with little energy expended and no injuries.”

The Local Feature Fight between hometown favorite Luis “Baboon” Palomino and dangerous MMA veteran Yves Edwards proved to be an entertaining match-up with back and forth action that left Edwards with his hand raised after three rounds. Edwards now holds an astounding 38 wins in his MMA career.

“Tonight proved to be another great night of fights at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. We love coming here and can not wait for our return in October when Hector Lombard will face Alexander Shlemenko for the Bellator Middleweight Championship,” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney.

You can catch Bellator 24 action-packed highlight shows on NBC late Saturday nights.

Local Feature Fights:

Tulio Quintanilla def. Brian Eckstein – KO (Punches) 2:48 – Round 3

Farkhad Sharipov def. Eric Luke – Unanimous Decision

Now We’ve Seen it All Alert: BJ Penn and Jens Pulver Make Amends

While Chael Sonnen has been capturing much of the attention lately due to his mouth’s rather alarming ability to entertain and or enrage thousands at the same time, a certain P4P contender named Mr. BJ Penn, has also been known to do the same. As we’ve seen several times over the last few years, Penn’s never really been shy about sharing his ‘true feelings’ (dare we bring up the whole GSP thing?).

After losing to Jens Pulver way back in 2002, Penn never really ‘warmed up’ to the former champ, and during the fifth season of “The Ultimate Fighter” we all witnessed just how much Penn loathed his rival coach (you may recall that Penn cruised through Pulver in the 2007  rematch). Well, apparently time really does heal all wounds. In a video posted on the official BJ Penn site, here is some of what the Hawaiian had to say to Pulver, face to face:

“I’ve known this guy for a long time and over the years I’ve done some bad stuff to him. I’ve said bad things about him and as a man to another man I want to apologize for everything over the years. I know I’m going to need your help one day and as a man to a man that’s all in the past…”

Single tear? Pulver seemed pretty thrilled to be in the good books with BJ; maybe he’s picked up a few pointers for his War on the Mainland fight tomorrow. Jens will take on the 4-1 Diego Garijo, and as you probably know, the likeable Pulver needs a win really, really, really badly.

Ben Saunders, who fought as a welterweight, has been cut from the UFC according to his own post on FaceBook:

Sorry everyone I tried to fight my best these past two fights but ended up getting outworked. The UFC has officially cut me. The good news is they told me to work on my wrestling and ground game and then come back. So that is all I am going to be doing, improving dramatically and show them I belong. Much respect to Swick, Fitch, and Hallman as they were the better men on those nights and have my full respect. To fight such names is a true honor.

The 8-3-2 fighter competed on The Ultimate Fighter and lost his last two bouts to Jon Fitch and more recently(UFC 117) Dennis Hallman. His last win inside the Octagon came at UFC 106 against Marcus Davis and overall he had four wins to his three loses with the promotion.

BJ Penn Says “They’ve Just Got Little Frankie Edgar.”

Many MMA fans were pretty surprised that former champion BJ Penn hadn’t starting doing his traditional trash talking before fighting at UFC 118, but wait no more. Penn vs Edgar

Many MMA fans were pretty surprised that former champion BJ Penn hadn’t starting doing his traditional trash talking before fighting at UFC 118, but wait no more. Penn recently talked to FightLine, and showed little respect for the man that took his title, calling it a joke and then discussed how the fight would break down:

“I’m not afraid to exchange with him in any way,” said Penn. “I don’t think he wants to exchange with me. He’s going to be running around. He’s just going to try to jazz up what he did last time. A little quicker, a little better, maybe throw in a little kick. His corner, they don’t have much to work with. They’ve just got little Frankie Edgar. They don’t have the knockout king or the submission king. They’ve just got Frankie Edgar.”

Penn sounds slightly bitter, but most would be surprised if he doesn’t recapture his title. With another win Edgar would certainly cement himself as the champion, and not a one off fluke. UFC 118: Edgar Vs. Penn II is set for August 28 UFC 118 from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Also on the card is a highly anticipated matchup between Randy Couture and James Toney as well as an important lightweight bout between Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard.

Mike Dolce, Rampage Jackson’s Nutrition Specialist, Hired By Thiago Alves For Help With Dropping Weight.

Mike Dolce, thought by many to be one of the best nutritionists in the MMA game, has been hired by welterweight UFC fighter Thiago Alves to help get his weight problems under control. Alves has frequently come in over weight, the latest being a 1.5 pound miss at UFC 117 when he fought Jon […]

Mike Dolce, thought by many to be one of the best nutritionists in the MMA game, has been hired by welterweight UFC fighter Thiago Alves to help get his weight problems under control. Alves has frequently come in over weight, the latest being a 1.5 pound miss at UFC 117 when he fought Jon Fitch. Now Alves hopes that the man who helped Quinton “Rampage” Jackson lose 45 lbs before his return fight against Rashad Evans can help him stay in the 170 weight class. MMAFighting talked to Dolce:

“I’ve been a fan of Thiago’s for a long time, I just think he’s fun to watch, and I saw the problems he had with his weight, whether it was missing weight or underperforming because of struggling to make weight. So after this time I sent Malki [Kawa] a text and said, ‘Enough [expletive] around, let’s get me working with Thiago.’ Here it is Monday and we’re moving forward with it. Hat’s off to Malki and to Thiago for showing how serious they are about doing it.”

“Thiago told me on the phone earlier that he walks around at 195 [pounds] eight weeks before the fight. I said, ‘Sh-t, that’s it? You can do that the week before the fight with me and you’ll feel phenomenal.’”

“The sauna to me is like an oven. Most saunas are 180 degrees. You’re actually cooking, roasting your organs. You’re cooking your brain, your heart, your liver. You’re bringing them into a detrimental state on the eve of the most important event of your life. Why would you do that to yourself? Most athletes just think, Oh, I have to make weight. Not, I have to make weight and then perform at the best of my ability. I keep my athletes super-hydrated the week of the fight. I keep them eating food, eating carbohydrates the entire week of the fight.”

Alves is a popular fighter due to his aggressive style but his inability to come in at the right weight is certainly something that most MMA fans gripe about. With a better weight cut we could see a more powerful version of the fighter, which would be scary really. Will it happen?
