Jon Jones has once again tested positive for the metabolite of banned steroid turinabol that landed him a 15-month suspension.

“Bones” is slated to defend his light heavyweight championship against Anthony Smith this weekend (Sat., March 2, 2019). Earlier today the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) released five of Jones’ drug tests ahead of the pay-per-view (PPV). Jones tested positive twice for M3 metabolite for turinabol. His other three tests came back clean. A final USADA drug test’s results are pending.

Jones initially tested positive for turinabol at UFC 217 following his third-round head-kick knockout win over Daniel Cormier. After serving a 15-months suspension, the substance continued to be found in Jones’ system, but it was determined it was a “pulsing” effect from his initial ingestion.

The controversy was so rampant UFC 232 needed to be relocated from Nevada to California in order to allow Jones to get licensed to fight against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232. The NSAC later licensed Jones after a lengthy hearing.

The NSAC said Sports Medicine and Research Laboratory (SMRTL) lab director Dr. Daniel Eichner declared that Jones’ tests show “no evidence” that a banned substance had been re-administered. There is also no evidence that Jones has an unfair competitive advantage due to the presence of the metabolite heading into UFC 235.

That was detailed in the statement released by the NSAC on the matter. Check it out via ESPN’s Chamatkar Sandhu here:

Dillon Danis reacts after the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) suspended and fined the Conor McGregor teammate.

The sanctions came for Danis’ involvement in the post-UFC 229 pay-per-view (PPV) brawl in October. The NSAC handed Danis a seven-month suspension and $7,500 fine. He took to Twitter shortly after the news to offer up his reaction. Here’s what the Bellator MMA fighter had to say:

“7 months and 7500$ for defending myself it is what it is fuck it at least i got him with that two piece and a biscuit”

Danis’ suspension is retroactive to October 6, 2018, meaning he’s eligible to fight after May 6th. He currently holds a 1-0 professional mixed martial arts (MMA) record. Danis submitted Kyle Walker in the first round of their fight at Bellator 198 in April. He isn’t the only one who was punished for the UFC 229 altercation.

McGregor received a six-month suspension and $25,000 fine. Khabib took the worst financial hit with a $500,000 fine and nine-month suspension. His teammates, Zubaira Tukhugov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, who were also involved, were each suspended a year and received $25,000 fines.

He’s eligible to fight again in July, but Khabib has stated he will sit out the entire time his friends are suspended.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is truly loyal to his brothers and teammates.

UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier revealed in a recent interview on “The MMA Hour” that, not only is Khabib prepared to sit out until his teammates’ suspensions are also up, but he’ll also be paying their Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) fines (via MMA Fighting):

“I think that Khabib is doing the most honorable thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” Cormier said. “Not many guys will pay the fine, the 500 grand, also pay the fines of your teammates and brothers. He’s paying their money too. Whatever they fine [Abubakar and Tukhugov], he’s gonna pay it too.

“Those are his brothers. They were acting to help him, I guess. They’re suspended longer, he will sit with them. That’s one thing about those guys and their lifestyle and their community is that they are family at the highest level and what he’s doing is so honorable. Not many people would do that.

“He’s doing it with the idea that even if they take his title, it does not mean more to him than standing next to his brothers. It doesn’t get any better than that. I appreciate it. I do think the fine was steep. Whatever. He also said that he’s not gonna fight there anymore. He’s very firm in his approach, he’s very firm in what he wants to convey to the world.

“I’m very proud of him. I’m proud of the man that Khabib has become from the moment he walked into AKA to who he is today, I’m very proud of him.”

Following his fourth-round submission win over Conor McGregor at UFC 229 in October, Khabib jumped the Octagon and attacked McGregor cornerman Dillon Danis. This set off a huge brawl between both teams, inside and outside the Octagon.

Khabib was given a nine-month suspension and $500,000 fine for starting the incident. His teammates, Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov, who attacked Conor McGregor, were suspended for one-year each, and also received $25,000 fines. As for McGregor, he was suspended six months and received a $50,000 fine.

“The Eagle” is expected to sit out until his brothers are also allowed to return to fighting action again. He has also suggested he’s done fighting in Las Vegas.

Punishments have now been issued out to all involved in the post-UFC 229 brawl.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) issues out fines and suspensions to Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and Khabib’s teammates, Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov, for their involvements. While UFC President Dana White believes the NSAC was a little too harsh on his lightweight champion, he fully agrees with the sanctions handed out to Abubakar and Tukhugov (via MMA News):

“We’re working on that right now with him,” White said. “The one thing I absolutely agree with the athletic commission on that one.

“Bad enough the fighters are in there fighting, you cannot have the corner men jumping in and fighting and all the things that went on leading up to that fight with the corner and their teammates. That can never happen.”

Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov were each given one-year suspensions and $25,000 in fines. Khabib was given a whopping $500,000 fine along with a nine-month suspension for sparking the entire ordeal. As for McGregor, he will pay $50,000 and serve a six-month suspension.

Khabib has said he will sit out along with his teammates as they serve their suspensions. If that’s the case, the 155-pound champ will miss most of 2019. It’s unknown who “The Eagle” will fight upon his return, but Tony Ferguson seems like the most deserving candidate of the bunch.

As for McGregor, a fight with Donald Cerrone is really picking up steam as of late.

This week, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) handed out sanctions to three of the UFC’s biggest stars.

Those being UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor, and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. During the hearings, the NSAC made some interesting suggestions, to say the least. One of those being potentially sanctioning trash talking, which is believed to have fueled the post-fight brawl between Team McGregor and Team Khabib at UFC 229.

During the UFC 235 press conference yesterday (Thurs. January 31, 2019), White was asked about the possibility. White called the proposal “unconstitutional” (via MMA News):

“I think it’s crazy, I think it’s insane, I think it’s unconstitutional,” said White. “These guys get into a cage, they can punch each other in the face, they can knock each other unconscious, they can choke each other, but they can’t say mean things to each other.”

In recent years, trash talking has become the norm in promoting fights. The trend really kicked off with the likes of Chael Sonnen and Conor McGregor, who took things to WWE-style heights. However, after how intense things got after UFC 229 in October, perhaps the NSAC could seriously look at sanctioning trash talk leading up to fights.
