Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz will finally come face to face once again in one of the most anticipated rematches in UFC history—a welterweight bout at UFC 202 on Saturday, August 20.

Diaz shocked the world with a submission win at UFC 196, coming into the fight on short notice against a man who had seemed almost unbeatable up until that point.

As reported by Odds Shark’s Justin Hartling, McGregor is a slight favourite this time around, with bookmakers anticipating that he’ll be better prepared for Diaz‘s resilient fighting style. Here’s a look at the latest odds:

The Notorious One didn’t have much difficulty hitting Diaz in their first meeting, landing solid shots throughout the first round, but he visibly tired and was unable to keep up the volume in the second. Diaz rocked him with a vicious blow, and McGregor never recovered, going for an ill-advised takedown that ended in a simple submission for Diaz.

McGregor blamed a lack of conditioning for the loss, and per James Dielhenn of Sky Sports, he’s taking that part of his preparation far more seriously this time around:

McGregor made no secret of his preference to train at night then sleep all morning. But not any more…

“We do an early session and a late session – we do skills-based stuff early then strength and conditioning, and cardiovascular, later in the day,” said McGregor‘s sports scientist Julian Dalby, exclusively to Sky Sports.

“From a neuro standpoint, the athlete is sharper and fresher earlier in the day. For the second session, the athlete doesn’t feel like he has to hold back in the conditioning training. You don’t have to worry that, if you get tired, someone will get you in a guillotine choke!”

What hasn’t changed is McGregor‘s tendency to try and get under his opponent’s skin during the pre-fight media tour. The UFC hasn’t hyped this bout in the way they hyped the Irishman’s title fight with Jose Aldo, but when you have two brash, outspoken personalities like Diaz and McGregor, little is needed.

This incident during a recent press conference sent Twitter into overdrive, via Bleacher Report UK (warning: NSFW language):

TMZ Sports explained what happened:

Naturally, the incident led to plenty of back-and-forths between fans of both fighters on social media, but other UFC fighters got involved as well. Dan Henderson can’t wait for these two to meet again:

Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Snowden wonders whether McGregor‘s pre-fight tactics are having any effect, however:

The big question ahead of this bout is of course whether there’s any reason to believe McGregor has any chance of avenging his loss in the first place. After all, Diaz‘s advantages in size and reach are still there, as is his strong ground game, and this time, he’ll be better prepared.

Diaz is as durable as they come, and while he has been knocked out before, he tends to take big shots far better than most. McGregor has the hand speed for a sustained attack to win by decision, but he’s simply not used to fighting a guy who is physically bigger than him―he always had a huge reach advantage in the featherweight division.

The key to this fight will be McGregor‘s ability to establish his jab―he tends to rely too much on his left hand, something that won’t work against Diaz. If he can mix in enough kicks to keep Diaz on his heels and he has the stamina to keep it up until the final bell, then he should be able to avenge his UFC 196 defeat.

Prediction: McGregor takes a close decision win.

Nate Diaz On How Much He’s Getting Paid For UFC 202: “Less Than I Deserve”

At the official UFC 202 Open Workouts on Thursday evening (watch video highlights here), Nate Diaz gave a brief interview where he touched on such topics as the wild scene at Wednesday’s press conference, his pay for his rematch against Conor McGregor and wanting to get Nick Diaz unbanned from the rest of the UFC 202-related events this weekend.

Regarding the incident that unfolded at the final official press conference for Saturday’s pay-per-view in Las Vegas, Diaz explained what bothered him enough to simply get up and walk out along with the rest of his team in the middle of the event.

“I’m here as a businessman, doing what I’ve got to do,” Diaz said. “We’re all in the business. I want to behave myself and come out here and act right, but I’ve got to keep it real too. But not even keep it real — like, stay true to myself and what I believe in and I believe that if a mother*cker comes in with his team like they’re the head honcho sh*t, I’m going to let you know that we’ve got a whole gang ready to ride. You what I’m saying? So it’s all good. So they came in like they were hot sh*t, but we’ve got a whole army in here, so it ain’t nothing I ain’t seen before. It’s all good.”

