Anthony Smith had some words for former boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi after his recent comments.

Malignaggi suffered a unanimous decision loss to Artem Lobov with a 48-47 score on all three judges’ scorecards at the Bare-Knuckle FC (BKFC) 6 event. The show went down on June 22, 2019, in Tampa, Florida and aired on pay-per-view (PPV).

In a recent video, Malignaggi responded to the criticism from Chael Sonnen and Ben Askren about the fight.

Malignaggi told Counter Punch Boxing (via MMA News), “Ben Askren, the same shit. I did it with one hand. I did it with half a hand. And I did it bare knuckle. Go and do it. Go put on gloves if it’s not that hard.”

Smith saw these comments and took to his official Twitter account where he pointed out some logic to “The Magic Man”:

“What were you saying about your hand? Mindset means everything. You aren’t fighting one-handed, Paulie. You’re fighting with two hands, one is just broken.”

Smith knows what it’s like to deal with broken hands. In his latest fight, he broke his own. Smith beat three-time UFC light heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson in the main event of UFC Stockholm.

Before that fight, Smith was looking to get back on the winning path as he was coming off a unanimous decision loss to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in the main event of UFC 235.

Paulie Malignaggi Hits Back At Chael Sonnen, Ben Askren For Boxing Criticism

Paulie Malignaggi responded to Chael Sonnen and Ben Askren’s criticism of him by challenging them to take up the sport of boxing.

Malignaggi was outpointed by Artem Lobov when the two met in bare knuckle action earlier this month. For his part, Malignaggi claimed to have broken his hand but believed he was still deserving of the decision. Others felt he was underwhelming and should have put Lobov away considering he was a former boxing champion.

Two prominent figures to have commented on his performance were Sonnen and Askren, with the latter even questioning how good boxers really were if Malignaggi was capable of losing to Lobov. This drew a response from the New Yorker:

“Literally, if you listen to any of their analysis, you got Chael Sonnen talking about how boxing is not a sport, this guy just walked in and beat me,” Malignaggi said recently (via MMA News). “Chael, cuz, you not that old, bro. Go and do it. Go and do it, bro. Go and do it. Go fight any light heavyweight in the world.

“Ben Askren, the same sh*t. I did it with one hand. I did it with half a hand. And I did it bare knuckle. Go and do it. Go put on gloves if it’s not that hard. Because you know we make more than you guys. You know we get paid more than you. You know that already. So come in. Come and do it, cuz! It’s that easy? Go make your money!”

Do you think Sonnen and Askren’s criticism was warranted? Or are they being too harsh on Malignaggi and the sport of boxing?

Everyone is talking about Artem Lobov’s Bare-Knuckle FC (BKFC) 6 victory over Paulie Malignaggi.

Even UFC welterweight Ben Askren has commented on the bout. Speaking on Periscope this week, Askren downplayed Lobov’s accomplishments as a mixed martial artist. He also acknowledged that Malignaggi is a former World Champion boxer, which would usually make the victory more impressive.

However, Askren believes that simply proves “people who box must just not be that good at boxing” (via BJPenn.com):

“I get that Paulie retired, but he was a world champion. Now Artem, I went back to his record to make sure he was as bad as I remember him being. The fact is he’s as bad as I remember him being. He stinks. And this wasn’t like he did MMA and had great standup but struggled on the ground, or always got taken down.

Or had great hands but couldn’t deal with the kicks. It wasn’t anything like that. It was like he was a very average mixed martial artist. Average, that might even be getting a little too much. So how can a guy like that, who’s not even great at standup in mixed martial arts, go to beat a guy who was a world champion in boxing?

And the answer to me seems that people who box must just not be that good at boxing.”

Askren will return to the Octagon at UFC 239 on pay-per-view (PPV). He’ll be taking on Jorge Masvidal in what is likely a No. 1-contender match. Current welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is targeting a late 2019 return to action.

Usman and Askren have some personal issues with each other, so expect “The Nigerian Nightmare” to be rooting for “Funky” come July 6.

Paulie Malignaggi was handed an indefinite sit on the Bare-Knuckle FC (BKFC) 6 medical suspensions, and it’s no surprise why.

Malignaggi recently took to Instagram to issue a statement on his loss to Artem Lobov in Florida this past weekend. He also shares some photos of his ridiculously swollen hands after the scrap. Here’s what he had to say:

“Life is sometimes about being adventurous and trying new things. Many thought I was crazy for trying my hand at bare knuckle combat and while unfortunately I may not have been born with very durable hands, it is still an experience I get to look back on and say I lived it. People have always had very little expectations of me in my life but I can proudly say I’ve always fought my way to a better life.

In life we all have obstacles and I’ve always been driven most when faced with adversity. In the end, despite my brittle hands (4 surgeries on my right hand) I have been able to accomplish more as mainly a 1 handed fighter than most fighters accomplish with 2 hands. And I did it with no shortcuts and having fought some amazing fighters, travelled to some amazing places and met some amazing people along the way. You always wonder if as you get older you still have the ability to dig down when things get tough.

After 2 rounds Saturday night I sat in my corner now knowing I would be a 1 handed fighter for the remainder of this fight and I am proud I continued on and showed myself I still had a willingness to dig deep when faced with adversity as I found myself once again in a familiar predicament of having a damaged hand with a determined opponent across the ring coming to rip my head off yet now I was competing in a new form of combat.

I assure you its not an enviable position but I’m glad I stayed true to myself as a man and as a fighter in the moment and continued to fight despite having to obviously adjust my strategy. Respect to @rushammerwho always shows up to fight and give his best no mater what day or place or at what weight and respect to him for the fight on Saturday.

Obviously I feel like I won the fight but that is in no way meant as a disrespect to him. I hope he can take the momentum he gained from this result and make plenty of money for himself and his family in his career . Here are some pics of my hands after Saturday nights fight.”

Following his unanimous decision loss to Lobov, Malignaggi slammed the “bush league” judging for the bare-knuckle contest. He also noted that he’s likely done fighting, although he admitted, had he won, he probably would’ve continued.
