UFC Tonight Chael SonnenPress Release – LOS ANGELES, CA – On this week’s UFC TONIGHT, we have analysis, breakdowns, and predictions of the epic UFC 158: ST-PIERRE VS DIAZ card. Plus, Chael Sonnen has a response to Jon Jones’ recent tweets and much more.
Quote of the Week: UFC TONIGHT’s Kenny Florian on Georges St-Pierre could lose to Nick Diaz: “A great wrestler like GSP will grind an opponent down, but I don’t think there’s anyone who can grind down Nick Diaz. There are two ways you lose to a Diaz brother: If you’re not disciplined, and if you try to brawl with them – that is, stand in front of them – if you do that, Nick Diaz will destroy you.”

UFC TONIGHT’s Chael Sonnen on St-Pierre’s advantages over Diaz: “A lot of people largely favor Nick Diaz should they stand on their feet and trade punches. I think Georges St-Pierre is a phenomenal kick boxer. He’s got a lot of set-ups. He’s actually got a longer reach of the two. He’s got a height disadvantage, but a reach advantage. I’m not sure if that’s going to be totally true if they stay on their feet. I think Georges is a little bit quicker.”

Florian on how St-Pierre can beat Diaz: “The way you beat Nick Diaz is to outwrestle him. Diaz was actually making a great play out there when he was talking about how he doesn’t want to take people down or lay top of them the way GSP does. He’s trying to bait Georges into brawling with him, into fighting his style. That’s something that Nick Diaz has done very well for several years now.”

Sonnen on St-Pierre reacting to the trash talking of Diaz: “It looks as though Georges is falling for it a little bit. Georges is getting very angry here. This is the first opponent Georges has ever called out. As a champion, he usually just sat back and took whatever came his way. Now he’s calling Diaz out. He’s upset. He will stipulate to the fact that he’s angry. He will admit that, he will tell people that. Is this going to be a problem?”

Florian picks St-Pierre over Diaz: “Nick Diaz is my favorite fighter, as far as excitement. He always delivers. But Georges St-Pierre has the perfect game to beat Nick.”

Sonnen picks St-Pierre over Diaz: “Put me down for the current champion. I think he leaves with the title. This is going to be a war. This is a fight that they both want. This isn’t about rankings, this isn’t about titles, this is about respect and it’s going down Saturday night.”

Florian on Carlos Condit vs. Johny Hendricks: “This is a very interesting clash of styles. Johny Hendricks, a very high-level wrestler, is knocking guys out with that left hand. You know the left hand is coming and he still knocks you out. He’s deceptively fast and he can always rely on that wrestling background. In case that striking doesn’t work against a high-level striker like Carlos Condit, he can always take him down and win exactly like Georges St-Pierre did.”

Sonnen picks Johny Hendricks over Carlos Condit: “I’m going to take Hendricks for the decision. He’s in an upward swing. Condit is coming off a heartbreaking loss to Georges St-Pierre.”

Florian picks Carlos Condit over Johny Hendricks: “I’m going to go with the upset. Condit is going to take this one by decision.”

Sonnen picks Ellenberger over Marquardt: “I think whatever you say about Marquardt, you could say about Jake. On paper they’re really similar. Jake’s got a little more power. Marquardt’s got a little more speed. Marquardt’s been away from the Octagon, he hasn’t left MMA – he’s a Strikeforce champion – but he has been away from the Octagon and I’m choosing Ellenberger.”

Sonnen, on if he was Junior dos Santos, why he’d rather fight Mark Hunt over Alistair Overeem: “Look back at Hunt’s record, over the last 24 months, the only two losses he has is against Jenny Craig and a treadmill. I like Hunt and right now he’s red hot, and I like anybody who steps up to a challenge. Let’s be fair: Nobody wants to fight Junior dos Santos. You take that fight when you have to fight him. Hunt raised his hand, he volunteered, he got on the phone with Dana White and he said, ‘put me in coach’ and I love it.”

Sonnen on what he thinks about Jon Jones’ recent tweets: “I think this: Jon, stop tweeting. Stop trying to be me. It makes you appear stupid and just gives me material to ridicule you with. If Jon Jones, a potted cactus and a slice of pizza from my oven were all on Jeopardy, Jon Jones would not make the final round. On a lighter note, Jon, you had another baby, in all seriousness, congratulations. By this time next year you’ll be the Octomom of the Octagon.”

UFC TONIGHT Insider Ariel Helwani on an upcoming heavyweight fight: “There’s a huge heavyweight fight taking place on June 8 in Brazil. It’s the main event of UFC ON FUEL TV 10. It’s Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria versus Fabricio Werdum and they are the coaches for TUF Brazil 2.”

Helwani on Chris Leben’s next fight: “He’ll be fighting at UFC 162 versus Andrew Craig on July 6 in Las Vegas.”

MFC 37 Treadwell vs Treadwell

Press Release – The Maximum Fighting Championship is thrilled to announce that for the first time in the history of any major mixed martial arts promotion, two brothers will fight each other in a professional bout.

Thomas Treadwell and Mike Treadwell, who are not only siblings but also live together, will battle in a heavyweight matchup on the undercard of MFC 37: True Grit taking place live at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday, May 10.

“Absolutely, undeniably, one of the craziest and most anticipated fights in MFC history,” said Mark Pavelich, Owner/President of the Maximum Fighting Championship.

