Despite coming up short, Jose Aldo was pleased with how he performed against Petr Yan.

Aldo took on Yan for the vacant bantamweight title at UFC 251 last month as he looked to become just the fifth two-weight champion in promotional history.

Although he enjoyed promising start to the fight where he had his fair share of moments, Aldo eventually slowed down before succumbing to a fifth-round TKO at the hands of Yan who became the new undisputed king of the division.

And while he doesn’t rewatch his fights, the Brazilian was happy with how the contest played out in his reflection of it.

“Pretty much everything worked out,” Aldo told MMA Fighting. “Everything we thought would happen in the fight happened. It was a very tough fight. We were basically tied going into the fifth round, but the main factors in the fight were a kick that landed on him and his punch that got me in the first and affected me. I thought it would be a tough fight, but I would be able to control it.

“We fought smart for two rounds. When I came back to the fourth, I don’t know why I changed my strategy again. I should have kept it, controlling the distance, but it’s his merit for imposing his rhythm, coming forward and controlling until the fifth. We thought about fighting [the way I did in round one], but he connected a good punch, and I went down and stayed there for a while trying to recover and couldn’t fight until the end.

“But, like I said, I’m very happy. I was able to land kicks, I was able to land punches. I think I should have done more combinations with my hands. I think it was a good performance regardless. I think it’s more of his merits for being able to neutralize some areas we had in mind than me not doing something.”

Aldo Defends Referee For Stoppage

The end of the fight saw a turtled up Aldo take a number of punches from Yan for over a minute before referee Leon Roberts ultimately decided to stop the bout.

Roberts received plenty of criticism afterward for what seemed to be a late stoppage. However, Aldo could only praise him.

“The referee was great, man – excellent work by the referee,” Aldo said. “It’s hard to think about stopping a title fight. If he stopped it early, everyone would talk about it. I wasn’t out at any moment. I went down and was trying to recover. Everyone who gets in there, or those who have been knocked down before, knows how the body reacts. You get slower, that’s a fact. Fighters who say it should have been stopped earlier are just kidding themselves. You get slower, you try to move, but it’s completely different.

“To me, the referee did an excellent job. Getting punched once or twice more won’t make any difference in your life. You’re willing to do it. What if the referee doesn’t stop it there, I recover and land a good one that knocks him out? Every referee goes to our locker room before the fight to go over the rules, and I always tell them to not stop the fight, only if I have no reaction. As long as I’m fighting, let me in there. It’s part of the sport.”

Regardless of how his bantamweight career has gone so far — with a 0-2 record now — Aldo still plans on competing for the time being.

“I’m an athlete,” Aldo added. “I’m a fighter. This is what I’ve chosen for my life. As long as I have this hunger to train and learn, to get out of my comfort zone, brother, I want to fight. That’s the goal. I’ll get back to training, do what ‘Dede’ and I are planning, and ask Dana (White) for a fight.”

UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan was not happy to hear former 135lb king Cody Garbrandt wants to move down to flyweight to challenge Deiveson Figueiredo rather than face him for the bantamweight belt. Speaking to ESPN on Monday Garbrandt revealed he is currently in line for a shot at Yan but is leaning towards dropping 10lbs to compete at flyweight instead, he said.

“As far as I know [I’m the No. 1 contender], I don’t have a contract in hand,” Garbrandt said. “We’re trying to wait on that with Ali [Abdelaziz] and Dana and Sean [Shelby] and Mick [Maynard]. I’ve actually been vocal about going to 125 for quite some time now. We spoke about it in the past before the Assuncao fight and I feel like it’s great. I’m able to do it now, early still in my career. I just turned 29. I’m able to go to 125, challenge and win that title there, and then go back up to 135 pounds and compete with the best of them there.

“I feel like it’s a time in my life and my career where it’s very pivotal for me to make this transition into flyweight and bantamweight,” Garbrandt added. “I don’t think a lot of the flyweight guys could come up to bantamweight and compete at the elite level that I am, so I’m very blessed I’m able to do that. So yeah, hopefully I get this shot against Figueroa, Figueiredo – whatever his name is. Great guy. I think that he’s a tough, tough competitor, I just think that I’m way more skillful than him and excited for the challenge at task. Hopefully we’ll get it done and I can get in the octagon before this year’s up again.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Yan took to Twitter to react to the news “no chin” Garbrandt was opting out of a fight with thim, he wrote.

“That moment when No Chin was walking to take a piss but ended peeing himself. You only bark but don’t bite and now you running away to flyweight division. Shut up while I will fight contenders who have balls to challenge me.”

Sterling Yan

Aljamain Sterling made sure to tell Petr Yan how he felt about him.

Yan became the new undisputed bantamweight champion following his impressive fifth-round TKO win over Jose Aldo at UFC 251 earlier this month.

Many now believe the next person to get a title shot should be Sterling, who is on a five-fight winning streak. However, UFC president Dana White has repeatedly refused to name “Funkmaster” as the outright next contender which has been a huge cause of frustration for Sterling.

Sterling: Yan Hasn’t Beaten Anyone In The Top Five

To make matters worse, Yan has been mocking him because of that as Sterling decided to take his frustration out on the champion on Wednesday.

“Paper Yan is a paper champion. His resume is single ply, too thin to even wipe my ass with it ? Hasn’t beaten a single guy in the top five. So you know I’m coming on that ? no tissues.”

It didn’t take long for Yan to respond back.

“Keep begging ? #FunkNotNext or is he? I don’t know, I don’t care ?????

Sterling replied a couple of hours later stating there was nobody else left for him to fight while taking another dig at Yan.

? There is no one else to fight buddy. Maybe you can fight the TV commentator too and keep pretending you are “the best”. #PaperYan ?

Sterling’s only competition for a title shot at this point is Marlon Moraes, who notably knocked him out back in 2017. However, Moraes is coming off a questionable split decision win over Aldo and lost his most recent title shot last summer.

In the end, it’s all up to White and the matchmakers.
