UFC 137: 2 Reasons Why Diaz Will Beat Penn in Las Vegas

UFC 137—On October 29, 2011 BJ Penn will square off against Strikeforce’s Nick Diaz.

The winner will undoubtedly be in line for a title shot against the winner of GSP vs. Condit.

The 32-year-old Penn—a former welterweight and lightweight UFC champion—is trying to get one more title run under his belt before father time catches up to him.

Nick Diaz—28 years old—is coming off a 10-fight winning streak that has spanned three and a half years at Strikeforce.

Two of those years have been as Strikeforce’s welterweight champion.

Oddsmakers give a slight edge to “The Prodigy” BJ Penn for the Halloween weekend fight. However, oddsmakers are like weathermen: very knowledgeable but systematically inaccurate.

Many casual MMA fans are relatively unaware of Nick Diaz. And given that Jake Shields, a Strikeforce middleweight champ, is 1-2 in the UFC, and nowhere near title contention, many will write off yet another Strikeforce cross-over hopeful.

But in Diaz’s case, this may be a mistake.

Penn has been fighting at lightweight for three of the past four years. The jump to welterweight is somewhat recent and Penn has only seen two outings at this division. And despite an impressive early knockout of an aging Matt Hughes, Penn is relatively untested at welterweight.

He lost two-straight decisions to a diminutive Frankie Edgar at lightweight, and barely squeaked out a draw against welterweight Jon Fitch in early 2011.

He has not shown the steam roller dominance that marked his earlier, championship days.

In all likeliness, Penn is going to be a tough gatekeeper at either welter or lightweight until he retires in the next two years.

Diaz, on the other hand, has a fairly impressive recent resume in the welterweight category. Although his wins are outside the UFC, they are against bigger, faster and stronger bomb throwers than BJ Penn.

The main reasons Diaz will walk away victorious against Penn are: chin and reach.

CHIN:

When he fought Robbie Lawler eight years ago, Diaz showed a tremendous chin. And recently he’s shown that chin to be in top form during fights against Evangelista Santos and Paul Daley. Unless BJ can take Diaz down and damage him from guard, he will not likely be rattling the Strikeforce newcomer in stand-up exchanges.

Penn’s chances on the ground are not necessarily fantastic against a Brazilian Ju Jitsu black belt such as Diaz. Not to mention that Diaz is difficult to bring down in the first place, and works well from the back.

Unless Penn can do to Diaz’s chin what no one else has been able to do recently, he’ll have to resort to submissions or out-pointing the Stockton resident.

REACH:

Diaz is 6′ 1″ and has a 74 inch reach. Penn stands 5′ 9″ and sports a 70″ reach.

And this is only one dimension of Diaz’s reach advantage. It is his reach “style” that has proved problematic to even well-seasoned strikers.

In victories over a bevy of contenders who are effective boxing-style fighters, Diaz’s unorthodox southpaw stance, distracting arm-waving and odd-angled punches have overwhelmed many confident strikers.

BJ Penn has leaned heavily on his boxing abilities over the past three years, not unlike the morph we have seen from Rampage Jackson, who was far more diverse during his Pride days but found early UFC success by accentuating his strengths as a boxer. This comfort zone eventually made him predictable and beatable.

Most likely, a stand up war with Diaz will not work and Penn will have to get busy elsewhere.

Prediction: Diaz by third round TKO (strikes).

UFC 137 Fight Card: BJ Penn Was Surprised About Fight with Nick Diaz

When it was announced that Nick Diaz would not be facing Georges St-Pierre at UFC 137 and Carlos Condit would take the place of Diaz, it caught the entire MMA world off-guard.

That includes former UFC welterweight and lightweight champion, B.J. Penn.

“I’m in the middle of training camp,” Penn said in a video series sponsored by RVCA. “I’m up here in California training for the last 45 days, preparing for the fight, and they pulled a switch on me without even letting me know.”

The move came out of nowhere after Diaz seemingly was in a bad spot with the UFC. After the fight was announced, Penn checked to see if the switch was legal in his bout agreement.

Penn has trained with Diaz before and the two camps checked to see if there were any alternatives after the fight had been announced.

“We tried to get different fights, because I’ve trained with Nick Diaz—I’ve used him as a training partner before—and he’s a good buddy,” said Penn. “We actually talk on the phone and hang out when we see each other.”

But with Condit facing GSP and Jon Fitch battling injuries, there weren’t options to give the two fighters the momentum to earn a title fight with Condit or GSP.

“We talked about it and we tried to find different opponents at the end of the day there [aren’t] too many guys out there,” Penn said.

UFC 137 Main card

Welterweight Championship: Georges St.Pierre vs Carlos Condit

Condit is without a doubt the most dangerous opponent St. Pierre has fought yet, but I think GSP is going to win this fight easier than most people think. Condit is a guy who has fantastic armbars and devastating standup. What is probably going to happen though is that GSP is going to confuse Condit with takedown fakeouts and overwhelm with a number of strikes. Then do late round takedowns and avoid the submission to secure the round. Condit wins if he gets lucky and catches GSP with punches. I don’t see a submission happening. GSP and his team are smart enough to never stay in the guard of Condit. If GSP controls from the half guard, Carlos is likely not going to get up the entire round.

