Knockout of the Day: Pete Spratt’s Spinning Backfist as Time Expires at AFC 2

Imagine you wake up from a devistating spinning backfist knockout. You’re already pretty confused as it is, and now you’re finding out that you lost your fight by…unanimous decision? That’s how it feels to be Daniel Acacio, who met Pete Spratt at Amazon Forest Combat 2 last night.

Before anyone else points it out, you’re right: this technically isn’t a knockout. Spratt, who is no stranger to winning Knockout of the Day honors, landed the spinning backfist that caught Acacio right on the chin as the horn sounded for the end of the fight. So technically, this isn’t a knockout, and the fight went to the judges’ scorecards, who all saw the fight in Spratt’s favor. So yes, this is technically “Unanimous Decision of the Day”- because I’m sure it matters to Acacio’s remaining brain cells and all.

By the way, if you’re looking for a more productive way to spend April Fools Day than threatening to delete your blog, check out the rest of the card. Amazon Forest Combat 2 also saw a rematch between Matt Horwich and Thales Leites, Patrick Cote knock out Gustavo Machado and Murilo Bustamante edge out Dave Menne. Enjoy.

("Stop it? My naughtiness, I thought you said, ‘Snap it.’"

When Rousimar Palhares inexplicably stopped to tell the ref that he thought Nate Marquardt’s leg felt greasy in their Ultimate Fight Night 22 bout Wednesday night, armchair fighters, referees and coaches alike collectively yelled, "What the hell are you doing?" at their television screens.

It turns out, they weren’t the only ones yelling.

Palhares’ longtime Brazilian Top Team trainer and coach, Murilo Bustamante told Tatame that he too was screaming from the sidelines for his charge not to let up and says that they have learned from the rookire mistake that may have cost Rousimar a title shot in the near future.

“We’ve talked about it a lot, he knows what he did wrong. I guarantee it won’t happen again, he learned the lesson on the worst possible way, paying for his distraction and lack of naughtiness," Bustamante explained. "Maybe the other fighter could stop to see what it was about, but Nate kept on going and didn’t do anything illegal. It was a lesson learned. It happens.”

Former UFC middleweight champion Murilo Bustamante had experienced similar dizziness before, but says he is still doesn’t know exactly why it happened this past Saturday leading to his loss against Jesse Taylor at Impact FC 2 in Sydney, Australia.

Bustamante, who was coming out of retirement, was visibly disoriented after a referee standup and referee “Big” John McCarthy promptly called an end to the fight at 2:10 of the second round.

“When I was playing guard during the second round, I started to get dizzy after a while, and when ‘Big’ John put us back on our feet I felt like I was badly drunk, I was dizzy and everything was spinning,” Bustamante told MMAFighting.com on Thursday. “I didn’t know at the time what happened as I didn’t get hit that hard during the fight.”
