MONTREAL — Canada may be known as the “Great White North” to many, but when UFC officials look at the vast North American country on a map, they only see green.
Upon the promotion’s first trip to Canada in 2008, they promptly shattered the North American MMA attendance record, with 21,390 fans paying over $5 million to witness Georges St. Pierre recapturing the UFC welterweight title. That number was eventually topped at another Montreal show, and now it’s expected to fall again at Saturday night’s UFC 124 when St. Pierre takes on Josh Koscheck.
Neither the gate nor attendance records will last very long. UFC’s director of Canadian operations Tom Wright says the company’s Ontario debut at Toronto Rogers Centre next April will soon be the record-holder.

Josh Koscheck‘s appearance on ESPN Wednesday morning was a good example of the right way for a fighter to sell his upcoming fight to an audience that might be on the fence about watching it, as he promised in a SportsCenter interview to deliver the kind of exciting finish that casual fans are hoping to see when they decide whether to buy a pay-per-view.
“I believe that I’m going to win this fight,” Koscheck said. “I’m going to knock Georges St. Pierre out, either in Round 2 or 3.”
Koscheck has spent plenty of time talking to the MMA media in the lead-up to this fight, but those interviews aren’t as important to the UFC’s bottom line: If you’re an MMA fan, you’re going to buy UFC 124 whether you see a Koscheck interview or not. Much more important is the kind of interview like Koscheck had on SportsCenter, where he was talking to fans who don’t regularly watch the UFC.

After making quick work of Aaron Wilkinson in his UFC debut on Saturday, Cody McKenzie won’t waste any time getting back in the cage.
The cast member of Season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter” will step in to face Yves Edwards at the UFC’s Fight for the Troops event at Fort Hood, Texas, on Jan. 22. He’ll take the place of Melvin Guillard, who now moves up to fight Evan Dunham after Kenny Florian was forced to withdraw with an injury. The McKenzie news was first reported by MMA Junkie, and MMA Fighting has confirmed the lightweight’s participation in the fight with sources close to his camp.

As first reported by MMA Junkie, Japanese MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba will return to action on New Year’s Eve at Dynamite!! 2010, where he’ll challenge Marius Zaromskis for DREAM’s welterweight title. Though the 41-year-old vet has generally competed as a middleweight, he’ll be dropping to the lighter division following back-to-back losses against Ralek Gracie and Jason Miller.
The match will also serve as a comeback attempt for Zaromskis, who’s coming off of a disastrous Strikeforce run this year which saw him suffer first-round knockouts against Nick Diaz and Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, then eye-poke his way into a six-second no-contest against Waachim Spiritwolf last month. Zaromskis went 4-0 under the DREAM banner in 2009, with three of those wins coming via head-kick knockout.
As of now, the only other fights booked for this year’s Dynamite!! card are a featherweight title fight between Bibiano Fernandes and Hiroyuki Takaya, and a lightweight feature between Josh Thomson and Tatsuya Kawajiri. Shinya Aoki, Melvin Manhoef, and Gegard Mousasi are also reported for the event, but their fights haven’t been finalized. But hey, the show’s not for another three weeks. Plenty of time.

TOKYO — Pancrase‘s penultimate event of the year at Differ Ariake on Sunday featured three title fights in which all participants had met in the ring before.
Light heavyweight King of Pancrase Ryo Kawamura made a small step towards redeeming himself from his embarrassing knockout loss to Yuji Sakuragi in September as he managed to fight to a tense majority draw in the rematch for the belt.
Yuki Kondo was looking for redemption as he dropped a unanimous decision to Wajutsu Keishukai RJW’s Rikuhei Fujii in Cage Force back in September, but it was spoiled as Fujii again outworked the 85-fight veteran on the feet and on the canvas to claim Kondo’s crown.
In the fight of the night, current flyweight King of Pancrase Kiyotaka Shimizu and former champ Mitsuhisa Sunabe fought to an entertaining split draw in their rubber match. Sunabe pushed the action early and scored well with strikes while Shimizu came home strong to even the score and retain his crown.
