Bellator Welterweight veteran Paul Daley has announced his next fight will be his last, and it will take place at 175 pounds.
Daley made the surprise announcement on Thursday on his Instagram, writing “forever a samurai. But soon we will put the blade to rest.”
“After discussions and careful consideration with my family, it has been decided that my next fight [in Bellator] will be my last,” Daley wrote. “To be fought at a catch weight of 175lbs. Opponent and location to be confirmed. Health before Wealth, and NEVER COMPROMISE YOURSELF.”
Daley was ruled out of the Bellator 247 main event fight Derek Anderson on Wednesday after he suffered complications from weight-cutting and was taken to an area hospital in Milan, Italy, which hosted Thursday’s CBS Sports Network-broadcast Bellator Card.
Daley missed weight by 1.6 pounds for the bout, Daley noted that due to the heavy safety precautions, his issues were made public and he requested an ambulance. Despite a trip to the hospital, Daley stated that he still could have fought because he hadn’t received IV rehydration, which would have ruled him out of the fight.
An inspector from the athletic commission overseeing the event was the one to ultimately pull Daley from the fight, per Michael Mazzulli of the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation, which oversaw the event.
“What [Daley is] doing right now is not good for his body, plain and simple, and he needs to understand that he shouldn’t be doing this,” Mazzulli told MMA Fighting. “He’s going to have to go up in weight. It amazes me that he thinks it’s OK what he’s doing with his body at his age.”
Reached for comment on Thursday, Coker wrote via text, “We’ll talk to Paul in a couple days”
One of the sport’s greatest knockout artists, Daley is 42-17-2 and has an astonishing 31 knockouts on his resume. He said prior to Bellator 247 that he has three bouts remaining on his contract and could leave the promotion after a long tenure Bellator.

Daley — a winner of his last two outings — was originally set to headline the event taking place Thursday in a welterweight matchup with Derek Anderson in Milan, Italy.
However, both fighters didn’t show up to the scales on Wednesday. It was later confirmed by Bellator that “Semtex” missed weight by 2.6 pounds and was then transported to a local hospital.
“Paul Daley weighed in at 172.6 during the official window,” Bellator statement’s read. “He was unable to make it to the stage during the ceremonial weigh-ins shortly after and was subsequently transported. Fight is off and we will have a a new main event shortly.”
Daley would later reveal that he suffered some cramps as a result of his weight cut. However, he was hoping the fight would still go ahead as he recovered at the hospital and didn’t receive an IV either.
That wasn’t the case, however.
“No IV, fit to go, wanted to fight,” Daley said (via MMA Fighting). “And then I’ve just heard that there’s no chance. Like I said, [what happened with the last part of the weight cut] is not unusual for professional fighters, it just normally takes place in our rooms with our team.
“It’s just unfortunate that it took place downstairs and that Bellator, CBS, and Sky Sports—even though I’m fit, I’m healthy, I’m 100 percent, no hospital treatment, ready to go right now—they don’t want to put the fight on. So I apologize.”
The new Bellator 247 main event will see a women’s flyweight bout between Kate Jackson and Bellator kickboxing champion Denise Kielholtz.

Welterweight veteran Paul Daly declared himself the best British fighter
ever ahead of his now postponed Bellator 241 fight against Sabah Homasi.
Speaking to MMA Fighting ahead of the event Daley took time to reflect on the longevity he’s enjoyed in MMA – something he clearly takes pride in.
“That’s
something my coach said to me this very week — in the time that you’ve been
fighting, two generations of careers have come and gone. Two generations of
fighters have started and finished in the time that you’ve been fighting. I’m
still fighting with the third generation of guys.
“These
guys probably watched me when I was coming up in Cage Rage or Strikeforce or
the UFC. These guys were like 12 years old watching me. It’s crazy.”
The
37-year-old knockout artist believes his longevity at the top of the sport separates
him from all other fighters from his nation and makes him the best fighter in
British MMA history.
“Out
of all the U.K. fighters, past or present, whether they’ve held titles or not,
I’m the best. I’m the best British fighter there has ever been.
“I
know Michael Bisping was a champion in the UFC and I know he beat an aging
Anderson Silva and he knocked out Luke Rockhold and just about every other
middleweight he’s knocked out but in terms of longevity, consistency and
staying up there with the very best, I’m still there. I’m still at the top.
I’ve just got to keep knocking people out.”
Once
known as a brash talking, fiery tempered fighter Daley has calmed over time. He
is now happy simply competing and picking up wins whilst continuing to improve
his legacy in the sport.
“I just want to
keep fighting and to stay healthy,” Daley said. “I think the opportunities that
I believe I deserve will be presented to me. I’m past a stage where I want to
call names out. The only one I probably would mention is Douglas Lima and
he’s off at middleweight fighting [Gegard] Mousasi so there are no fights that
I have that hunger to call out.
“I’m just happy to
keep knocking people out until people see what my fans and the people closest
to me see.”
