The Importance Of OSU Wrestling To Primitive & Modern MMA

Oklahoma State University has a rich history of producing elite-level mixed martial arts fighters and has been doing for several decades. The school’s wrestling team has long been one of the best in the country and for some reason, its athletes always seem to bet on MMA as their follow-on career.

In the late 1980s before MMA or the UFC was even a thing Don Frye and Randy Couture were teammates on the OSU wrestling team. The pair would go on to become pioneers in the sport of MMA and legends of the game.

Frye entered the UFC in its very early days when the sport lacked many of the rules we see in place today – one such rule was no weight classes. Frye won the UFC 8 tournament and the UFC 1996 tournament too. Although in those days they didn’t have a belt system he was for all intents and purposes a UFC champion and remains a fight legend.

Couture left OSU with his place in the Hall of Fame secure and went to work on achieving the same feat inside the UFC. His list of accomplishments is staggering, to say the least. ‘The Natural’ held UFC titles on six occasions. He was the first fighter to become a champion in two different weight classes and he was also the oldest ever champion when winning the heavyweight strap at 45 years old – he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2006.

In more recent times you have had guys like Johny Hendricks emerge from OSU to become UFC champions. ‘Big Rig’ won two NCAA Division I championships during his years at college where he finished with an overall wrestling record of 159 – 13. The now retired MMA fighter took to the sport like many from OSU – naturally. He had the elite level grappling base and ungodly power in his hands that made him the UFC welterweight champion.

Currently Daniel Cormier is the man flying the flag for OSU in the UFC. The 41-year-old was a standout wrestler at OSU and went on to represent the USA at the 2004 Olympics coming fourth. He was named captain for the 2008 games but was forced out due to kidney failure brought on by excessive weight cutting. Since transitioning to MMA in 2009 he has enjoyed great success and is arguably one of the greatest fighters ever. ‘DC’ won the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix just 10 fights into his professional career. He went on to join the UFC an become a dual weight champion at light-heavyweight and heavyweight, he was just the second fighter to do so.

While the OSU wrestling team has produced three UFC champions and a tournament winner it has also produced a lot of other high calibre fighters who still made a massive impact despite not reaching the lofty heights of UFC gold. Shane Roller, Jared Rosholt, Jake Rosholt Mark Munoz, Muhammed Lawal were all part of the OSU wrestling team and all went on to become world-class MMA fighters.

The Professional Fighters League (PFL) has announced some details about their first three events taking place in the playoffs of their league.

The playoffs for the second season of the league will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on October 11, 17, and 31.

These shows will be broadcast on ESPN2, ESPN+, and ESPN Deportes. The playoffs will see fighters in the six divisions have to win twice in one night in order to advance to the $1 million finals:

“We’re proud to stage the 2019 PFL Playoffs in Las Vegas, the fight capital of the world and home to major-league sports and larger-than-life entertainment events,” PFL CEO Peter Murray stated. “Our focus has been on partnering with leading brands and properties such as ESPN, and we are now excited to team with another world class organization in MGM Resorts as our playoff partner in October.

“For the first time ever in Las Vegas, MMA fans will experience fighters fighting twice in one night to reach the PFL Championship, where six elite athletes will earn their divisional championship belts and $1 million each.”

The first three events of the 2019 regular season have already taken place, while the second half of PFL’s 2019 season takes place July 11, July 25 and August 8. The show on August 8th goes down at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey, which marks to be an important show, as it will serve as the final show of the regular season.

In the main event, a heavyweight showdown will see Kelvin Tiller and Denis Goltsov inside of the cage. Satoshi Ishii vs. Rosholt will serve as the co-main event. It will stream live on the ESPN+ streaming service, with the prelims available on ESPN 2.

This is where the final regular season bouts for the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions will take place. The eight fighters from each division will then move on to the postseason where they have a chance to win the $1 million prize.

You don’t see this one every day. An amateur Russian water polo coach recently incited a massive underwater brawl when he performed a two-footed ‘Khabib jump’ on a rival player.

As you know, UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov incited an infamous brawl following his win over Conor McGregor at last October’s UFC 229. ‘The Eagle’ leaped into the crowd to confront McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis. Danis had allegedly hurled anti-Muslim slurs at Khabib, something Danis has strongly denied.

The brawl was nearly recreated in the water polo game between Moskvich and Kazan. In the wild scene, the coach and a rival player were jawing back-and-forth at one another. It led to the player throwing a ball at the coach, which missed him and hit a female official:

The coach then jumped at the player with both feet into the pool, inciting a massive underwater brawl.

Check out two photos of the leap here:

The Russian water polo game then had to be stopped immediately when an underwater brawl between the two teams broke out. Check out the chaos:

As you can see, the leap certainly mirrors that of Khabib’s famous brawl-starting jump.

‘The Eagle’ remains suspended for starting the brawl but is expected to return to fighting this fall. He’s tentatively slated for a title unification fight with interim champion Dustin Poirier in September. The fight has not been made official as of yet.

As for the water polo coach, his punishment remains unknown.

Joe Rogan: Floyd Mayweather Could Have ‘Terrible Night’ In RIZIN Debut

UFC commentator Joe Rogan believes Floyd Mayweather could be in for a rough night upon his Rizin debut.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has done it yet again.

“Money” stole headlines last night with the announcement that he’d be fighting for the Japanese mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion RIZIN FF. Mayweather will fight Tenshin Nasukawa at Rizin 14 on December 31st from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The ruleset for the contest has yet to be determined; however, many assume it will not be under MMA rules.

Should Mayweather allow Nasukawa to even kick, it could be a rough night for the 50-0 undefeated boxer. At least, that’s the thinking of longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan. Rogan recently took to Instagram to react to the news of Mayweather’s new venture with Rizin. Rogan said he’s happy people will look up Nasukawa’s name and watch some of his past fights.

He also said that, depending on the fight’s ruleset, Mayweather could be in for a rough night in Japan:

“I’m sure many of you combat sports fans have heard that Floyd Mayweather has signed to face Tenshin Nasukawa in Japan on New Years Eve. I don’t know what kind of ‘special rules’ they’re supposed to be fighting under but I just like the fact that it’s going to happen and that people get to google Tenshin’s name and see some of his fights.

“He’s a true striking genius. I doubt Floyd is going to agree to any rules that allow Tenshin to kick, but if he does it could be a terrible night for him. This kid is the truth.”

WATCH: Anthony Joshua Destroys Alexander Povetkin To Remain Undefeated

Check out the amazing knockout Anthony Joshua scored to stay undefeated.

Anthony Joshua is still the undisputed heavyweight king of the boxing world.

The Englishman was able to retain his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO (Super), and IBO heavyweight titles against Alexander Povetkin. Joshua knocked out Povetkin in the 7th round of their bout from the Wembley Stadium in London, England.

The victory marked the 22nd consecutive win of Joshua’s career. He has won all but one of those fights via knockout. Check out Joshua’s finish of Povetkin here:

Joshua is the “money fight” in the heavyweight division of boxing. Fellow top-ranked heavyweight stars such as Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury have been trying to land a fight with the Englishman for quite some time. Unfortunately, a deal has never been able to come to fruition.

Wilder and Fury will instead fight one another in December. The winner is expected to be Joshua’s next opponent, likely in April from Wembley Stadium. There’s an April 13th date available from the venue that Joshua would like to make his return at for a big fight.

Whether it’s against Wilder or Fury, Joshua and Wembley Stadium will certainly do big business with each other when the time comes.
