Michael Chiesa and Phillip Phillips: Comparing TUF Winners to American Idols

On the surface, the link between American Idol and The Ultimate Fighter seems to be nonexistent. The UFC’s trademark reality TV show and America’s most popular singing competition aren’t often thought of as kindred spirits.

However, when you think about the two shows, there are certainly some similarities.

Both shows attempt to find largely undiscovered up-and-comers and offer them a shot at making it to the big-time through competition (all while not-so-subtly making money off of the ensuing drama). These two shows may not have much overlap between their audiences (I may be the only one who will admit to watching both), but they have been entertaining us for the better part of a decade.

Another thing they have in common is that it’s hard to tell just how far the winners will go. There are TUF alumni that have gone on to hold championships and there are a few that never quite lived up to the billing of winning the show. Similarly AI has produced some highly successful recording artists and a few artists that never quite made it and ended up with a minor role in a Broadway adaptation of Grease.

Whether you are a fan of both shows or not, there are a few winners from each whose careers are very similar.

Speculation was rampant earlier today as news of Brian Stann’s injury meant Hector Lombard would need a new opponent to welcome him to the UFC’s Octagon. Lombard found his new welcome committee in Tim Boetsch at UFC 149.

The UFC’s official website has released the information that Michael Bisping has been injured and has been forced to back out of his fight with Boetsch. Lombard will now be bumped up to a PPV broadcast in his UFC debut.

Lombard hasn’t lost since he faced Gegard Mousasi back in 2006. He helped build Bellator from the ground up and debuted at Bellator 3. The Cuban won his first two bouts via KO in the opening frame and won Bellator’s Middleweight Title via TKO in the tournament final.

He would go on to hold the Bellator belt until his departure from the company but competed in a number of catchweight and non-title bouts during his time in the promotion.

Boetsch, meanwhile, has rebuilt his career since dropping to 185 pounds following a loss to Phil Davis in 2010. Boetsch has won three consecutive bouts, with his latest being an incredible come-from-behind victory over former title contender Yushin Okami.

Boetsch is probably one of the strongest middleweights in the UFC right now, and Lombard is certainly no slouch himself. Both men have power and grappling skills to balance their attacks.

It will be a battle of wills when these two massive middleweights clash at UFC 149, and fight fans will finally have their questions about Lombard’s place among the 185-pound elite answered, as Boetsch is a great test for the former Bellator champion.

The big question on everyone’s mind today was, “Who will the UFC find to fight Hector Lombard?”

Well, the answer may not be who they expected. Lombard went to Twitter to call out Michael Bisping in hopes of drawing “The Count” as Brian Stann’s replacement. Unfortunately for Lombard, it appears Bisping suffered an injury in training and has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 149 bout against Tim Boetsch.

The UFC broke the news late Thursday night on their Web site. Lombard will now step in for Bisping at UFC 149.

This may turn out to be good news for the Cuban fighter as Boetsch is a similar fighter to Stann, whom Lombard was in camp preparing to face. There is also less pressure in a fight with Boetsch as most of the attention will be firmly placed on Jose Aldo and Erik Koch in the lead up to the card.

There is no word on the type of injury that Bisping suffered, though it was bad enough that he had to pull out of the fight. Bisping vs. Boetsch was originally slated for UFC 148, but was moved to the Calgary event to give the card a bit more star power.

This move also helps to strengthen the Calgary event which just saw Mauricio Rua moved to the UFC on FOX 4 card.

Hopefully this is the last of the injury news for the week. I don’t think I can take much more of this. I can only imagine how stressful this has been for Joe Silva who has to play magician to save these cards.

UFC 149 takes place July 21 at the Saddledome in Calgary, Canada.

UFC: Hector Lombard Calls out Michael Bisping to Fight

UFC newcomer Hector Lombard was supposed to headline UFC on Fox 4 until a separated shoulder forced Brian Stann to withdraw from the main event match-up. Needless to say, this has put Lombard’s initial fight in the UFC on temporary stand-by.

Lombard may have found a perfect solution, which resulted in him taking to his Twitter account on Wednesday, challenging another middleweight title contender and former Ultimate Fighter winner, Michael “The Count” Bisping.

Lombard simply tweeted, “Bisping I’m calling you out.”

This is definitely a fight that would be accepted by fans and would make the most sense in terms of relevancy to a title shot.

Since the UFC has already named Brandon Vera vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua as the new main event for the UFC on Fox 4, UFC 149 would be the more logical card to change.

Bisping’s current UFC 149 opponent is Tim Boetsch, a good fighter in the UFC whom many do not see as a title contender at the moment.

Bisping has been a very reliable and solid competitor inside of the Octagon but lacks a solid top-five win. A win over Boetsch would mean little for Bisping in terms of receiving a title opportunity.

Lombard is riding a 25-consecutive unbeaten streak into the UFC and I think that would be just the recipe if Bisping wants a UFC title shot.

As for benefiting Lombard, Bisping is a top-five contender with a big name, and a win over “The Count” would immediately silence any doubters.

Bisping would be the better pure striker but Lombard brings a wide array of powerful strikes that are somewhat unpredictable.

This would serve as a very entertaining fight for fans and should easily determine who is the No. 1 contender for the middleweight championship.

Let’s just see if the Dana White and the UFC takes this opportunity and makes it happen.

UFC on FX 3: Can Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall Recreate the Magic?

While it’s doubtful that Mighty Mouse and Uncle Creepy can recreate the controversy of their first fight, fans are hopeful that Ultimate Fighter semi-finalists Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall can put together the same level of thrilling entertainment that they did in their March confrontation.

Is it a pipe dream?

I’m not suggesting that these caged warriors won’t put on an entertaining fight. If anything, I expect them to try and outdo their previous performance. But, this would not be the first time that matchmakers have tried to have lightning strike twice.

Rematches of exciting fights don’t always turn out smelling like roses. Do you remember Griffin vs Bonnar II? Or Shamrock vs Severn II?

The original battle between Johnson and McCall made history. As the first flyweight battle in UFC history, both men knew that they were part of something magical. With intensity and pugnacity, the 125 pound fighters gave us a 15 minute battle that nearly saw McCall take home the victory and move one step closer to the inaugural UFC Flyweight Championship.

Should we be skeptical about this fight? Probably not. McCall and Johnson are two fighters with incredible heart and the desire to become champions. When they square off on Friday night, make sure you are tuned in because we should expect nothing less than fireworks.

UFC on FX 3 takes place on Friday, June 8. The main card airs on FX and features four battles that will be contested at 170 pounds or lower. An eight-fight preliminary card will air on Fuel TV.
