With contract negotiations still ongoing, Fedor Emelianenko will not be a part of Strikeforce’s January 29 event, a Strikeforce representative has confirmed to MMA Fighting.

A match pitting Emelianenko against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in San Jose, California on that date had been proposed as a possibility by several news outlets, but it’s not going to happen, according to Strikeforce director of communications Mike Afromowitz.

Rhadi Ferguson — four-time Judo national champion, 2004 Olympic Judo competitor, BJJ black belt, American Top Team strength-and-conditioning coach, Doctor of education, and cousin of Kimbo Slice — is about to make his televised MMA debut. After picking up two first-round TKO victories this year in southern regional leagues, Ferguson has been signed to the Strikeforce light-heavyweight roster, and will make his first appearance on the main card of Strikeforce Challengers: Woodley vs. Saffiedine, January 7th in Nashville. His opponent will be 1-0 Canadian rookie Ion Cherdivara, whose list of credentials isn’t nearly as long as Dr. Rhadi’s.

Robbie Lawler knocks out Matt Lindland. When Strikeforce attempted to put on a middleweight title tournament in Houston to fill the belt vacated by Jake Shields, Robbie Lawler figured he was only one night and two wins away from having a piece of hardware again.

But because of commission rules, the one-night tourney couldn’t take place, and instead Strikeforce put the 185-pound strap around the waist of Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in August when he beat Tim Kennedy.

Though Lawler told MMA Fighting last month before his fight with Matt Lindland that his lack of opportunities with Strikeforce following the collapse of EliteXC, where he was middleweight champion, was frustrating, he said when it comes to the middleweight title picture, he thinks of himself as “just one of the guys.”

He doesn’t have to worry about that distinction anymore. After a 50-second knockout of Matt Lindland in St. Louis earlier this month, sources close to Lawler’s camp confirmed to MMA Fighting that Lawler will get a shot at Souza’s middleweight title. And on Saturday, a source close to Strikeforce confirmed to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani on Saturday that the bout will take place on the promotion’s Jan. 29 card at the HP Pavilion in its home base of San Jose, Calif.

Dominick Cruz destroyed Scott Jorgensen at WEC 53, winning an easy unanimous decision to defend his World Extreme Cagefighting bantamweight title and enter the UFC as its first bantamweight champion.

“I had a chip on my shoulder because a lot of people didn’t believe in me,” Cruz said. “Now, I think people believe.”

Cruz, who improved to 17-1, is likely to face Urijah Faber in the first UFC bantamweight title fight. Faber is the only man ever to defeat Cruz, and Cruz said he wants a shot at revenge.

“I’m ready to fight Urijah,” Cruz said. “Let’s do it.”

Anthony Pettis brought the WEC promotion to an end in style on Thursday night, using one of the most incredible kicks in the history of the sport to seal the victory against Ben Henderson at WEC 53.

The kick all but defies description: Pettis jumped into the air, pushed off the fence with his foot and landed an incredible head kick at the end of the fifth round, putting an emphatic ending on his unanimous decision victory. The kick looked like something out of a martial arts movie, but Pettis said it’s something he and his coach have been working on.

“Duke Roufus, we practice that all the time,” Pettis said. “I’ve got 10 more of those kicks coming when I’m in the UFC. How do you like that to end the WEC?”
