Former Strikeforce and UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold seemed to call it a career following his bizarrely entertaining bout with Paulo Costa and UFC 278 in August. However, there is a scenario where we could see Rockhold grace the Octagon once more according to the man himself.
While speaking with Kacper Rosolowski and Denis Shkuratov of Submission Radio, the one-time UFC world champion suggested that a big change in the middleweight division could inspire him to make another epic comeback.
“That Brazilian dude winning the title,” said Rockhold. “You’d have every wrestler in the f*cking game just chomping at the bit to get to that guy.”
That “Brazilian dude” Luke Rockhold is referring to is none other than Alex Pereira who will meet reigning middleweight champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 281 this November. Of course, even if Pereira scores the upset, Rockhold still has some reservations about returning to competition.
“Only thing is you gotta fight Robert Whittaker or some sh*t in between and it’s like, that’ll f*ckin’ hurt. Win or lose to Robert Whittaker, that sh*t’s gonna hurt. It’s gonna hurt. We’re gonna fight.”
Luke Rockhold Was Not Impressed With Khamzat Chimaev
Shifting gears, Luke Rockhold was asked about his thoughts on Khamzat Chimaev and his heavily rumored move to the middleweight division after weighing in 7.5 pounds over the welterweight limit for his previously scheduled main event against Nate Diaz at UFC 279.
“I’m just not impressed with Khamzat, how he carried himself and missing weight by that much tells us so much about a person, you know? It’s like the pressure is getting to you and know you got a guy on the ground you can’t completely control like Nate Diaz, that’s gonna pose a little bit of a threat. You can wrestle him, but there’s worrisome. There’s a lot on the line. There’s a lot of pressure and he kind of b*tched out from what I saw, straight up. Now he wants to jump up to middleweight.”
As for how he feels about Paulo Costa, Luke Rockhold was less than complimentary, saying point blank that he didn’t feel Costa was “that good” when the two squared off in August but does believe the former UFC title challenger will have an advantage on the feet in a potential showdown with the undefeated Chechnyan.
“Paulo’s not that good. Paulo’s not that good at wrestling, I was just tired. He’s got a good initial burst, but there wasn’t much there with good energy. Chimaev seems like he’s a decent-level guy in the game of wrestling and grappling so, yeah. I don’t know. If he can get a takedown and rides that b*tch, I got Chimaev. On the feet, I think he might be in some trouble.
“It’s a good fight, but I’d favor Paulo on the feet and I’d favor Chimaev on the ground.”

Liver King has responded to Paulo Costa’s callout with an invite.
Former UFC middleweight title challenger Costa took on former champion Luke Rockhold in his last outing at UFC 278. Costa snapped his two-fight skid when he defeated Rockhold by unanimous decision. Following the bout, Costa returned to training at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he has been staying for a while.
Fitness influencer Liver King likes to attend mixed martial arts events and frequents UFC shows. He was in attendance during the International Fight Week card of UFC 276 in July and recently returned for another three shows.
Paulo Costa called out Liver King
Costa took to his Instagram to challenge Liver King in a short video. He declared that he had better abs than King and wanted him to compete in something he didn’t specify.
“What’s up Liver King? What the f*ck, where you at? I’m here in my house, Las Vegas,” Costa said. “Look at these abs, better than yours. Where are you at? Are you hiding? I’m waiting for you for the competition. I will beat you Liver King.”
“Where are u at @liverking ? I’m angry against everyone no one is safely Mtfk,” he captioned the clip.
Liver King responded to Costa with an invite to the cave
King issued his response in the comments. Although his message was fiery, he extended an invitation to Costa to visit his cave for a feast.
“Liver King flew to your house last week,” King said. “Searched for you at 3 different fight events… but you were nowhere to be found … when you’re ready, I’ll be waiting in my cave… with Liver and a whole feast – LK (the undisputed champion) out!”
It’s unclear what their rivalry is about but it’s likely just for entertainment if not a dispute over who has the best take on getting fit, eating raw meat, or drinking the secret juice.

Paulo Costa has been rallying for a shot at Khamzat Chimaev and once again called him out after the latter hinted at a move up.
Chimaev is coming off a dominant finish over Kevin Holland at UFC 279. Initially, he was set to compete against fan favorite Nate Diaz in the headlining bout of the card in a welterweight contest. Chimaev came in seven and a half pounds over the agreed weight limit at 178.5 pounds, needing a shuffle of opponents to keep the event from collapsing.
Following his victory, there were questions about whether he could make the weight again and his future at 170 pounds looked uncertain. Although Chimaev expressed his desire to stay in the weight class he’s a top-five ranked contender in, he took to his Twitter earlier today to tease a potential move to middleweight, writing “185.”
Paulo Costa calls for a fight with Khamzat Chimaev after ‘Borz’ hinted at moving to middleweight
Renowned MMA journalist Ariel Helwani weighed in on Chimaev’s cryptic message, tweeting: “If Khamzat is really off to 185, it’s gotta be Khamzat v Costa next. Easiest booking ever.”
Costa responded to Helwani’s tweet, agreeing with his suggestion of pitting him against Chimaev using a bunch of emojis.
The cupcake one is a reference to the nickname Costa has coined for Chimaev, ‘gourmet Chen Chen,’ and the hat emoji notes Costa’s claims of taking Chimaev’s hat.
Following Chimaev’s weight miss at UFC 279, company president Dana White theorized that a move up to middleweight would be the best idea for ‘Borz.’
“Yeah, it’s a problem, it’s a problem that he missed weight,” White told reporters at the UFC 279 post-fight press conference. “We have to look at it and figure it out, but what makes sense is for him to fight at (185). So we’ll see.” (ht MMA Junkie)

Paulo Costa and Dillon Danis had a playful “altercation” after the two had a night out drinking wine together.
Costa and Danis had a night out together and it looked like the two had a good time! Danis had posted a photo of the two with wine glasses at a dinner table, indicating the two had been out together for some time.
Costa admitted that Danis was the better wine drinker in a tweet as he said Danis beat him at drinking. Costa knows a few things about drinking wine, as he had made the claim that he drank too much the night before his bout with Israel Adesanya for the middleweight championship at UFC 253.
Costa couldn’t go out without beating Danis in something, so he ended up taking Danis down while they were walking out of the restaurant. He tweeted out that he had gotten into an altercation with Conor McGregor’s coach, poking fun at Danis.
Paulo Costa is currently looking for a bout with Khamzat Chimaev
Costa has been calling out Chimaev since the two got into a real altercation a few weeks back. Costa had claimed that he took everything away from Chimaev, including his hype, earlier this week in an interview with Ariel Helwani. Costa is known to be somewhat of an internet troll, but it seems as if he does believe that he messed with Chimaev’s head, and forced him to miss weight due to all his trash talking.
Chimaev may be looking to make the permanent jump to the middleweight division, so a fight with Costa is a real possibility in the near future. The fight makes the most sense from all sides. A fight between the two would settle their beef that they currently have, while Chimaev has a top five opponent in the division to fight.
