Demetrious Johnson UFC 285 Jon Jones GOAT

Former undisputed UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson has touted recently minted heavyweight champion, Jon Jones as the definitive greatest mixed martial artist of all time this week – complimenting his UFC 285 victory over Ciryl Gane.

Johnson, himself touted as one of the sports greatest ever, holds the record for most successful consecutive title defenses under the UFC banner – racking up a staggering eleven separate defenses of his undisputed flyweight throne.

Demetrious Johnson believes Jon Jones is now the certified sport GOAT

Discussing the conversation of sport greats following last weekend’s pay-per-view event, Johnson claimed that Jones’ victory over Gane – along with his esteemed success at light heavyweight, make him the undeniable greatest mixed martial artist of all time.

“I’ve had the longest consecutive title defense [record in the UFC], and I’ve also had 14 world title fights,” Demetrious Johnson told TMZ during a recent interview. “I believe he’s (Jon Jones) at 15 [straight title fight wins] now. You look at GSP (Georges St-Pierre), I think he took four years off and he fought in 2013 against Johny Hendricks. Then he came back in 2017 and beat Michael Bisping, who was a champion. You look at Anderson Silva, we’ve all done amazing things in mixed martial arts.”

“Jon Jones – what he did to Ciryl Gane Saturday night, I mean, he took him down and choked him out,” Demetrious Johnson explained. “I truly believe he could’ve done that at 205 [pounds]. The one thing that separates those guys from me, those guys gone up and competed and won a world championship in a different weight class, where I haven’t. Henry Cejudo’s done it, Jon’s done it, Randy Couture’s done it, the list just goes on and on of all the guys who have done it, and that’s one thing I haven’t done.”

Slated to return in May, Johnson is booked to headline ONE Fight Night 10 as part of ONE Championship’s first fight in the United States – taking on Adriano Moraes in the pair’s championship trilogy fight in Broomfield, Colorado.

The “Wonder Boy” era has begun.

Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, saw the most heated MMA rivalry in recent ONE Championship history come to a close at ONE Fight Night 7: Lineker vs. Andrade II this past Friday, February 24.

Former ONE Bantamweight World Champion John “Hands of Stone” Lineker and #1 contender Fabricio “Wonder Boy” Andrade headlined a scintillating night of fights on Thailand’s hallowed grounds, but it was the youthful Andrade who made history in leaving with the World Title around his waist.

The Brazilian duo put on a classic over the course of four rounds, and while Lineker gave his all to subdue the reach and striking advantage of Andrade, the damage “Wonder Boy” dished onto his compatriot eventually became too much.

Following the fourth round, Lineker’s corner threw in the towel and didn’t let his charge leave the stool for the fifth and final frame, capping a magical performance for his countryman.

Not only did Andrade give the previously vacant crown a home, but the 25-year-old also became the first man to finish “Hands of Stone” in nearly 10 years. Upon attaining gold, an overwhelmed “Wonder Boy” and Lineker showcased true sportsmanship, embracing one another with the utmost respect.

The co-main event saw Bangkok’s golden boy and ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World Champion Tawanchai PK Saenchai return to his prospective home to make the first defense of his World Title against Turkish brawler Jamal Yusupov.

Tawanchai’s homecoming couldn’t have had a sweeter outcome, as a left kick to the quad rendered “Yeniceri” unable to continue after only 49 seconds of action.

The sudden finish sent the crowd into a frenzy for their hometown hero, as the Thai left the contest unscathed and ready to return to action in the near future.

Combat sports icon Rodtang Jitmuangnon will take on ONE flyweight kickboxing champion, Superlek Kiatmoo9, as he targets multi-sport championship success.

The news of the super fight was announced by ONE president Chatri Sityodtong during a recent live Q&A on Facebook, who revealed the clash will go down on 25th March in Singapore.

Rodtang and Superlek appeared destined to clash in 2022, during the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix. However, Rodtang would be forced to pull out of the Grand Prix due to weight issues. Despite these complications, ‘The Iron Man’ would still have an active year, picking up wins over Joseph Lasiri and Jacob Smith in Muay Thai, as well as facing off against MMA legend Demetrious Johnson, in a highly entertaining custom rules bout.

