Breaking news just released that Nate Marquardt has been released by the UFC.

According to UFC President Dana White, Marquardt not only failed his medicals, he (adding insult to injury), “is out of this fight, and out of the main event on Versus, (and) he will no longer be with the UFC.”

It’s an extremely dire career ending consequence for Marquardt’s failure to make the 170-pound weight ceiling. More news will be released as to the exact details regarding the release of the former “King of Pancrase.”

As more information is released regarding Marquardt’s future as a mixed martial artist, the future of Rick Story is also affected by Dana White’s decision.

Rick “The Horror” Story has been riding a tremendous wave of momentum. With victories in six of his last seven fights, the expectation by Story’s camp with a victory over Marquardt would have been a future title shot against UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre.

UFC 130 in May of 2011 introduced “The Horror” to the masses of fight fans as Story dominated the very popular and extremely talented Thiago Alves.

Utilizing his wrestling background, dirty boxing skills, and a solid chin, Story captured a unanimous decision victory over the one-time Brazilian championship title contender.

With Marquardt’s release, Story will now face Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman.

Brenneman, a career 13-2 fighter, debuted in the UFC in 2010.

A solid fighter with an exceptional wrestling pedigree, “The Spaniard” is working diligently to balance out his skill-set inside the Octagon.

No disrespect to Charlie Brenneman, but a victory over “The Spaniard” does not carry the same leverage as a victory over Nate Marquardt.

Additionally, the development of Rick Story’s overall fight game will not be on stage tomorrow evening.

The necessary talent to defeat the experience, skill-set, and overall talent of a Nate Marquardt may not be equally necessary to defeat a Charlie Brenneman.

In short, the skills portrayed by Story in his fight with Thiago Alves should defeat Brenneman.

His game plan will be similar to that during his victory over Alves. Successful takedowns, dirty boxing, and an aggressive pace should secure a victory for Story.

I commend Brenneman for accepting this fight on late notice. And I also commend Story for fulfilling his expectations for this main event matchup at UFC Live 4 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In the end, however, the inability of Nate Marquardt to make the necessary weight has not only cost “The Great” his career with the UFC, a victory by Story in tomorrow’s main event will not catapult “The Horror’s” career into the upper echelon of the UFC welterweight division.

I welcome your comments.

UFC on Versus 4: Nate Marquardt Has Been Released from the UFC

Bleacher Report’s Dale De Souza:

Dana White announced today that not only did former UFC Middleweight contender Nate “The Great fail his medicals in order to compete against Rick Story at tomorrow’s UFC on Versus in Pittsburgh next weekend, but he has also been released from the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Why was he released?

What did he do to fail the medicals?

Did he aggravate Dana White in any way?

Nobody knows the answers at this time, although theories are already circulating without any confirmed statements from any party involved.

Had this not have happened, Marquardt would have been looking at his first fight since a November loss to Yushin Okami at UFC 122 in Germany.

And Now He’s Fired: Nate Marquardt … Wait, What?

Nate Marquardt Free CagePotato

We blame ourselves.

Well holy shit. Word came out today that Nate Marquardt was having a bad day: he’d failed his medical clearances for his main event fight against Rick Story at tomorrow night’s UFC For Free (or whatever they’re calling it now). There weren’t a lot of details, but his management said it “only temporary” and that “Nate’s future is at welterweight.”

Marquardt’s day turned significantly worse just an hour later, when Dana Tweeted a terse video confirming that Marquardt was donezo:

“I’m sure you heard that Nate Marquardt is out. It’s true. He failed his medicals. Not only is he out of this fight, and out of the main event on Versus, he will no longer be with the UFC.”

WOW. We’re not ones to speculate, but it’s pretty obvious that BigDaddyWhite is pissed, like he’s holding the fighter responsible for some misdeed.

Oh and by the way, Marquardt will be replaced by Charlie Brenneman, who had originally been slated to fight TJ Grant. Grant pulled out of the bout three days ago due to illness, leaving Brenneman without a dance partner.

Feel free to let your imaginations run wild in the comments, and we’ll update you as soon as we hear something from Marquardt.

Dana White announced today that not only did former UFC Middleweight contender Nate “The Great” fail his medicals in order to compete against Rick Story at tomorrow’s UFC on Versus in Pittsburgh next weekend, but he has also been released from the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Why was he released?

Did he aggravate Dana White in any way?

Nobody knows the answers at this time, although theories are already circulating without any confirmed statements from any party involved.

Rumors did circulate before the shocking news of Marquardt’s termination that the doctor’s deemed it unsafe for Marquardt to try and cut any more weight than what he had cut already in preparation for Story, who replaced an injured Anthony Johnson.

Had this not have happened, Marquardt would have been looking at his first fight since a UFC 128 unanimous decision win over Dan Miller–a win that helped Marquardt rebound from a November loss to Yushin Okami at UFC 122 in Germany.

Prior to that loss, Marquardt had racked up victories over the likes of Demian Maia, Rousimar Palhares, Wilson Gouveia and Martin Kampmann, wile losing in setbacks to Chael Sonnen, Thales Leites, and current UFC Middleweight monarch Anderson Silva.

Unknown is the direction in which Marquardt will go from here, but for now we know for certain one little fact:

Wherever he goes from here, it definitely will not lead him to a rematch with Anderson SIlva anytime soon.

Nate Marquardt Withdraws From UFC Live Event

Nate Marquardt was scheduled to make his welterweight debut on Sunday, June 26, but it now seems that will have to wait as MMAunkie.com is reporting that Marquardt has withdrawn from the event just hours before weigh-ins were scheduled to take place.

Marquardt was scheduled to face off against rising star Rick Story in the main event on Sunday night from Pittsburgh, PA’s Consol Energy Center.

MMAJunkie reports that the following statement was issued from Marquardt’s camp, “Nate is really disappointed. He really was looking forward to making his welterweight debut, and he plans to be back in there as soon as possible.”

Story who was a replacement himself on the fight card, taking Anthony Johnson’s spot against Marquardt, will now face off against Charlie Brenneman.

The UFC has had a rough go as of late with main card fighters withdrawing from fights, most due to injury. Brock Lesnar, Jon Jones, Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard, BJ Penn and Jon Fitch were all forced from recent and upcoming cards.