GSP.

Welterweight bout: BJ Penn vs Nick Diaz

Nick Diaz. Did you think I wouldn’t pick him coming back to the UFC? Not like this fight is easy.

Heavyweight bout: Cheick Kongo vs Matt Mitrione

Mitrione is on a hot streak for sure, but I think Kongo is the more talented overall fighter. Unless it goes to the ground. Mitrione has better top control. Matt could GnP this one, while Kongo likes to win on the feet. I’m feeling Kongo here.

Heavyweight bout: Mirko Filipovi? vs Roy Nelson

I gotta go with Roy. He can take a tremendous amount of damage and put it on the other guy himself. Plus if it goes to the ground, his belly is a huge advantage.

Featherweight bout: Hatsu Hioki vs George Roop

Everytime I don’t pick this guy, he crushes his opponent. Roop.

Preliminary card (Spike TV)

Lightweight bout: Dennis Siver vs Donald Cerrone

Featherweight bout: Tyson Griffin vs Bart Palaszewski

Griffin. He will stay close to Bart all night and that is where Bart’s weaknesses are inside the grappling range. If Griffin stays on the inside he should win this one.

Preliminary card (Facebook)

Middleweight bout: Brad Tavares vs Dustin Jacoby

No pick, but Tavares has some power.

Bantamweight bout: Scott Jorgensen vs Jeff Curran

Glad to see Curran back in the UFC after a long stint outside. Jorgensen is that Guidaesque grinding wrestler and Curran has no problem fighting off his back. I can see Jorgensen taking a decision win here, but would be cool to see Curran pull off the sub.

Light Heavyweight bout: Brandon Vera vs Eliot Marshall

Vera easy.

Lightweight bout: Ramsey Nijem vs Danny Downes

Nijem

Middleweight bout: Chris Camozzi vs Francis Carmont

Camozzi seemed tough on the show.

The hype machine is in full swing for the next Ultimate Fighting Championship event, as evidenced by this UFC 137: Extended Preview video, courtesy of YouTube. This card is loaded at the top with a main event title fight between Georges St-Pierre and dangerous challenger Carlos Condit, plus a co-main event with “The Prodigy” BJ Penn taking on tough, bad boy Nick Diaz.

This video gives an in-depth preview of those two fights, as well as the main card heavyweight matchup between rising heavyweight Matt “Meat” Mitrione and French striker Cheick Kongo, which is sure to be a banging affair.

Welterweight Championship Title Fight

Georges St-Pierre vs Carlos Condit

It is no secret that Georges St-Pierre is in the midst of one of the most dominating title reigns in UFC history. He will look to dominate and win with his athletic, well-rounded style. GSP holds a 22-2 record and has not lost a fight since April 2007.

“I believe Carlos poses more problems to me that I haven’t seen. I’m gonna have to deal with a guy that has knockout power, very technical striking and a great ground game as well” St-Pierre states in the video.

“I will dictate the pace of the fight. We’ll fight my fight and I’ll take him out.”

Carlos Condit is one of the top contenders in the the division and is an extremely dangerous matchup for the champion. He is 27-5 in his career, with a well rounded 13 wins by knockout and 13 wins by submission. He is a former WEC welterweight title holder and is coming off a vicious knockout victory over Dong Hyun Kim.

“I’m hard to fight no matter what position we’re in. I’m going to beat you down physically and break you mentally, and I’m going to do that in this fight as well.”Condit said in the video.

“This is my dream. I have nothing to lose and everything to gain in this fight.”

BJ Penn vs Nick Diaz

BJ Penn is a former two-division champion in the UFC and is looking for one last shot at gaining another title before the end of his career draws near. “The Prodigy” is 16-7 in his career with 7 wins by knockout and six by submission, and he is coming off a draw with Jon Fitch in February.

“Everyone’s goal is to get to the top, and we’re gonna have to beat each other,” BJ Penn says in the video.

“Nothing surprises me with Nick Diaz.”

“This fight is the real main event of the night. This is it. BJ Penn and Nick Diaz this is a big fight.”

Nick Diaz is one of the most enigmatic beings in mixed martial arts and he is also one of the most dangerous. This is his first fight in his return to the UFC and his chance to show that he truly belongs with the sports’ elite. Diaz is 25-7 with 13 wins by knockout and eight by submission. He is on a ten fight win streak with his last win coming against Paul Daley.

“I’m better than these guys, you know. I can beat BJ Penn.”

“The thing is, if he gets in a bad spot he’s done, but if I end up in a bad spot I’m gonna get out.”

“This is all I got. This is who I am. I have no other way.”
