Rafael Dos Anjos is excited for a possible matchup against former UFC Lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.
Dos Anjos is in the midst of another title run in the 155 pound division. He has a tough matchup this weekend against Rafael Fiziev at UFC Vegas 58. He is looking to extend his run towards a potential title shot and a win could potentially earn himself a fight against a top five opponent.
‘RDA’ is hoping that Oliveira is the champion when it comes time for him to fight for the belt potentially once again. At the moment, Oliveira is stripped of the belt since he missed weight in his bout against Justin Gaethje. ‘Do Bronx’ should get the next title shot against a challenger, but it isn’t quite clear who that challenger should be. Alexander Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev both have legitimate claim to fight for the title next, but Oliveira has been throwing out Conor McGregor’s name as well.
Rafael Dos Anjos is hoping that he meets Charles Oliveira for the lightweight belt
“He’s on his moment. Fighters, it’s all about the mentality. [Charles Oliveira has] got his mental [attitude] on point, and he’s very confident, but we all know he has been knocked out in his fights, and he quit a couple of times. But he’s on his moment right now. He’s very confident. He’s on a good win streak.” Dos Anjos said (h/t MMAFighting)
Dos Anjos thinks he has a good chance to take Oliveira out, due to his history of being finished inside the octagon. ‘RDA’ also believes that Oliveira would not be able to control him on the ground, the same way he controlled Tony Ferguson and Dustin Poirier from top control and bottom.
“If you see when he took [Dustin] Poirier down, [Poirier] just grabbed him and tried to eat the time. It looked like he was desperate while he was on bottom. I play well on the bottom. I’m a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, and I know how to control the wrist and how to be calm on the bottom. With [Justin] Gaethje, he gave the back right away, and once you get in the scrambles and these guys give their back right away, that’s how Charles is good.”

Tiger Muay Thai coach Rafael Fiziev will mark his return to competition against Rafael dos Anjos this Saturday at UFC on ESPN 39. The two were initially scheduled to face each other earlier in March but Fiziev was forced to pull out after contracting COVID. Renato “Moicano” Carneiro was found as the short-notice replacement for Dos Anjos, who dominated his way to victory.
Ahead of his clash with dos Anjos, Fiziev recounted an intriguing tale from the past.
Valentina Shevchenko refereed Fiziev’s first fight
In an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Rafael Fiziev shared that he was twelve years old when he fought for the first time in Muay Thai against an opponent who was about 18 or 19.
He went on to reveal that fellow Kyrgyzstani and the current UFC women’s flyweight champion and pound-for-pound queen Valentina Shevchenko was the referee for that bout. “Valentina refereed this fight,” Fiziev said. “Yeah, she was the referee in my first fight. She’s a good referee, she put her fingers in my mouth when she tried to separate us.”
When asked why he thought she put her fingers in his mouth, Fiziev said, “I don’t know why. Because we fight like dogs maybe. I remember her finger in my mouth and she put it like (a fishhook). She had gloves.”
Rafael Fiziev argued striking techniques with Conor McGregor
“Ataman” has developed a reputation for his lethal striking abilities and holds a prolific standing as a coach at one of the most reputable gyms in Thailand. A video of Fiziev’s incredibly sharp defense displaying him dodging high kicks like he’s in The Matrix did rounds online.
When Conor McGregor stumbled upon the clip, he was far from pleased and suggested a counter move to demolish the technique. Fiziev responded quickly stating that McGregor was in a “fantasy world” and that his recommendation wouldn’t hold up in reality. He further extended an invitation to “Notorious” to train together with him.
The Irish superstar reiterated his stance and accepted the invitation for the next time he’s in Thailand. Although their argument appeared to be heated with a healthy bit of disrespect it seems like the two are simply stating their opinions without actual malice towards one another.

Former undisputed UFC lightweight and featherweight champion, Conor McGregor and streaking 155lbs contender, Rafael Fiziev has come to verbal blows, at least, with the latter urging the Dubliner to come train with him at Tiger Muay Thai in Thailand, as the two argued striking defense and techniques.
Conor McGregor, a former two-division champion under the UFC banner, has been sidelined since July of last year, suffering a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss against Dustin Poirier after he fractured his left tibia at the end of the first round.
For Fiziev, the surging Kazakhstan striker will make his first headlining outing under the UFC’s banner this weekend against former undisputed lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos, tackling the Brazilian at UFC Vegas 58.
A hugely accomplished striker and coach at renowned Muay Thai facility, Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket, Fiziev, a renowned striker himself, received major plaudits for his striking defense during his kickboxing career, as well as his ‘Fight Island’ outing against Marc Diakiese, hinging at the hips to avoid a high kick attempt.
Conor McGregor and Rafael Fiziev share a series of tweets arguing techniques
Breaking down Fiziev’s patented technique, McGregor urged aggressors to utilize an axe kick rather than a roundhouse kick attempt.
“This is awesome,” Conor McGregor tweeted in response to Rafael Fiziev’s defensive manoeuvres. “Change the roundhouse to an axe kick. Roundhouse into the axe kick and this defense eats the full of the heal. I’m telling you. If their reaction to a high kick is this, implement the axe.”
In response to McGregor, Fiziev offered to train the 33-year-old at Tiger Muay Thai, and claimed the former was living in a “fantasy world”.
“Conor, I invite you to @tigermuaythai where we can show you how to kick and defend the kicks properly so you can stop living in fantasy world where you think it’s possible to land an axe kick in this situation,” Rafael Fiziev tweeted.
In a series of responses to the upcoming main event feature, Fiziev, McGregor accepted an offer to train alongside him in Thailand, however, insisted that he was not living in a fantasy world, and told Fiziev how he has yet to achieve anything “significant” in the sport of mixed martial arts so far.
“I’m not disrespecting,” Conor McGregor tweeted. “I’m telling you, I’ve faced this defense habit a lot in my time where I knew every high kick I threw was being pulled back from and hitting air. I then began changing to an axe kick and came down on top with great success. That or the running roundhouse.”
“”Fantasy world” is thinking that this major defensive habit you have developed is impenetrable,” Conor McGregor tweeted to Rafael Fiziev. “It is, very much so penetrable. Habits are opportunities to set traps. Good luck.”
“Thank you for the offer,” McGregor tweeted. “When I am in Thailand I will head here for sure! Don’t disrespect you are yet to do anything significant in this sport. Good luck in your upcoming fight.”
