Watson then addressed the accusations after UFC fans and Reddit users pointed out a ‘Justin Watson’ that was among the accounts that Montaño followed on Instagram. In the comments under a post by MMA Island, the man in question spoke out on the incident.
“Always two sides to a story y’all and trust me Nicco and the rest of the world should probably sober up,” Watson commented.
After this comment, he was asked to elaborate by one fan in the thread.
“Nothing really to explain,” Watson said. “Cops were involved, they investigated, nobody got arrested. It’s terrible that she went to the hospital. My only explanation is there are two sides to a story so don’t get consumed with an assumption or a biased opinion.”
It’s important to point out that Watson hasn’t been officially charged with anything after the alleged incident and the investigation into what exactly happened is still ongoing.
Montaño earned the UFC inaugural women’s flyweight title after defeating Roxanne Modafferi on The Ultimate Fighter: Season 26. Montaño was supposed to defend her belt against Valentina Shevchenko but was stripped of the title after missing weight.
Montaño hasn’t competed since her loss to Julianna Peña at bantamweight in 2019. She is still planning on a potential return to MMA in 2022 at featherweight.

Montano was also recently in the headlines after publicly criticizing a documentary film made about her that briefly showed her nude. The film “Warrior Spirit” is about Montano’s story as the first Native American UFC champion and her series of harsh weight cuts while competing in the promotion.

The filmmaker behind former UFC flyweight champ Nicco Montano’s “Warrior Spirit” documentary has agreed to blur out a brief moment of nudity during the film.
Montano was the UFC’s inaugural flyweight champion and first Native American champion in the promotion’s history. She earned the belt by defeating Roxanne Modafferi on The Ultimate Fighter: 26 but was stripped ahead of her first scheduled defense against Valentina Shevchenko after failing to make weight.
Montano has had a well-documented history of weight misses in the UFC, and she felt compelled to make a documentary based on what FUC fighters have to go through leading up to a fight. However, Montano was quickly not happy with the film’s production after the production crew failed to blur a brief moment of nudity while changing clothes during a brutal weight cut.
After Montano protested the film and criticized the filmmakers for the debacle, the crew agreed to blur the brief moment of nudity.
Nicco Montano’s UFC Career Fell Apart Due To Multiple Weight Cutting Misses
“Warrior Spirit” has already won numerous awards from the Albuquerque Film and Entertainment Festival this year. At 32, it’s unclear if Montano’s fighting career is completely over or just in a brief hiatus.
Montano last competed in the octagon against Julianna Pena at UFC Fight Night 155, losing to the fellow TUF alum by a unanimous decision. She was supposed to fight in July but missed the bantamweight limit by nearly seven pounds.
In total, Montano has had six fights canceled in the UFC due to her weight misses. She’s also had three other instances in which the opponent has missed weight and prompted the withdrawal of the bout from a card.
It’s uncertain as to whether or not Montano will eventually return to MMA, but for now, she wants to bring light to the ongoing debate surrounding weight cutting in the UFC and the sport in general.

During a recent interview, Montaño criticized the “Warrior Spirit” filmmakers for showing her exposure during a brutal weight cut included in the documentary. Now, filmmaker Landon Dyksterhouse will agree to blur the shot in question to relieve the controversy.
The documentary has received numerous awards since its debut at the Sept. 24 Albuquerque Film and Music Experience festival. The purpose of the film is to show how world-class athletes such as Montaño have to deal with dangerous weight cutting in MMA.
Montaño earned the UFC’s inaugural women’s flyweight title after defeating Roxanne Modafferi at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale. She was then slated to face Valentina Shevchenko for her first title defense but was stripped of the belt after failing to make championship weight.
Nicco Montaño Had Six Fights Canceled Due To Her Weight Cuts
In total, Montaño had six of her scheduled UFC fights canceled due to her failing to make weight. After an attempt to move up to 135 pounds that failed this past July, she was cut from the UFC roster.
Outside of her TUF victory, Montaño only had one other recorded fight in the UFC; a loss at bantamweight to Julianna Peña at UFC Fight Night 155. Before signing with the UFC, she enjoyed moderate success in smaller promotions such as King of the Cage and HD MMA.
