Welterweight gatekeeper Neil Magny delivered an early entry for Comeback of the Year at UFC 297.
Stepping into enemy territory against Canadian fan favorite Mike Malott, things looked dire for Magny in the early going as he ate a series of brutal calf kicks in the opening round. Things did not improve in the second with ‘Proper’ controlling the action on the ground following a successful takedown attempt. Malott managed to mount Magny and reigned down a series of strikes. Magny’s defense allowed him to survive the onslaught and make it out of the round.
Clearly behind on the scorecards, Magny pushed the pace in the third, pressing Malott against the cage and scoring a much-needed takedown. With his opponent beginning to fatigue, Magny poured it on. Moving into mount, the ‘Haitian Sensation’ dropped a series of uncontested strikes as the clock continued to tick.
With only seconds left, Malott was unable to do anything other than cover up and attempt to absorb the strikes Magny was delivering. That was enough for the referee to step in and call for the stoppage with only 15 seconds to go in the contest.
Official Result: Neil Magny def. Mike Malott via TKO (ground and pound) at 4:45 of Round 3.

Improving to 13-0 tonight on the main card of UFC 292, Portmarnock contender, Ian Machado Garry forced multiple knockdowns throughout the three round limit of his showdown with the veteran, Neil Magny, landing a series of punishing calf kicks en route to a thoroughly one-sided unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-24) victory at the TD Garden, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Machado Garry, who entered tonight’s main card debut on a pay-per-view off the back of a stunning first round high-kick and strikes TKO win over Daniel Rodriguez at UFC Nashville back in April of last year, will likely crack the welterweight top-10 rankings come next week off the back of tonight’s performance.
The Dubliner managed to land his sixth consecutive victory since landing in the UFC back in 2021 in tonight’s success against Magny, dropping the division’s most winningest fighter on multiple occasions throughout their main card pairing, hammering home a slew of nasty and punishing low kicks.
Beckoning the Illionis native back to his feet in a pairing which certainly left no love lost, Ian Machado Garry would switch his attention to former two-time welterweight championship challenger, Stephen Thompson, calling for a main event bout with the Simponsville native off the back of his win against Magny.

Every since breaking into the 170lbs’s top-15 win a win over Daniel Rodriquez, Garry’s already high confidence seems have take an even bigger leap. Earlier in the week he claimed that he was ‘carrying’ this weekend card and now believes that he will follow in the footsteps of 185lb ruler, Adedsanya.
Talking to The Schmo, Garry outlined his plan to stay as active as possible, much like ‘Styebedner’ has done since entering the UFC
“I wanna fight again in December in Vegas… Fight four times this year, fight three ranked opponents. I want to prove that I am just legit, I am here, I am active, I am the new era,” Garry said. “Fighting is so short. It’s such a short window. I’m showing everyone that it can be done my way, it can be done the right way, and I can be so elite and so active.
“If you look at someone like Israel Adesanya, he’s fighting as much as he can, as constant as he can.I believe I’m going to be doing the exact same thing; rinse, repeat. Every time, we go again, we go again, we go again, and I’m just gonna keep getting my hand raised.” (H/T MMANews)
Ian Garry Vs. Neil Magny
Originally set to face Geoff Neal, Garry will now face Neil Magny this weekend after his original opponent had to withdraw due to injury. On paper, this will be Garry’s toughest test to date career, facing someone who has over three times the amount of fights as him.
Magny is a perennial contender and has been mixing it with the UFC’s best for over a decade, holding wins over the likes of Hector Lombard, Carlos Condit and Johny Hendricks.
Garry is coming off the best showing of his five fights with the promotion, head kicking and stopping Rodriguez in the first round. At just 25-year-old, Garry is far from the finished prospect, but Magny has proved time and time again that he is able to fend off rising contenders.
