With UFC 209 coming up on March 4, many were hoping either one or both of the Diaz brothers to fight on the card. Given the significance of their Stockton area code (209), it would seem a no-brainer. Perhaps missing the boat on holding the event in Stockton, the promotion has instead opted for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the past the Diaz brothers have stated they wouldn’t fight on the same card together, so already the possibility is halved. Adding to the negative chances of seeing a Diaz on the UFC 209 card is, once again, money.

Recently Nate Diaz said he would not answer the UFC’s call for less than $20 million. Since defeating Conor McGregor at UFC 196, the younger Diaz brother has massive drawing power. This is a far cry from UFC president Dana White’s assessment of Nate not being a ‘needle mover.’ After Nick Diaz’s Nevada suspension got lifted in October, and he soon after paid the remainder of his fine, it was expected he’d be returning to the octagon. If recent reports are anything to go by, it’s far from a done deal.

Nick Diaz Where you at

Where You At Dana?

Joe Rogan first commented on Nick Diaz turning down a rematch with Robbie Lawler at UFC 209. Further discussing this point, current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley had the following to say via MMAMania.com:

“I just asked Nick. I saw Nick in a night club. We hosted a party at Hakkasan. I was with TJ and Demetrious Johnson and Cody Garbrandt hosted his party there. So I see Nick Diaz there and went up and asked him. It is not like Nick is scared of fighting you know,” Woodley said laughing. “He’s not scared to fight me or Robbie or Conor McGregor. Nick wants to get paid man. He’s held out in the past and it has worked out in his favor. He went out there and fought Anderson Silva for close to a million bucks. He knows that he pushes the needle. Plus there is a card, 209, so he understands what he is worth to that card. So I can’t knock him for that. It’s more of a situation of him wanting to get paid.”

The report also states Conor McGregor was also turned down by Nick Diaz, although an event was not listed. Woodley continues, admitting Diaz is a bigger draw in terms of popularity:

Legendary Status

“This is the honest truth man. I can sit here an act like I am Bruce Almighty but Nick Diaz is a bigger draw than me,” said Woodley. “He is a bigger name than me. Me fighting him and me wanting to fight Nick is because I recognize and realize that I am the world champion but Nick Diaz is a legend. He has had to fight the guys like Diego Sanchez, Paul Daley and Frank Shamrock. He has had to have wars with Georges and BJ Penn to get his name to where it is.

So all I am trying to do is fight the Robbie Lawler’s, fight the Nick Diaz’s , GSP’s and Conor McGregor’s so that I can become a name that enters in to the legend category. Then people will want to fight me for the same reason I want to fight Nick. That’s all it is. There is nothing personal. I respect him as a fighter.”

There you have it. Are the UFC being too tight with the purse strings, or do the Diaz brothers want too much to fight? Honestly, after fighting for so long and becoming such a huge draw, the promotion needs to pay guys like the Diaz bros. Will they? That remains to be seen.

Popular UFC welterweight Nick Diaz became a cult icon over the past 18 months. The Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu product was already famous for his gruff attitude and exciting fights, but when he took on the Nevada Commission it became a different story. After allegedly failing a drug test on the same night he passed two, Diaz’s fighting future became an uncertainty. Following his decision loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 183, a bigger fight was on the horizon. The authority of the NSAC was challenged by Diaz and his legal team, but this had massive consequences.

Nick Diaz’s lawyer seemed to pull out an air-tight defense during the hearing. The Commission was arguably presented with a large dose of reasonable doubt in the saga of Diaz’s failed drug test. Incidentally his Brazilian opponent ‘The Spider’ had failed for anabolic steroids after their fight. The NAC abused their position somewhat, handing down an archaic five-year suspension for Nick Diaz. Suddenly it looked as though Diaz was done fighting, much to the dismay of the MMA community.

Free Nick Diaz

Here is where things took a turn for the better. The support shown for Nick Diaz far surpassed the realms of mixed martial arts, even sports in general. The ‘free Nick Diaz’ campaign hit the ground running. In no time pop icons such as Cher, the entire UFC roster and stars of movie and TV were rallying for Diaz. White House petitions were signed and a GoFundMe page was set up to help Diaz pay his $165,000 fine. Although the petition was snubbed by the government who said they had no jurisdiction in the matter, the appeals were eventually heard by the NAC.

Diaz’s fine was reduced to $100K, and his suspension dropped to 18 months. Officially the suspension was over and done with on August 1, 2016, but it isn’t over yet. Due to an outstanding balance of $75K, Diaz was unable to corner his younger brother Nate at both UFC 196 & UFC 202. This is not the only issue though. As per Damon Martin, the Nevada Commission won’t let Diaz fight until the sum of his fine is settled.

What happened to the page set up to help Diaz pay his fine? Unlike the White House petition that reached 115,000 signatures, fans only managed to muster $925 to donate to Nick Diaz. That said, perhaps some of Nate’s cash from his two fights against Conor McGregor could help out?

We’ll keep you updated.

Former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit has a reputation for being an incredibly durable, exciting, high level athlete. Fighting out of Greg Jackson’s Albuquerque training facility in New mexico, the aptly named ‘Natural Born Killer’ has an immense cardio vascular capacity and mixes a unique style of striking and footwork as his primary offensive game.

After his UFC 143 interim title tilt against Nick Diaz, there was some criticism from viewers who later blasted ‘NBK’ as a ‘point fighter.’ To put things in perspective, Condit has 30 professional mixed martial arts wins, only two of which come by decision. From his 12 UFC bouts the former WEC welterweight champion has won seven ‘fight night’ bonuses, his promotional record stands at 8-4.

Condit has been out of action for six months now. He last fought in a gruelling five round affair against the champ Robbie Lawler at UFC 195, in a bout that was scored a split decision win for ‘Ruthless.’ Many fans and media members disputed the narrow decision, feeling Condit had landed enough volume to earn the victory and the championship belt, and for a while there was the possibility of an immediate rematch.

Lawler, who’s also not fought since their classic burner in January, has now been paired with Tyron Woodley for UFC 201 on July 30. Speculation on Condit’s possible retirement has swirled since that fight with ‘Ruthless’ and the former interim boss has remained pretty quiet lately.

Condit

Until today that is, as Carlos Condit gives a hint at his possible final fight for the UFC. It would certainly be a joy to see ‘The Natural Born Killer’ fight again, and fans are rallying for a rematch with Nick Diaz since the following video was released.
