Khamzat Chimaev’s coach Andreas Michael has taken to social media to reflect on his student’s backstage brawl which took place with Kevin Holland prior to the scheduled UFC press conference.

UFC 279 has undoubtedly been one of the most unique fight weeks so far. At the time of writing one half of the main event, Khamzat Chimaev is currently 7.5 pounds overweight, and questions are now circulating about whom Nate Diaz will face in the main event of UFC 279.

Prior to all this commotion, Andreas Michael was full of praise for his student following his confrontation with Kevin Holland and Team Diaz backstage which ultimately led to the press conference being canceled.

Despite the rumors circulating Andreas Michael has claimed the chaos ensuing yesterday’s incident had been exaggerated greatly however not everyone left the way they entered.

“What happened was that Khamzat went inside by himself, then he came and it started with Kevin Holland and gave him, like, a boot in the chest.”

“Then they started whatever they’re doing and then the Diaz crew came in and they started doing what they were doing. But nobody got injured, thank God.”

Andreas Michael responds to rumours surrounding Darren Till

One of the rumors circulating throughout social media following the incident was that Darren Till had been stabbed during the ordeal. Something that clearly was never going to be true. However to put minds at ease after some regarding the entire matter and to get the truth out Michael spoke on Till on his social media ensuring all that the scouser was in a good way.

“Darren didn’t visit the hospital, so everything was good, guys,” Michael said. “That’s what happened.

“We’re here to fight in the cage, not in the streets. Fifty-to-one, things like that — sportsmen, sportsmen, that’s what we are. Sportsmen. So let’s f****** be sportsmen and stop all this s***. On Saturday, we’ve got a fight coming up and that’s the most important thing.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting)

Highly unlikely to feature in any conversation to feature in an impromptu UFC 279 headliner at welterweight against Nate Diaz, former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier has thrown his name into the hat, however, after Khamzat Chimaev tipped the welterweight scales at 178.5lbs – a full seven and a half pounds above the non-title limit.

Slated to headline this weekend at UFC 279 against the Stockton veteran, Diaz, Chimaev stepped on the official scales at this evening’s weigh-ins at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada – missing the non-title limit at welterweight by seven and a half pounds, casting his fight with Diaz into major jeopardy.

Weighing in after Diaz, the Californian successfully made the weight non-title limit of 171lbs for his contracted headliner with Chimaev.

With the promotion now mulling over potential replacements for Chimaev, with a plan in place since earlier this Friday – former interim lightweight titleholder, Dustin Poirier, who had been chomping at the bit to fight Diaz since the beginning of this year, has offered to fight the Stockton native.

Dustin Poirier makes offer to fight Nate Diaz on short notice at UFC 279

Sharing a picture of him standing on his weighing scales, Dustin Poirier, a native of Lafayette, Louisiana – shared the image of him weighing 176.6lbs on his official Twitter account – in an attempt to likely save the card and land a welterweight fight with Diaz.

Despite his massive weight miss, Chimaev, as per UFC officials at the UFC Apex facility – along with both Hakeem Dawodu, and Chris Barnett, will not attempt to make weight at the second time of trying following misses for all three.

Poking fun at his glaring weight cut miss, Chimaev shared a photoshopped picture of himself and teammate, former welterweight championship challenger, Darren Till, joking that the Liverpool native was to blame for his weight skew.

“@darrentill2 it’s his fault (laughing face emoji),” Khamzat Chimaev tweeted.

Paulo Costa

UFC No.6 ranked middleweight Paulo Costa has stated that Khamzat Chimaev is afraid to show his face following an altercation at the UFC’s Performance Institute during UFC 279 fight week.

Khamzat Chimaev is set to face Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 279 at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas, in what is expected to be the Stockton-natives final appearance inside a UFC octagon. Despite having the spotlight very much upon him as he main events a UFC PPV for the first time, Chimaev did not hesitate from exchanging in a fiery war of words with Brazilian middleweight Paulo Costa.

Following the pair’s interaction, Paulo Costa believes the undefeated prospect is afraid of him and that, during their confrontation, he truly did not want things to escalate into a fight. Speaking to TheMacLife, Costa revealed that he felt Chimaev was simply playing up for the camera, and had he wanted to, the pair could have settled their differences there and then.

“It was just me, Jake Shields, and Tamara, my girlfriend. But he was not there to fight, he just wanted to talk some s***. And now he is hiding. I came here for a couple of days after that, maybe he’s hiding in some cave, some hole, I don’t know. I didn’t see him anymore.” (Transcribed by MirrorSport)

Paulo Costa welcomes a fight with Robert Whittaker

Following on from his battle with Luke Rockhold at UFC 278, Costa has expressed his interest in a potential matchup against the No.1 ranked middleweight contender Robert Whittaker.

