Tonight’s (Sat., October 6, 2018) UFC 229 main event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, is the biggest UFC fight ever. It’s understandable that it’s bringing the biggest and best from the sports and entertainment worlds. That was clear when superstar rapper Drake became involved.

Such was the case at last night’s UFC 229 ceremonial weigh-ins. Chaos erupted at the scene, with Conor McGregor throwing a kick at Khabib, a McGregor fan slapping a woman, and more McGregor fans just being all-out buffoons.

Drake caused a commotion of a calmer kind when he joined McGregor onstage. The rap game’s biggest star is clearly a part of Team McGregor. He even wore an Irish flag to show his loyalty:

Drake even took time to laugh it up with McGregor and his family backstage:

Hans Molenkamp posted an up-close video of Drake and McGregor at the weigh-in on Instagram:

And of course, the UFC didn’t waste the opportunity to promote the sports/music crossover:

Khabib and McGregor came nose-to-nose for the last time at tonight’s ceremonial weigh-ins. As expected, the scene was an over-the-top one.

We wouldn’t expect anything less from what’s rightly being called the biggest UFC fight of all-time. UFC President Dana White wouldn’t let the two get too close, but McGregor did anyway. He slapped Khabib’s hands and threw a kick at the champion when they were separated.

Nate Diaz changes his tune about potentially fighting former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor for a third fight. This comes off the heels of McGregor recently going on record by stating that he would be willing to fight Diaz for the 165-pound title.

Two Fights Before

Their last fight came back at UFC 202 when Diaz suffered a majority decision loss. This came five months after Diaz submitted McGregor in their first bout at UFC 196. Diaz has his next fight lined up as he’s slated to fight Dustin Poirier in a lightweight bout at the upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view event.

TMZ Sports recently caught up with Diaz to get his take on McGregor fighting Nurmagomedov in the headliner of UFC 229 pay-per-view this weekend.

Nate Diaz Changes His Tune

This is where Diaz stated that he thinks McGregor is the favorite to win due to his belief that “Khabib is scared for his life.” He also stated that “I think Conor has got a way better fight style.” The reason for his mindset is due to the UFC lightweight champion not facing real quality opponents — “That fool ain’t fought nobody.”

Diaz also talked about a potential third fight against McGregor. This is where he downplayed it the idea.

“I ain’t fighting no trilogy. He already got his ass whipped. He can fight everybody else. I got shit to do too.”

Save The Date

The UFC 230 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass. A vacant flyweight title fight between Valentina Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanks will serve as the headliner.

Conor McGregor may be coming back to MMA because he loves it. But a $50 million dollar payday doesn’t hurt.

McGregor finally did grace the fans and media in attendance today in Las Vegas at the second press conference for UFC 229.

He also gave a bit of a financial forecast. The Irishman is claiming the event is trending to sell 3.5 million pay-per-views, which will earn him an estimated $50 million dollars:

“We’re estimating around 3 to 3.5 million [pay-per-view buys], I’d say I’ll close in around the $50 million mark,” McGregor replied when asked what his takeaway from UFC 229 would be.”

Many To Thank

McGregor called that potential payday “breathtaking.” He thanked his employers past and present with the UFC:

“So, for a mixed martial artist to make $50 million from a mixed martial arts bout, it’s quite breathtaking. I have to thank my management stable, Paradigm Sports Management. I’ve got to thank Dana White, I’ve got to thank Lorenzo Fertitta and Frank (Fertitta) who schooled me in the game.”

“The new owners…W…what’s the name…WME-IMG? Those guys as well. I haven’t really met them that much but they’ve been good to me so far — Ari (Emmanuel) and those guys. Life is good.”

Changing The Game

McGregor can’t believe how much the MMA landscape has changed since his epic clash with Nate Diaz back in March of 2016.

“To think where we have come from… when I fought Nate Diaz he was on $20,000 to show and $20,000 to win — the game has gone to so many new heights, so quickly and we’re just trying to keep up.

“And it’s a great time to be involved in the sport for myself, the fighters, the promoters, for the managers, for the media in attendance, for the fans, for everyone… times are good so let’s enjoy it. Let’s enjoy these momentous occasions.”

Finally, McGregor upped his finance forecast by saying he’d be a billionaire by the time he hit 25 years old:

“I’m 30 now, say by about 35 I’ll be a billionaire.”

Earlier today, speculation ran wild when UFC President Dana White revealed he would ‘try’ to make the UFC 230 co-main between Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier a five-round main event.

White and the UFC announced that the UFC 230 main event would feature Valentina Shevchenko vs. Sijara Eubanks earlier this week. The decision left many fans surprised and shocked that bout would headline a major PPV from New York.

The UFC exec was asked about the fight’s status at the beginning of today’s UFC 229 pre-fight press conference. White gave a brief update on the on Diaz vs. Poirier:

“We’re still working on New York. And as far I know right now, that’s fight’s happening. Yes.”

Pressed about whether it was the main event or not, White backed off his promise and emphatically said it was not:

“No. Not the main event.”

Well, that’s that. At least for now, as White has been known to say one thing and do the other immediately afterward. As he likes to say, ‘we’ll see what happens.’ Indeed we will.
