Michael Chiesa and Phillip Phillips: Comparing TUF Winners to American Idols

On the surface, the link between American Idol and The Ultimate Fighter seems to be nonexistent. The UFC’s trademark reality TV show and America’s most popular singing competition aren’t often thought of as kindred spirits.

However, when you think about the two shows, there are certainly some similarities.

Both shows attempt to find largely undiscovered up-and-comers and offer them a shot at making it to the big-time through competition (all while not-so-subtly making money off of the ensuing drama). These two shows may not have much overlap between their audiences (I may be the only one who will admit to watching both), but they have been entertaining us for the better part of a decade.

Another thing they have in common is that it’s hard to tell just how far the winners will go. There are TUF alumni that have gone on to hold championships and there are a few that never quite lived up to the billing of winning the show. Similarly AI has produced some highly successful recording artists and a few artists that never quite made it and ended up with a minor role in a Broadway adaptation of Grease.

Whether you are a fan of both shows or not, there are a few winners from each whose careers are very similar.

Ronda Rousey to Star in ESPN Body Issue: Strikeforce Hottie Keeps Rising

Sports fans love a girl who can fight and put her opponents down with nothing but a vicious mindset and a quiet smile. Those same qualities have helped put many sexy athletes on the map, and we believe it’s time for Ronda Rousey to truly get noticed.

And apparently so do the folks over at the ESPN Body Issue headquarters, as they are set to have the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion herself grace their pages, according to MMAJunkie.com.

Now that she’s escaped the shadows of fellow beauty Miesha Tate, defeating her rival with an armbar four minutes into the first round earlier this month, Rousey can take her carefree attitude and tough exterior to the top of the food chain.

With icons such as Gina Carano and Jon Jones having flipped the script for the Body Issue previously, it’s not as if Rousey is sailing into uncharted waters. But she may be ready to make a huge splash.

Considering Rousey’s fight against Tate had 431,000 Showtime viewers, it’s safe to say the Body Issue is hoping to witness a significant increase in readers for this coming fall, when we hope it arrives on the stands.

Until that time, Rousey will comfortably relax to the nice tune of 5-0. Five matches, five deadly armbars, five reasons to bare it all for a new audience.

They’ll be plenty of new crowds waiting eagerly for Rousey’s upcoming appearance.

With her recent win over Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey has become the heir-apparent to Gina Carano as the face of WMMA.

Whereas Carano built her image on striking prowess and good looks, Rousey is a deadly combination of bloodlust and beauty, wielding a vicious submission game and a knockout smile equally well.

Rousey’s ascent to queen of MMA was a bloodless coup, the throne vacated by Carano in favor of a place on the big screen.

While the departure of Carano was a blow to the sport, the real danger lies in her decision starting a trend. What if Rousey decides to follow in Carano’s footsteps? Where would WMMA be then? The picture is pretty bleak.

But, we are not here to dwell on the negative. We are here to look on the bright side. As is the case with the loss of Carano, WMMA’s loss of Rousey would be Hollywood’s gain, and there are a number of roles out there suited perfectly for the former Olympian.

The following 20 potential roles are just the tip of the iceberg for Rousey, who could star in an endless number of cinematic masterpieces over the next decade alone.

Enjoy.

There are many reasons to love the various sports our great nation has to offer. Each sport has at least one major reason we love to follow it. It could be because of our favorite team, player, or even coach. For me it was Will Clark in baseball, New Orleans Saints in football, and Alonzo Mourning in basketball.

If I had to do the same for Mixed Martial Arts, I would be in a difficult situation because there are more than one reason to love this sport. I found 25 excellent reasons to follow a sport that was once known as Vale Tudo.

Of course, many of my choices are women but who can really blame me once you take a look at the selections?