Costa is heading into the final bout on his contract and therefore would like to have the opportunity to make a statement in what may potentially be his final matchup inside the promotion if he does not choose to re-sign. The Brazilian kept it short and sweet when asked about a potential matchup against the Australian after the former-interim champion expressed an interest in jumping up into the light heavyweight division.

‘Robert Whittaker is a very good fighter. I think he says he wants to move up to 205 but I hope he is able to fight me before that. If he decides to move right now, I respect him.”

How do you see that potential matchup playing out?

UFC 279

Tonight’s much-anticipated UFC 279 pre-fight press conference, featuring welterweights, Khamzat Chimaev, and Nate Diaz has been officially cancelled by UFC president, Dana White – who cited a “sh*t show” incident backstage, with rumors circulating regarding a potential altercation between fighters and camps.

Slated to headline UFC 279 on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada – Chimaev, who most recently defeated Gilbert Burns back in April, draws the exiting Diaz, who is set to complete his contractual obligations following the event.

Ahead of tonight’s awaited UFC 279 press conference, the promotion were expected to field a stage featuring Kevin Holland, Daniel Rodriguez, Li Jingliang, Tony Ferguson, as well as Chimaev and Diaz to field questions from assembled media.

However, upon the eventual start of the conference, White confirmed that the promotion would be bringing out fighters to field questions two at a time, with Holland and Rodriguez first appearing – amid a suspected backstage incident.

Dana White calls a halt to tonight’s UFC 279 pre-fight press event

With Holland and Rodriguez facing off and exiting the stage, White waited in anticipation of Ferguson and Jingliang, before confirming that they would be putting an end to the press conference – the first time in promotional antiquity, in fact – citing his concerns for safety.

“Yeah, this ain’t gonna happen,” Dana White said. “I apologize everybody. I am in very weird waters here. This has never happened in the history of this company, so. Trust me when I tell you this is the right decision – not to do this press conference right now. And – yeah, I hear you – I’m with you. But for everybody’s safety, this is the right decision, alright? I apologise. Thanks for coming.”

As the stream came to a close on the promotion’s official YouTube channel, the aforenoted former interim lightweight champion, Ferguson emerged – shouting “next question” before launching a baseball into the crowd for cheering fans.

According to a report from MMA journalist, Ariel Helwani, the aforenoted Holland and Chimaev are alleged to have been involved in an altercation backstage ahead of the UFC 279 press event, before an altercation spilled over into the team of Diaz.

“Early word is Khamzat Chimaev and Kevin Holland initially got into it and the whole situation got out of hand,” Ariel Helwani tweeted. “Then the situation spilled over to Nate’s (Diaz) team. Lots of chaos. More coming in. Developing.”

“Total chaos, I’m told,” Helwani tweeted. “Not enough security. Fighters too close. Could have been much worse but it got out of hand quick between multiple camps.”

Khamzat Chimaev delivered a fiery response after Kevin Holland labeled him a “wannabe street” guy.

The top-ranked welterweight contender is set to make his first headline bout with Nate Diaz at UFC 279 on Sep. 10 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ahead of the upcoming matchup, “Borz” has been getting into new rivalries and nearly came to blows with former middleweight title challenger Paulo Costa at the UFC Performance Institute.

Kevin Holland bashed Khamzat Chimaev for his altercation with Paulo Costa

During the build-up to UFC 279, Holland took a dig at Chimaev for pretending to be a street guy when he’s not.

“He only does this extra wannabe street s*** when the media is around,” Holland said during UFC 279 media day interviews (ht BJPenn.com). “Other than that, he doesn’t do it. When you guys aren’t around, he wants to do fist bumps and he wants to be your best friend. When you guys are around, he’s like, I’m going to rip your head off! You ain’t ripping s*** off dog, you just want a paycheck like the rest of these guys around here.”

Chimaev and Holland go back and forth

Chimaev came across Holland’s comments and issued a response in the comments, recalling an earlier skirmish between the two.

“Did you forget that last slap I gave you at the hotel?” Chimaev wrote. “Do you want one more?!”

“Slap LOL boy you pushed like you’re in middle school then ran to your corners. Not to mention you tried for a fist bump me to say sorry. You’re cap, kid,” Holland replied.

Holland is set to compete against Daniel Rodriguez in a catchweight contest on the main card of the night. Following a rough period at middleweight, “Trailblazer” found his best form in a return to the 170-pound weight class. He will go into the bout looking to extend his win streak to three, having defeated Alex Oliveira and Tim Means earlier this year.