“Who hasn’t wondered what it would be like to watch two brothers fight? I remember from my own childhood, the most violent fights I was ever involved in myself were against my brother. We’d practically tear the house down because I was the younger brother out to prove myself against the older brother.

“I have a distinct feeling Treadwell vs. Treadwell will have that ‘Prove who’s really the toughest’ mentality and be a spectacularly wild fight.”

Long-time fans of MMA, this will be the pro debut for both brothers who share a condo in Edmonton, Alberta.

“We’re taking brotherhood to the next level,” said Mike Treadwell, 30, who previously served in the Canadian Armed Forces and has a background in security.

“This is something we’re excited about, and I think people are going to be very excited to see,” added Thomas Treadwell, a 20-year-old speciality mechanic.

While there are several significant brother combinations in mixed martial arts including Rodrigo and Rogerio Noguiera, Frank and Ken Shamrock, and Nick and Nate Diaz, plus former MFC welterweight champ Pat Healy and his twin Ryan, a brother versus brother showdown hasn’t happened until now. Once again, the MFC is making history.

“It doesn’t matter the names of the competitors – brothers are fighting, that’s all it will take to get people excited,” noted Mike.

The level of interest from friends and colleagues has overshadowed the small wave of negative feedback the brothers have received from certain family members, though another brother, Russ, will corner Thomas.

“Dad was angry and thinks we’re idiots. Mom knows but we don’t talk about it with her. Everyone else seems supportive,” said Thomas.

“The moment I mentioned to just a handful of people that this fight was going to take place, their reaction was pure fascination and then instantly it turned to a state of unbridled enthusiasm to see it for themselves,” offered Pavelich.

Tickets for MFC 37: True Grit are on sale now and are available at www.ticketmaster.ca or by calling the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024.

BAMMA 12Press Release – (March 8th.13) The UK’s premier Mixed Martial Arts promotion, BAMMA, is proud to announce the finalised fight card for BAMMA 12 which takes place at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena on Saturday 9th March 2013.

Bola Omoyele was set to face Harry McLeman, following an earlier injury pull out by Wayne Murray. But in a further twist of fate, Omoyele suffered a soft tissue tear 36 hours ago to be replaced by Scott Ashkam, who had been left standing by Kevin Thompson. McLeman now faces Askham in a Catchweight bout matched at 87kgs (192lbs)

Harry McLeman (4-0-0) comes to BAMMA 12 fresh off a win over Sam Mensah via first round Rear Naked Choke. Three of his fight victories have come via the same method and one via Ground and Pound. McLeman fights out of MacMillan’s Martial Arts Academy in Plymouth and has a background in boxing from when he was in the army and also competes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. (Two of McLeman’s Professional fights have not been recorded at Sherdog by the Promotions on which he fought. For fight record information provided by the fighter and being substantiated by BAMMA, see Ends.)

Brett McDermott steps in to replace injured Richi Knox against Thomas Denham at Light Heavyweight. Manchester’s Brett ‘The Spartan’ McDermott presents an Amateur record of 4-1-0, with all wins via TKO in the second or first round. Having captured the Full Contact Contender Amateur Light Heavyweight title at Full Contact Contender 2, he went on to successfully defend it on FCC 3 and FCC 4.

#10 ranked UK Flyweight, Steven “Taz” McCombe replaces Dawid Farycki to fight James McAllister in a Catchweight bout at 63kg (139lbs). Steven McCombe flies in from Northern Ireland and brings with him a record of 16-18 with the majority of his wins scored in the first round by Submission or TKO. Just one of his victories have been achieved in the 3rd. Since debuting in 2004, McCombe has faced a host of impressive British talent

Injury sees Paul McBride withdraw from his fight against Darren Wardle at Middleweight; and Jon Jackson retiring from his scheduled bout with Amas Siraj Mounir. Amas Siraj Mounir and Darren Wardle are no longer fighting at BAMMA 12.

BAMMA 12 fighters have all registered to Safe MMA, with the exception of the card’s latest replacement whose clear test results have been submitted today. At 11:04 hours, the majority of the card had been medically cleared by Safe MMA doctors, with a couple of late applications to be processed.

BAMMA’s Managing Director, Ashley Bothwell, said:

“It’s been an incredibly tough week for our matchmaker, Jude Samuel. Before ink sets on the contract, injury changes the fight yet again. Unfortunately this kind of bad luck can be part of the game; and we wish the injured guys all the best with their recovery. Jude has done an incredible job of unearthing, new exciting replacements to complete the card against all the odds and I’d like to thank the fighters that have stepped up at short notice.

“I’d also like to thank all the fighters, managers, doctors and sponsors who supported our decision to work under Safe MMA; and we can proudly say that we’re on track to having a fully medically cleared fight card under the system. The introduction of Safe MMA has increased the challenges in the last couple of days, as we were unable to find anywhere that could process bloods within 2 days and that was also within reach of potential replacements. However, we felt it was our priority to honour the remarkable effort of the rest of the BAMMA 12 fighters, in registering to Safe MMA, and the extraordinary support the wider community has shown. We’d whole-heartedly like to thank Alexis Coward and Dr. Kreindler at 76 Harley Street for their hard labours to get through the large volume of fighters registering in the last couple of weeks in time for fight night.

“I’m also proud to be able to say that despite the challenges, BAMMA 12 presents a fantastic night of fights, which includes; world class bouts, some of the top names in the UK, must-watch up-and-comers and a highly anticipated battle for the BAMMA Lonsdale British Lightweight title. It is all of this that makes BAMMA 12 a night not to be missed.”
