Sad Knockout of the Day: Murilo Rua Wrecked by Paulo Filho in Comeback Fight


“Don’t call it a comeback! No seriously, don’t – I plan on pulling out of my next fight.”

Not to be outdone by One FC, last night’s hilariously named Best of the Best event in Belem, Brazil saw Murilo Rua and Paulo Filho come out of retirement for a pointless, irrelevant rematch. On paper, it’s pretty sad and kind of scary to see Murilo Rua, who looked completely washed up in his retirement fight against Tom Watson at last year’s BAMMA 6, step in the cage for one final fight. But his opponent is Paulo Filho, so it’ll be a small miracle if the troubled Rohypnol loving Brazilian even shows up, yet alone shows up in shape and ready to fight, right? Things can’t get too ugly for Ninja, can they?

Dude…you have no idea. Rua manages to do dick before getting tagged repeatedly by Filho’s sloppy haymakers, which were eerily reminiscent of this. The fight is mercifully stopped just forty eight seconds in, yet the internet is still crying early stoppage. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m okay with letting this one end while Ninja can still brush his teeth without assistance.

And to think, at one point in time these guys were two of Pride’s best middleweights. Age can do a lot to a fighter, I guess (and drug usage probably doesn’t help either). Thanks for proving that Filho’s victory over Rua back at Pride Bushido 10 wasn’t a fluke, guys. Now please never get in the cage again.

Ten Years Later, Shogun Looks to Avenge Brother’s Loss to Henderson

On November 3, 2001, the fans at the Tokyo Dome were treated to a great fight between Dan Henderson and Murilo “Ninja” Rua at Pride 17. A decade later, Henderson will take on Ninja’s little brother Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 139.

And just because it’s been 10 full years since the Henderson-Rua fight, that doesn’t mean Shogun has forgotten. In fact, Shogun said on Wednesday that he’s been motivated during his preparation for the fight with Henderson to avenge his big brother’s split decision loss to Henderson from the Pride days.

And Rua said that watching and re-watching that fight, and discussing the fight with his brother, has helped him to formulate his game plan for his own bout with Henderson.


“Certainly that was a great fight,” Shogun said. “I watched that fight between my brother and Henderson a number of times. It was a very competitive fight. My brother is one of the people who helped me a lot with my strategy for Dan. I hope to impose my game plan, knowing it’s going to be a tough fight with a great fighter. That was a great fight and I have good memories of it.”

Henderson has even better memories, because he won — but only after a brutal battle, and only by split decision. Henderson said he expects a similarly difficult time fighting against the younger Rua.

“It was a tough fight,” Henderson said. “It was a war and I would expect the same from his brother.”

If the Henderson-Shogun fight is as good as the Henderson-Ninja fight, the fans will be the winners.

As if you needed any reminder. For whatever reason – probably psychologically rooted in our inability to look away from the scene of a car crash – the MMA media has covered the shit out of Impact FC’s rapid fire debuts in Australia during the last couple of weeks. Last Friday’s show – in which Josh Barnett crushed some can named Geronimo Something-or-other — was just a subtle aperitif before tonight’s main course, which is available on pay-per-view for all to see, beginning at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST.

Look, we’re not going to beat around the bush here. Impact FC needs you to buy this card. For evidence, look no further than the promotion’s refusal this week to buy Bob Sapp a plane ticket from Bulgaria to Sydney because it allegedly couldn’t afford it. If true, that’s not the mark of a cash-rich business, people.
