Former UFC middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker is confident of victory over Paulo Costa.

The UFC recently announced that Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa would square of as part of UFC 284 in Perth, Australia. The bout, which has seemed inevitable for some time, has the potential to be a thriller and it is safe to assume that it least one of these men will be forced to suffer through some adversity.

Whittaker seems unfazed though, aware but unafraid of the sort of challenge Costa can present. Talking to Submission Radio Whittaker delved into his next matchup.

“I think he’s a tough guy, and I’m taking this fight with all the respect that I do every other fight,” Whittaker said. “I’m gonna go in there in February the best version of myself, and I think the best version of myself is better than everybody else in the division. I think skill-wise I’m better than Paulo across the board. He probably benches more than me. But my bench isn’t crazy anyway (laughs).”

“He’s very well-rounded. He’s a very, very well-rounded fighter, and obviously, he’s an athlete, a specimen. He’s got a lot of power, torque and explosiveness. But, I’d like to think I’m all of those things as well, and better.”

“I just think I’m better. Flat better. And I’m going to train my everything that I have over the next 17 weeks to put him away.”

Whittaker will want to make it two in a row following his dominant win over former title challenger Marvin Vettori.

Whittaker is undoubtedly the second-best middleweight in the world, closely behind Israel Adesanya, but the pair have already faced off twice with Adesanya winning both.

Though, should Whittaker keep winning he will force the issue and make have another shot at the reigning champion.

Paulo Costa doesn’t believe Jake Paul would stand a chance against him in a boxing match.

The two have had somewhat of a feud since Costa’s last fight against Luke Rockhold. Paul had said it was one of the worst fights he has seen and joked about how much he disliked the fight. Paul claimed both of those fighters should be embarrassed and that they would be “easy money” in a boxing match.

This got under Costa’s skin, as he sent a few shots back at Paul and even offered to box him if he sent the contract. Paul has an upcoming boxing match with Anderson Silva this Saturday, and to this point in his short career he is undefeated. He truly puts the work in and trains hard for his matches, even if he is boxing guys that are out of their prime.

Paulo Costa questioned whether Jake Paul would leave the ring alive if he were to box him

“Look at that beast. Imagine I chase Jake Paul in the ring like that. Bouncing the head and the chin like Mike Tyson and bam, bam, bam. He’s dead bro, he cannot survive.” Costa added in the caption: “Can you imagine if I chased Jake in that ring? He wouldn’t get out breathing.” (Transcribed by Mirror)

Costa will be facing off against Robert Whittaker at UFC 284, which will most likely determine who is next in line for a title shot. This also would depend on how the fight between Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira goes as well. If Adesanya wins, the UFC may feel inclined to book an immediate rematch between the two since Adesanya has defended the belt dominantly for a few years. Both Whittaker and Costa have lost to Adesanya in title fights, but they are two of the divisions better strikers.