Superlek also had an eventful 2022. ‘The Kicking Machine’ picked up 3 victories in Muay Thai, including an incredible spear elbow KO over Walter Goncalves. Check out the highlight reel worthy finish below:

Both men have already claimed a victory in 2023. Superlek claimed the vacant One flyweight kickboxing title, picking up a unanimous decision victory over Daniel Puertas. Rodtang also picked up a win in kickboxing, dominating Jiduo Yibu over three rounds.

Who do you think will come out on top? Rodtang or Superlek?

Northcutt, 26, has yet to feature since ONE Championship: Enter the Dragon back in May 2019 against kickboxing talent, Alexandre – where he suffered a devastating knockout loss inside just 29-seconds.

Sidelined for almost four years since, Sage Northcutt underwent a high-profile surgical procedure to address multiple fractures suffered in his face following the loss to the Brazilian kickboxer, limiting his activity under the ONE Championship banner.

Sage Northcutt books first MMA outing in almost 4 year period

However, according to an initial report from Sports Illustrated, Sage Northcutt, a native of Sacramento, has booked his first outing in almost four years in the form of a clash against the 10-2, Mujtaba on an upcoming May 5. card.

11-3 as a professional, Northcutt made significant waves during his three-year tenure under the scrutiny of the UFC, debuting with a first round knockout win over Francisco Trevino at UFC 192 in May 2015.

Establishing a 6-2 promotional records during his eight-fight stint under the Dana White-led banner, Northcutt exited the UFC in the midst of an impressive three-fight winning run – including victories over the trio of Michel Quinones, Thibault Gouti, and Zak Ottow.

Prior to his third professional loss against Alexandre, Northcutt suffered just two losses professionally against both Byran Barberena, and UFC alum, Mickey Gall – both coming via submission.

The May 5. event featuring Northcutt will mark ONE Championship’s first venture into the United States – with undisputed flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson set to meet with Adriano Moraes in the pair’s title trilogy bout in Colorado

Demetrious Johnson UFC ONE Championship

Former undisputed UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson has revealed he earned a total of $60,000 for his rematch knockout win over the now-retired, Joseph Benavidez back in 2013 – earning a measly $30,000 to show, and a further $30,000 to win.

Johnson, a native of Kentucky, competed under the banner of the UFC between 2011 and 2018, and in that time, managed to land a promotional-best, 11 consecutive successful flyweight title defenses.

In the time since his departure from the UFC, which came in the form of a monumental ONE Championship trade with Ben Askren, Johnson has managed to land an impressive 4-1 promotional record in Singapore – including a flyweight Grand Prix win and a further undisputed title victory.

Demetrious Johnson comments on his payscale during his time with the UFC

Reflecting on his tenure with the UFC, Johnson detailed his fighter pay issue during his time with the Dana White-led promotion, revealing he made just a total $60,000 for his title defense with Benavidez back in 2013.

“When I fought Dominick Cruz, I was fighting for $14,000 and $14,000,” Demetrious Johnson said on his YouTube channel. “Lost to Dominick Cruz, I made $14,000. Then I was about to fight Eddie Wineland, but that didn’t go through so I fought Ian McCall in Australia. I was still on that same contract. And then, I got a new contract when I fought McCall for a second time, I think I bumped up to $20,000 (and) $20,000.”

“And then I fought Joseph Benavidez and I was still on that $20,000 (and) $20,000,” Demetrious Johnson explained. “When I fought John Dodson I made $23,000 (and) $23,000, when I fought John Moraga I probably went $26,000 (and) $26,000, and then when it was Joseph Benavidez (rematch) I think it was like $30,000 (and) $30,000.”

Comparing his payscale to that of UFC welterweight veteran, professional wrestler, CM Punk, Johnson claimed had a certain chip on his shoulder to see the paycheck the now-promotional alum was making for his second Octagon appearance.

“I’m going on my seventh or eighth title defense – you’ve got CM Punk over here and he’s making 500 bones ($500,000) and it’s his second fight in the UFC. That’s where the chip on  my should came from.”