From there, the subject switched to his brother, fellow UFC fighter Nick Diaz. As things stand right now, Nick will not be able to be in the corner of his younger brother for what will no doubt be the biggest fight of his career. The elder of the two Diaz brothers still owes $75,000 of his $100,000 fine to the Nevada State Athletic Commission stemming from the suspension they handed down to him — and later reduced greatly after a lot of public pressure — for a controversial positive marijuana test he had for his 2015 fight against MMA legend Anderson Silva.

“Nick’s the master ninja in this whole sh*t. He’s the best fighter in the world. So if I can get him there, that’s the best thing. But they won’t leave him alone, so hopefully we can get him in. I hope so, and either way it’s going to be all good. He’s here to represent for me, just like I’m always there to represent for him.”

Finally, the subject of the payday Diaz will receive for his second fight with the UFC’s biggest star in what will likely be the biggest PPV event in company history came up.

While Diaz will undoubtedly be receiving the single biggest payday in his storied MMA career on Saturday night, he still isn’t satisfied. Diaz stayed true to his original form when addressing the subject, giving a very Diaz Brothers-type of response — short and sweet.

When asked how big the payday would be, Diaz simply responded, “Less than I deserve.”

On Thursday, UFC President Dana White spoke TMZ Sports about the fallout from the wild scene that unfolded between Conor McGregor and Team Nate Diaz at the final official UFC 202 pre-fight press conference in Las Vegas, Nevada this past Wednesday.

White explained that both McGregor, Diaz and anyone else that can be linked to the incident are not going to walk away unscathed. White the UFC won’t be personally punishing either fighter, White pointed out that the company will be doing what they’re supposed to in this kind of a situation, which is turn it over to the commission that is sanctioning the event, which in this case is the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

“They’re both getting punished,” White told the popular celebrity-gossip website. “What everybody’s got to understand is we’re overseen by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. I guarantee both of these guys are gonna get massive fines and there’s probably going to be a hearing after the fight. There could be suspensions, community service, it’s gonna be ugly.”

From there White dropped a bomb as he pointed out that he has heard talk that someone was injured during the incident on Wednesday, which saw McGregor and Diaz hurling bottles of water and cans of Monster Energy Drink across opposite sides of the theater, with tons of fans in between them for any items that fell short.

While White didn’t outright confirm anything, he did speak as if a lawsuit is already in the works, and that McGregor and Diaz might end up paying a lot more than they thought — if they were thinking at all — when they made the decisions they chose.

“The word is in this thing somebody was injured,” said White. “So there’s going to be a lawsuit. Who knows how it’s all going to play out. Somebody’s filing a lawsuit. The wheels are already in motion on it.”

As is typically the case in any kind of brawl or physical incident, there are always those who are quick to assume that it was staged by the promotion to generate additional interest in the event.

White made it clear that in the case of Wednesday’s wild scene in Las Vegas, everything fans saw go down was all too real and McGregor and Diaz will probably find that out soon as well.

“It was 100-percent real. If you’re going to come up with something staged, throwing cans and bottles in a public place is probably one of the dumbest things you could come up with. It’s going to cost them both a lot of money, a lot of headache and hassle. They’re both in big trouble.”

On Thursday, UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor appeared as a guest on “The Herd” and reiterated the points he made last weekend about WWE Superstar John Cena during his Las Vegas Q&A event (watch a full video archive here).

While speaking with Nick Wright, who has been filling in for regular show host Colin Cowherd, “The Notorious” one again took aim at the WWE Superstar, using his popular “You Can’t See Me” catchphrase and bright-colored ring attire as ammunition.

“I spoke the truth,” McGregor said when asked if he thinks up his trash-talk ahead of time or simply says what’s on his mind. “He is wearing a luminous orange t-shirt, he is 40 years of age and he’s waving his hand in front of his face talking like nobody can see him, but you can see him right there. He’s a … I mean, I simply go in and speak the truth and that’s it.”

McGregor also spoke about showing up to the UFC 202 press conference in Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday before again addressing the crazy bottle-throwing incident that broke out after his opponent for this Saturday’s pay-per-view, Nate Diaz, walked out during the middle of the event.
