Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley thinks fighters like Sage Northcutt and Paige VanZant paid the price for being rushed to the spotlight.

Woodley made a name for himself as the UFC welterweight champion, defeating Robbie Lawler for the belt before earning successful title defenses against the likes of Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson.

While Woodley’s best MMA days may be behind him, he remains one of the most vocal personalities in the sport. He isn’t afraid to speak his mind especially when it comes to issues involving the UFC.

During a recent appearance on The Residency Podcast, Woodley gave his thoughts on how the UFC promotes young talent.

“They (UFC) force feed. What happened when you forced Sage Northcutt on us? … No shade, that’s my homie, but they pressed him too quick. He wasn’t ready. I was his training partner, I’m telling you, he wasn’t ready,” Woodley admitted. “He would’ve been great, he could’ve been a champion. He gave me many, many ass-whoopings in the gym. But then he couldn’t take when somebody went to submit him. He couldn’t take pressure. If he couldn’t get right up, it would frustrate him. That was the thing that me and my coach wanted to work with him on. Because he was so young.

“So, Sage, Paige VanZant, all these people they wanted us to be like, ‘This is the person,’ but they gotta still win. What happens when you fuck around and you blow somebody up to ‘this is the person’ and they lose, to Charlie Oliveira. You may want Gaethje there because he doesn’t give a fuck and just says crazy shit, but he may not be able to fuck with Charlie Oliveira. The sport is the sport.”

One exception to Woodley’s points is Khamzat Chimaev. The welterweight star has catapulted to the title hunt after just a few wins, including most recently against former title challenger Gilbert Burns.

VanZant recently made her professional wrestling debut in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and is also signed to Bare Knuckle FC. VanZant went 5-4 during her UFC run.

Northcutt most recently competed against Cosmo Alexandre in ONE Championship back in May 2019. During his UFC career, he went 6-2, with both losses coming by submission.

Woodley feels that the career trajectories of fighters like VanZant and Northcutt would’ve gone a different direction had they taken the Sean O’Malley route with a slow, methodical path to a title.

Do you agree with Tyron Woodley’s comments about Sage Northcutt and Paige VanZant?

Renowned MMA journalist and avid pro wrestling fan Ariel Helwani has some direct advice for new All Elite Wrestling (AEW) signee Paige VanZant.

Paige VanZant is known to wear many hats under the spotlight. She has turned in art as an author, dancer, UFC athlete, and even a bare-knuckle boxer.

The latest chapter for “12 Gauge” has been taking a page out of Ronda Rousey’s book and stepping into the world of professional wrestling.

While Ronda Rousey reigns as the current WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion, VanZant’s rasslin’ career just got rolling at last weekend’s AEW Double or Nothing pay-per-view. VanZant took part in a six person’s tag team match, and her performance was met with mixed reviews.

One person who wasn’t too impressed was Ariel Helwani. Helwani was not harsh of VanZant, and overall, his words appeared to be purely constructive criticism. Simply put, the MMA journalist feels that in order for VanZant to perform better at future showcases like Double or Nothing, she must first be All-In.

“I saw highlights of Paige VanZant’s pro wrestling debut this weekend, and well, I wasn’t too impressed,” Helwani wrote on the “Two-Cent Tuesday” post on his Substack. “She is super green, though. She’ll need to devote all her time to the craft if she wants to be successful.”

Prior to her AEW debut, VanZant made it clear that she will continue to spread her time between BKFC and AEW, not to mention remaining open to returning to MMA competition. She also lends much of her attention to her active social media presence and personal fan site.

That being said, VanZant has lost both of her BKFC fights, and company president David Feldman has implied that her next fight will be a must-win. Theefore, should VanZant lose her next bout, which is scheduled for next month’s BKFC London event, she may very well find herself with more free time to unwittingly follow Ariel Helwani’s unsolicited advice.

How do you think Paige VanZant will fare as a professional wrestler?

Paige VanZant has given her reaction to making her professional wrestling debut over the weekend.

VanZant made her debut for All Elite Wrestling (AEW) this past weekend on pay-per-view (PPV) at their Double or Nothing event. VanZant teamed up with Men of the Year to defeat Sammy Guevara, Frankie Kazarian, and Tay Conti.

Shortly after the show, VanZant spoke to The Schmo to get her reaction to her first ever match. VanZant believes she put on an impressive performance, showcasing she was meant to be a professional wrestler as well.

“I’m feeling great,” VanZant said. “I went out there, we got the win, I feel like I put on an impressive performance and showed everybody I’m meant to be a pro wrestler too.”

When asked to give herself a grade, VanZant admitted there’s always room for improvement, but she believes her performance showcased how quickly she can pick things up inside the ring.

“I never give myself a perfect grade,” VanZant said. “There’s always room for improvement. I’m only going to get better, I just started training pro wrestling. But you guys can see how quickly I picked up pro wrestling moves and I showed all the girls in the division, they got somebody to look out for.”

Paige VanZant has done many things since leaving the UFC. In addition to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition, VanZant has done Dancing With The Stars, bare-knuckle boxing, professional wrestling, and so much more.

The new member of the AEW roster says she has no intentions of picking any particular lane to stick to, as she enjoys being good at everything she does.

“It feels amazing,” VanZant said. “Everybody keeps asking me when I’m going to ‘pick a lane.’ I don’t have to, I’m going to be good at absolutely everything I do. And I got my new bare-knuckle boxing match coming up in London on July 16.”

When asked when we can see her back inside the squared circle, VanZant said she’s ready to go as soon as possible, as she didn’t suffer any major injuries in her match.

“I hope soon. I came out of this match unscathed, I have zero injuries, I put on a dominant performance, I can’t wait for my solo match.”

VanZant is getting ready to make her professional wrestling debut for All Elite Wrestling later this year. She’s also under contract with Bare Knuckle FC and is expected to return at a later date.

While VanZant has struggled with three straight losses during her time in MMA and bare-knuckle boxing, she remains a popular presence on social media.

In a recent Instagram post, she shared footage of a new tattoo with the words “heart of a warrior, soul of a lion”.

“Heart of a Warrior, Soul of a Lion,” VanZant posted. “No one can ever deny how much heart I have in my fights. At times I’ll drop everything I have ever learned and fight with nothing but pride, which doesn’t always lead to the best outcome. This is a reminder to myself, I already have the heart and soul all I need to do is take care of the rest.”

But VanZant’s tattoo didn’t get rave reviews from her 3.2 million following on Instagram. One fan pointed out an error in the phrase and that she allegedly screwed up the wording of it.

“Isn’t it heart of Lion and soul of warrior?” one fan commented.

Another follower of VanZant wrote a harsher review of her new ink.

“That’s the dumbest tattoo ever!” one follower commented. “He should be ashamed for putting that on you.”

VanZant has yet to reply to any of the hostile comments on the Instagram post.

While it’s debatable whether or not VanZant’s tattoo is appealing, it has caused strong reactions from some of her followers.
