(Randy is one of those strong, soft-spoken types, and unfortunately my camera didn’t do a great job of picking up his audio, especially near the beginning. I recommend listening to this with headphones, at a decent volume.)

UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture was in New York yesterday doing press for his supporting role in The Expendables, and I got a chance to point my Flip cam at him for about 10 minutes and ask stupid questions. Couture revealed the secret behind Sylvester Stallone’s cartoonish forearms, weighed in on which member of the The Expendables is the toughest S.O.B. in real life, and explained why this movie was important to his budding movie career.

Of course, we also discussed his upcoming UFC 118 fight against James Toney. The Natural gives his thoughts on Toney’s off-the-wall trash talk, whether or not the match is a "freak show," and how he’s been preparing for Toney’s boxing skills. Some transcribed highlights are after the jump…

The more interviews I see with James Toney, the more I’m beginning to think the guy really believes that six months of sprawl training is going to give him the tools to walk through Randy Couture and subsequently earn him a shot at Brock Lesnar, whom he feels he will knock out with a lazy jab while adjusting his shorts.

Juanito Ibarra is a helluva drug.

Ariel Helwani deserves a medal for getting through an entire interview with the International Boxing Association and North American Boxing Organization heavyweight champion without a single, "C’mon James. You don’t really believe that, do you?"

James Toney Says “”MMA Ain’t No Different Than Boxing”

For years now the debate as to how a ‘high level’ boxer would do competing in MMA has raged (even more than the old ‘how would Bruce Lee have done in the Octagon?’ discussion). For years now the debate as to how a ‘high level’ boxer would do competing in MMA has raged (even more than the old ‘how would Bruce Lee have done in the Octagon?’ discussion). Of course, some boxers / kickboxers have transitioned into the sport and done rather (hello Mr. Marcus Davis), but the key component here is that they trained in various disciplines, you know, to follow up on the ‘mixed’ part of MMA.

James Toney signing with the UFC was such big news, because even though he’s past his prime at 41, he’s still a heavyweight champion. Now, since the news blazed across the internet that Toney would indeed fight Randy Couture August 28th, there’s been a ton of speculation as to how and what the boxer is doing in preparation for his MMA debut. According to some reports, Toney’s been pretty slick on the mats, even tapping out “King Mo” Lawal. So, while keeping this in mind, consider the following comments Toney made at a recent presser to hype UFC 118 (thanks to MMA Junkie for the quote)

“Why should I be scared of an MMA fighter?” Toney asked. “What’s different? MMA ain’t no different than boxing. Boxing is much tougher because you’re in there constantly punching and pounding.  Right here, you’ve got Randy Couture who’s going to be scared and constantly try to hug me like a little girl, and I’m going to make him pay for that.”

Toney also stated that he will knock Randy out, wait for it…even from his back. We’ll let you decide if the ‘charismatic’ fighter is just taking utter sh-t.  To read more from James ‘I Got This’ Toney head here.

MMA Fighting caught up with boxing champion turned MMA rookie James Toney over the weekend to discuss his UFC 118 debut against Randy Couture.

As expected, “Lights Out” was his usual entertaining self, as he took shots at everyone from Couture to Dana White to the sport of MMA. Toney would not address rumors that he was not well-versed in the sport, but he did take the time to show off his Randy Couture action figure, which he had wearing a dress and holding a purse.

All that fun and more can be seen in the video interview below.

I can break down the UFC 116 heavyweight championship match between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin stylistically (in fact, I’ll do just that), but that’s not going to really determine who’s better. One man could be superior than the other in every category but one, but if the latter can use that one big weapon to better effect, that might be all he needs to win. Such is the case of heavyweight fighting, when one big punch could supercede everything that comes before it.
