When Cat Zingano defeated Miesha Tate at the TUF 17 Finale earlier this month, she earned herself a shot at champion Ronda Rousey’s UFC title. But before the two women square off for the right to be called the queen of mixed martial arts, they will compete opposite one another as coaches on the 18th season of The Ultimate Fighter.

It will mark the first time that either female coaches or female contestants have been a part of the reality series, making it perhaps the most intriguing season the show has produced in years.

If that novelty is not enough to pique your interest, check out this video, produced by MMA Fighting’s Casey Leydon and Esther Lin. It’s definitely worth your time and just might get you back on the TUF bandwagon.

The video is set at the at the TUF 18 women’s tryouts, where female fighters from as far as the United Kingdom are attempting to earn themselves a spot in the house.

You will see hopefuls talk about what the opportunity means to them, as well as to the sport they love; you’ll see grappling highlights from the day, and of course, you’ll see some obligatory shots of Dana White.

You will also see a couple of faces familiar to the WMMA scene, namely Shayna Baszler and Tara LaRosa, who will look to put exclamation marks on already successful careers by taking their talents into the Octagon.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the short film is the collective sense of camaraderie expressed by the women partaking in the tryout. Most seem supportive of their colleagues, expressing their excitement for the growth of WMMA in greater degree than for the opportunity that awaits them personally.

It will be interesting to see whether that unity lasts when they are all locked up in the house together, forced into competition, but that is something we will learn in time.

For now, check out the video. It’s a piece both intriguing and inspiring.

UFC Women’s Bantamweight Miesha Tate Blasts Referee Kim Winslow on Facebook

Former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate still has a bone to pick with referee Kim Winslow’s stoppage in her thrilling matchup with Cat Zingano last week.

“Cupcake” wrote on her Facebook fan page early Monday morning to vent about suffering a TKO in the third round after controlling the majority of the first two rounds:

“Post fight pic taken Monday, you all are wondering about my nose, its fine still a little swollen but im going to get the suspension lifted ASAP, and I will be back! Cant help my nose bleeds a lot still frustrated at the stoppage, think the ref freaked because of blood when she should have been focusing on the fact that I was still perfectly coherent and shooting for a takedown after two solid knees landed I was still in the fight and up on the score cards. Can’t pay enogh respect to Cat she’s a warrior & I’d love the honor of fighting her in the future again but NOT with Kim Winslow as the ref”

Tate made a similar argument at “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 17 Finale post-fight press conference, indicating that she didn’t feel “for one second” that the fight should’ve been stopped (via the UFC).

The loss is undeniably a heartbreaker for Tate, who missed out on an opportunity to coach TUF opposite her rival, UFC women’s champ Ronda Rousey, as well as fight a rematch with “Rowdy” at the season’s conclusion.

Tate, who entered the match up with Zingano winning seven of her past eight bouts, has also now lost two of her past three fights.

Speaking with MMA Junkie on Monday, UFC President Dana White stated that although he is no fan of Winslow himself, he had no issue with her stoppage in the Tate-Zingano fight.

With the victory, Zingano improved to 8-0 and will likely fight Rousey for the belt at the end of the year.

UFC Fighter Liz Carmouche Campaigns to Be Nike’s Sponsored Gay Athlete

Liz Carmouche is the first openly gay UFC fighter, and if her campaign is successful, she may very well be the first openly gay spokesperson for Nike as well.

According to Scott Soshnick of Bloomberg.com, Nike is searching for a gay endorser to add to its already impressive list of athletes. There aren’t a ton of options due to the taboos related to coming out as a professional athlete, but Carmouche would seem to be an ideal fit.

Carmouche tweeted at Nike to make her case, and she certainly has a very compelling one. Not only is the former No. 1 contender an open and proud gay woman, but she also fought in the very first women’s UFC bout back in February as she lost to bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

If Nike is trying to widen the acceptance of gay athletes and broaden its scope as a company as well, then Carmouche is certainly a viable candidate. She is one of the most recognizable female fighters in the world, and her popularity would only grow with the support of Nike.

According to gay-marketing strategist Bob Witeck (via Soshnick), a Nike-sponsored gay athlete “would earn millions in endorsements” with Nike as well as other companies due to the buying power of the gay population in the United States. Not only would this be a great opportunity for Carmouche from a personal perspective, but it would benefit her financially as well.

Nike has yet to respond to Carmouche’s request publicly, but she appears to be the first athlete to throw his or her hat into the ring. A successful company like Nike is sure to exercise due diligence throughout this process, but there is no questioning Carmouche’s qualifications.

UFC on Fox 7: Frank Mir Very Happy with Permanent Change to Jackson’s MMA

Frank Mir will always claim Las Vegas as his own but the former UFC heavyweight champion seems to have found a new home in the weeks leading up to his UFC on Fox 7 clash against Daniel Cormier.

Mir spoke to the Las Vegas Sun about his recent move to Jackson’s MMA in Albuquerque and the benefits it has provided.

“Having a bigger depth of talent to work with in the gym every day and bouncing  ideas off of them was great,” Mir said. “Misery enjoys company, and having all  these other world-class fighters in the gym made it all go a little faster.”

Don’t be surprised if you see a different Mir in the Octagon against Cormier. After all, one would expect Mir’s game to rise given the level of talent he’s training with now. The former UFC champ has said he’s sparred with Jon Jones, Andrei Arlovski and Travis Browne all on the same day.

It’s not just the great training partners Mir works with that help improve his game either.

“And having guys like Donald Cerrone sitting outside of the cage when I’m with  those guys and giving me pointers and tips was a great help,” Mir said. “Everyone, in my eyes, was a great help.”

Mir will need all the help he can get as Cormier has looked great thus far into his MMA career. After competing with the United States’ Olympic wrestling team, Cormier has won all of his MMA bouts thus far and has finished five of them before the final bell.

His last performance against Josh Barnett was particularly telling as Cormier simply dominated the former UFC champion including a highlight reel worthy slam.

Regardless of the outcome in his fight, Mir believes he’ll travel to Jackson’s MMA again for his next contest.

“It will be a permanent move,” Mir said. “I think a lot of people would say, if I lose I wouldn’t  consider the move to be justified, but I don’t agree — it was a great experience  and I’ll be back to do it again.”
