Conor McGregor wants to take up Oscar De La Hoya on his latest claim.

The now-retired boxer and Golden Boy Promotions founder was recently asked how a boxing match between himself and McGregor would go today.

Despite being 47, De La Hoya was confident he would come out on top and stated he would require just two rounds against the Irishman.

“Two rounds. Come on, brother. Two rounds!” De La Hoya said. “Because one thing about me, I went for the kill always. And look, Conor McGregor, I love him in the Octagon, I respect him, I watch him all the time. But the boxing ring is a whole different story. A whole different story.”

McGregor seemingly caught wind of those comments.

Having always spoken of returning to the world of boxing, the former two-weight UFC champion responded to De La Hoya.

“I accept your challenge, Oscar de la Hoya,” McGregor tweeted on Thursday.

McGregor famously made his professional debut back in 2017 when he boxed Mayweather on his way to a 10th-round TKO defeat. Despite getting outclassed, McGregor remained confident he would come away as the victor in a potential rematch.

There has also been talk of potential boxing matches with Manny Pacquiao and Paulie Malignaggi. De La Hoya could now be added to that list apparently.

What do you think of McGregor’s response?

Oscar De La Hoya believes he just needs two rounds to dispose of Conor McGregor if they met in a boxing match today.

De La Hoya — a former six-division boxing champion — retired from the sweet science in 2009 and has since exclusively been promoting fights with Golden Boy Promotions. He wasn’t particularly a fan of McGregor entering the boxing world in 2017 when he boxed Floyd Mayweather en route to a 10th-round TKO defeat.

The 47-year-old has since called for fighters in both sports to stay in their own lane. To further prove his point, he claims he just needs two rounds to defeat the Irishman if they fought today.

“Two rounds. Come on, brother. Two rounds!” De La Hoya said on the State of Combat podcast (via MMA Mania). “Because one thing about me, I went for the kill always.

“And look, Conor McGregor, I love him in the Octagon, I respect him, I watch him all the time. But the boxing ring is a whole different story. A whole different story.”

Whether McGregor can defeat a 47-year-old De La Hoya could be a debate for another day, but one thing is for sure — barring a miracle, it is highly unlikely that he defeats any top-level boxer today.

So let’s just hope that he remains in mixed martial arts for the foreseeable future.

Do you think De La Hoya would beat McGregor in a boxing match today?

Oscar De La Hoya has praised his bitter rival Dana White for his efforts to hold UFC events during the coronavirus pandemic.

De La Hoya and White have previously went back and forth exchanging some nasty insults. The Golden Boy Promotions CEO had nothing but good things to say about the UFC boss in a recent interview with CBS Sports’ “State of Combat” podcast. De La Hoya praised White for trying to get the UFC back up and running at all costs.

“I commend and respect Dana. We did have our differences. When I wanted to get involved with the MMA, I did Chuck Liddell (vs.) Tito Ortiz. It was a huge success. I dipped my toes into the water, and I experienced it. It was actually wonderful. I love the MMA.

“Dana came out and criticized me and ridiculed me and all that stuff. You know what? Dana is doing a phenomenal job in defending his sport, growing his sport, and he’s doing it big. He’s doing it great, man. I commend him.”

White tried to press ahead with UFC 249 on April 18, but the event was shut down after the governor of California Gavin Newsom asked Disney/ESPN to call it off.

The UFC have now rearranged the event which will take place in Jacksonville, Florida on May 9. They’ll quickly follow it up with two more events at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena on May 9 and May 16.

Another show is currently in the works for May 23, however, it is yet to be confirmed if it will go down at in Florida like the other cards. Tyron Woodley vs. Gilbert Burns is expected to headline the event although nothing is official yet.

Canelo Alvarez, Billy Joe Saunders postponed

Boxing superstar Saul ‘Canelo’
Alvarez was set to face British super-middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders
on May 2 in Las Vegas.

The fight although not official was due to be publicly announced next week. It would have saw the 30-year-old four-weight champion vying to win his first ‘proper’ belt in the 168lb division. The Mexican fighter previously fought and stopped another Brit in Rocky Feilding for a secondary title at the weight in 2018.

Due to the ongoing disruption
to sporting events caused by the Corona Virus pandemic boxing promotion
Goldenboy and streaming giants DAZN are assessing if the Canelo-Saunders fight will
still go ahead as planned.

Per BoxingNews24 if the fight is unable to take place on May 2, Saunders is unlikely to get the fight at a later date. That is because the sports broadcasters are hoping to see Canelo complete his trilogy with long-time rival and middleweight standout Gennady Golovkin in September. Whilst the biggest star in boxing is also believed to be scheduled to fight Ryota Murata in latter stages of 2020 or in the first quarter of 2021.

This news comes one day after Goldenboy CEO Oscar De La Hoya announced the cancellation of two of his shows scheduled for this month – including the fight between top prospect Vergil Ortiz and Samuel Vargas.  In a statement to TV partner DAZN the legendary boxer turned promoter said.

“This
morning, we were informed by the California State Athletic Commission that all
combative sports events have been cancelled for the month of March due to
concerns regarding COVID-19,” Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy
said in a press release on the cancelations. “Therefore, our March 19 and March
28 events, which were scheduled at Avalon Hollywood and the Forum respectively,
have officially been postponed. We will work with state and local officials as
well as our venue and broadcast partners to determine the best course of action
with respect to these and other upcoming events, both in California and
elsewhere.”

“The health and safety of our fighters, fans, employees, officials and partners is of the utmost importance to us, and we thank them for their support and understanding during this time. We will communicate further plans when the time is appropriate.”

Should boxing event continue behind closed doors like the UFC and Bellator?

Boxing promoter Oscar de la Hoya would not be a fan of seeing Conor McGregor return to the sweet science.

McGregor enjoyed a triumphant return to the Octagon when he defeated Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 last weekend. There has since been talk of the Irishman potentially rematching Floyd Mayweather while there’s also been discussion of a Manny Pacquiao fight as well.

However, De La Hoya believes fighters in both sports should just stay in their lane.

“I think every sport should just stay in their own lane,” De La Hoya told Fight Hub TV when asked about McGregor. “I wouldn’t mind seeing a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight again because they’re two boxers. Just stay in your own lane — I think it’s best for every sport.”

In the past, there has also been talk of Khabib Nurmagomedov boxing Floyd Mayweather. But for De La Hoya, it would be pointless as the result would not be any different to when McGregor boxed Mayweather.

“We’ve seen it once before,” he added. “Nothing’s going to change. Mayweather’s the best at what he does in boxing and an MMA fighter is not going to beat him in boxing.

“… Just stay in your own lane and we’ll all be happy. I saw the McGregor fight [vs. Cerrone]. He’s awesome at what he does in the Octagon. And I love watching fights with Pacquiao and Mayweather. Let’s just stick to our own lanes and enjoy these fights and let’s grow these sports collectively.”

It’s hard not to agree with De La Hoya.
